Starcraft II gets $100 Collector's Edition

Premium package for Wings of Liberty includes art book, soundtrack, dog tag flash drive loaded with original Starcraft, Brood War.

It's been a dozen years since the original Starcraft landed on store shelves, and Blizzard Entertainment is finally putting the finishing touches on the real-time strategy game's first true sequel. Today, the publisher moved one step closer to launch, detailing plans for a regular and Collector's Edition of Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty when it debuts later this year.

The Starcraft II Collector's Edition is too big to be contained by a single photo frame.
The Starcraft II Collector's Edition is too big to be contained by a single photo frame.

The limited Collector's Edition of Starcraft II will sell for $99.99, but it includes a number of bonuses for the extra expenditure. The premium version of the game will include a 176-page art book and a 2GB USB flash drive replica of Terran hero Jim Raynor's dog tag that comes preloaded with the original Starcraft and its expansion, Brood War.

The Collector's Edition will also pack in a handful of other goodies, like a soundtrack CD for the game, a behind-the-scenes DVD, a Starcraft #0 prequel to the comic book series, and an array of exclusive content for Blizzard's revamped Battle.net service. And for those who also play Blizzard's World of Warcraft, the developer is giving Collector's Edition purchasers an in-game pet based on the Terran unit Thor.

Those who want a no-frills edition of Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty will be able to pick it up for the PC and Macintosh at a retail price of $59.99. Would-be players who show a little patience will also be able to download it from the online Blizzard Store "shortly after release." Blizzard hasn't confirmed a release date yet, although the company has said such an announcement will happen "in the coming weeks."

Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty is the first of three installments that will comprise the sequel, each focusing its single-player campaign on one of the game's different factions. Wings of Liberty will include the 29-mission Terran campaign, as well as a fully featured multiplayer mode with playable Terran, Protoss, and Zerg factions.

$139.99 for Collectors Edition here :(. ill stick with normal anyways :) its too expensive and the normal game is too expensive. $60 are too much for that game. $50 are ok. it simply does not deserve that much money

@nedrith, from the way you speak you'll probably pirate the game anyway. And yes, people do pay for games believe it or not - they pay for the hard time which was invested into making tha game, for the art book, the USB stick that contains the original game and for the rest of the goodies that comes along. You dont like it , you dont buy it - as simple as that. Now go and pirate the game like the good boy you are!

I have the WCIII collectors edition and ... No, it was not just a game with a guide... In fact, there was no guide at all, lol.. Totally disappointed in Blizzard's delay and attempt at this game though... Have the beta.. Will likely just buy the regular edition and save myself the $40 wasted bucks. Already have 2 copies of starcraft, and now they want to charge me for each faction's game?? I don't care how many missions there is! They did WCIII with a tonne of missions and for one price! I'm 28 ... A 12 year wait for this game, and yeah, I'm pretty disappointed. Blizzard = fail.

I so wanted to get the collectors edition then I realized something. I have 2 copies of it and they don't work on windows 7. 60 bucks for a game we been waitin on for 5 years? Do you go to a restaurant and pay a extra ten bucks in tip because you waited a extra 30 mins for your meal? Hell if we waited 12 years for the game to come out I can wait a extra year to nock 30 bucks off the price and get a online copy no cds to keep track of. Now granted it's a little outdated so they can run the game on most systems but if your charging that high a price don't you think we can afford the hardware for a well made game. DoW 2 had better graphics than this game. On another note the next 2 installements arent expansions. Y would u have a 20 something mission game for 1 race then a little 15 or so mission game for the other 2 races. It will be full priced so $180 for SC 2. That's why the need to polish it like crazy if they mess up there not gonan get there moneys worth on the next 2 in the series. Blah Activision suck my nuke.

Poeple are upset about $60 for this game? Come on, you paid like $30 for the first one and you still play it after 12 years. Was your money not well-spent?

When 1st Starcraft was released there were only a few high class competitors in the market. - lol? Blizzard were competing with reigning RTS developer back then which is Westwood. They gained popularity with the their two warcraft rts titles but still it wasn't that great if we would compare it to WW C&C's. Then Starcraft came and was the considered the best RTS game of that year, Westwood retaliated with C&C:Tiberian Sun but failed. Westwood is eaten by EA and gone now, Blizzard is still here and remains supreme in competitive RTS because their games are the basic definition of high quality and polish.

Things have change alot? Like how many new RTS games still played competitively today and have an E-sport scene like Warcraft III and Starcraft? none. These new RTS are just flashy graphics and dumbed down gameplay by removing core RTS fundamental's such as resourced gathering and base building. If they wanted to remove those they should replace them with newer mechanics with equal value and IMO they failed so far resulting to boring gameplay and the game will just last you for a few month's. Thank god blizzard is ain't following those, sticking to the tried and true formula add new mechanics here and there and polish it is the right thing to do. Starcraft 2 will be superb no doubt. :)

Freshmen, I mean beginners to Starcraft universe will probably enjoy the game though, but do not expect something spectacular... When 1st Starcraft was released there were only a few high class competitors in the market so it was an easy time to become legend let´s say. However, things have changed a lot in years, there are lots of classy strategies around and SC II does not manage to rise the quality bar at all. Unfortunately :( ...

@ nezardm, Thanks so much for sharing my feelings my friend :) As a great fan of 1st Starcraft, I mentioned on another post I am damn disappointed ! In my opinion, Blizzard is just trying to milk us out! In 5 years this is what they have reached so far ??! As a programmer, I can easily tell you everything is based on previous game, only some slight modifications must have been done. And graphics at MAX settings is just a damn joke... I haven´t seen anything different compared to those screenshots we have seen years ago. What took 5 years ??! Let me tell u, sweet money they earned from WOW kept them away from their projects, people gave them confidence so they took it so slowwwwwwwww... In brief, game looks as if they just spent a few months over the old one, a bit make-up over graphics & game play, modifications on a few units and tataaaaa... Welcome SC II :( Compared to graphics of recently released C&C4 or let´s go a few years back to COH release... This game sadly can not even compete at all in graphics... The only positive thing in my opinion is the way they kept faction´s music styles. They really put you in nostalgia on the 1st game but sadly that´s all... I don´t know you folks but I am damn bored and not excited at all after beta... Yeah I will play the game TBH but I will buy it a longgg time later when it becomes cheaper i.e. the price drops down to what it really deserves. Price of Collector Ed. is another disaster already...

@ vf21x Your joking, right? $20? It will be more like $29.99 - 39.99. If they are selling it for $60, which is $10 more than any other PC game, they aren't cutting you a break with 1990's expansion pack prices. Not seeing why this is $60. There is no licensing issues like with console games, so what gives with the +10 price over 99% of all the PC games made? Activision is in control of the boat now. Get ready.

@ nezardm This is the best post I have seen about SC 2. You will win no fans here though. I said this months ago, that it looks like a slightly updated version of a game I played already called StarCraft. RTS's have come so far and I agree that SC 2 just didn't make the jump. Everyone touts the five years in production as a bonus, but do you know how much technology changes in four years? This an RTS. Little pixels running around firing little guns. What about that takes five years? At least games like Supreme Commander 2 have raised the bar and changed the same old stale formula. Maybe that formula works for you but, not for me.

Wow, do you know for $225 you can get a laptop? This gets crazier and crazier. Some fan boy will feel $100 is a fine price for very little in return. This is just like the $15 Modern Warfare 2 DLC. If people buy it, then the demand is there and they will continue these shenanigans. Wait a few months and you will be able to get this at Best Buy for $50.

@ nedrith please explain to me how you consider any game from the Diablo sage as "Half-Done" you think these guys take 5+ years to make a game so that it can be called half-done? Cant wait for Starcraft, not a big enough fan tho to get this collectors edition. but if I was I would def get it.

LoLs, so for $100 I don't even get a complete game only 1/3rd of that. that means the full CE will be $300, LOLs. Sad part is most people are addicted to any game blizzard makes even their half-done game(aka diablo) that they will pay insane prices like these.

Played beta and honestly got bored of it already, if you where playing sc1 the last years online, clans etc. This is just nothing new then, graphics should have been much much better, we have been seeing this videos of gameplay for the last 5+ years and now when its here it just isnt impressive anymore, its barely a step forward from sc1, i wish they kept the whole sc races thing BUT map wise, unit variety, amount ,graphics etc. of supreme commander, now that would be a decent move forward and something really descent of a score around 9. Not this world of warcraft inbreed, clone etc.

In order: Art Book: Meh, I look at them once or twice. 2GB USB drive preloaded with SC and SC:BW: Is there anyone getting this who doesn't already have the first two games? Still, you could always format the USB drive so I guess I'll call it a positive. Soundtrack CD: Always a big bonus for me. Behind-the-scenes DVD: Will watch once if at all. bleh. Starcraft #0: They have a comic series? Unless it's Hellgate:London quality (Game was far worse than the comic that was included), this is an easy pass. Exclusive content for Bnet: Without knowing what it is, I'll say meh. In-Game pet for WOW: Even if I did play WoW, I imagine that I wouldn't care.

@ Ladiesman17 It's funny how little you actually know about PC gaming. First off you aren't constantly buying hardware or anything like that, I'm dropping around $700 for my new rig and it'll last me through the next few years with little to no problems at all. The only thing I may purchase is a better video card or double up on what I already have simply to push it a little further. Secondly once you get your main rig built, from there it's minor stuff over a long period of time. You aren't going out and dropping hundreds of dollars every year to keep your rig current so you can play the latest and greatest games. Thirdly $60 for a PC game is rather overpriced, especially when every other game out there (anything that isn't coming from Activision) is priced at $50 and below. Not to mention the killer deals that are on Steam all the time. Lastly how are PC gamers buying more games than console owners? Where is this info coming from? Last time I checked PC gaming numbers they weren't as big as console gaming numbers... And certain developers are dropping out of PC gaming or at least making it alot more annoying to game on the PC. Look at Ubisoft and their latest DRM that requries an internet connection at all times to play. Or Activision and how they removed alot of the content (dedicated servers, mods, ect) from Modern Warfare 2. You see this sort of stuff all the time. Perhaps if you paid abit more attention to things you might realize how wrong you are. Oh yes, and let us not forget that there are still 2 more Star Craft II games coming as well. So $60 x 3 = $180 just to play through all three factions..... Sorry but that doesn't seem like a good deal to me.
