Starfield Almost Had A Voiced Protagonist, But Here's Why Bethesda Decided Against It

"We have over 200,000 lines of spoken dialogue in Starfield with no voiced protagonists."

Starfield's protagonist is not voiced, but that wasn't always the case. In pre-production, Bethesda Game Studios wanted to have a voiced protagonist, and the company even hired an actor and landed on a voice. However, after some time, the developers found that the voice was "too specific." Then things changed in a way that design director Emil Pagliarulo believes had a big benefit on the game overall, he told Polygon.

"Do we have, like some RPGs do, four voices? Do we have one voice, but hire someone else who's more convenient? But [in Starfield] you can make every different type of person. We realized that the only way to really do it and let the player be the person they want to be was to have an unvoiced protagonist," Pagliarulo said.

Now Playing: Starfield Combat Explained

The identity of the actor who could have voiced the protagonist is unknown. Pagliarulo went on to say that there was a time in the video game business when "every protagonist was voiced" in the AAA space, but for Starfield, not having a voiced hero allowed the team to achieve even more.

"There's a big argument, if in Fallout 4 and other RPGs, players don't like reading a line of dialogue, a player response, and then they click it and get [a different spoken line]. But the problem is, then you read it, and then you click it, and you have to wait for them to say the same thing," Pagliarulo said.

"So that's not ideal either. So then we just arrived at, What if we just go text? and it was just really freeing. And, I mean, we have over 200,000 lines of spoken dialogue in Starfield with no voiced protagonists. And it was not having a voiced protagonist that allowed us to create such a big world."

Starfield is the first new game from Bethesda Game Studios since 2018's Fallout 76, a game that was not critically adored at launch but has since gathered steam and dedicated following. Starfield presumably would have been a multiplatform game prior to Microsoft's acquisition of parent company ZeniMax in 2020, but now it's exclusive on console to Xbox.

Starfield's rollout begins August 31 for people who bought the $100 Constellation Edition or the $35 upgrade. Everyone else, including all Game Pass members, can begin playing on September 5.

Starfield exclusive on console to Xbox means Microsoft is missing out on millions of sales, but Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer is confident the game will make money.

Fair enough. I'm okay with either but I prefer to just play a ready made character over creating myself in games. Not necessarily the physical look but the character personality. Geralt in the Witcher comes to mind. Or a middle ground like Commander Shepard where there are choices to be made but still Shepard is pretty much a defined character.

Of course Starfield seems to be a different type of game though so I wouldn't expect that here and it probably wouldn't work as well with how Bethesda creates their stories.

If they had a voiced protag they would have to give the "saucy" and "not so saucy" options.

What a load of ****, they didn't do the voice acting as all AAA studios are greedy corporations and when they saw Baldur's Gate 3 so perfect they had to come up with a reason for charging more for Starfield while missing out on features.

@adventurefree: bro, your protagonist in BG3 is mute as well. Not sure this is a valid comparison

Ideally you would be given the option, but at the same time it has intrinsic changes to game design that can be detrimental.

Personally, I hated having the Mass Effect thing in Fallout 4. Not that thought it was good to begin with. Play UnderRail instead.

I think SF is going to be a great game, as the review embargo is up more then a week before the game launches, unlike AC games that were just hours. Cannot wait. I hope that SF is just the beginning of more to come.

There is some articles out there with doom and gloom riding on this one single game, which is crazy. Like Forbes, SF will be the make or break game for MS... that is silly. I do not think this game or any game, will make or break a console generation. A consistent number of exclusives and strong hardware sales is most important for any platform. And there seems to be more great games coming for MS, cannot wait.

Perhaps AI could take care of this. If it's not generating the voiced lines from scratch, it could be modifying the base starting voice work from an actor to sound like whatever else the player wants it to sound like

@mogan: Agree, but it also depends greatly on just what the game is like.

IF the protagonist is a Skyrim, Fallout, create your hero.... etc etc..

If it is like Mass Effect, or Bioshock, or a RPG where a story ties in with them, then it is fine to give them a voice and character. Though the Dragon quest Hero seems to do just fine without a particular 'voice'.

I mean, I am sure any game could go with a silent protagonist, but I could not imagine a 'commander' without Jennifer Hale VA, it is one of the great moments in my gaming life.

@mogan: Agreed. It's good for games where you play a pre-defined character but if you are making your own and defining their background, motivations, and attitude yourself a voice protagonist will never be able to cover that. It was a huge criticism of FO4.

They should definitely give protagonists of the next Fallout and Elder Scrolls a voice actor or actress, it brings life into the character. I know some people prefer the mute protagonist, but I rather hear my character talk and give emotion rather than staying silent and do nothing.

Fallout 4's protagonist gave a interesting branching take of how your protagonist enter the world of Fallout and have purpose to wonder the land. A good emotional scene observing or hearing our character mourned the passing of his or her spouse.

@mareo147: It was doable for Fallout 4 because they only needed one male and one female, which kept things relatively simple. Not sure if it's a good idea for Elder Scrolls, where the player can be one of 10 different races. Where even if they consolidated all the human and elf voices, they'd still need to record all the player dialogue at least 10 times because Argonians and Khajiit and Orcs sound very distinct from the others

...unless they were to use AI to generate or modify the different voices, which would be controversial.

@Spartan_418: If it's doable for Baldur's Gate 3 which has way more races and is done by a much smaller developer, it's than especially doable for a AAA studio but the corporate bosses only look at profits and cut corners where ever they can. Let's hope at least that we won't have to many bugs as the studio is known as a bugfest.
