Starfield Brings Back The Bethesda RPG Silent Protagonist

Fallout 4 dabbled in having a voiced protagonist for Bethesda's first-person RPG house style, but that won't be the case for Starfield.

We finally got our first proper look at Starfield, Bethesda's ambitious open-world RPG set in the vast reaches of space. It does still carry a lot of the studio's RPG DNA, including first-person conversations with other characters. And now Bethesda has confirmed that, unlike its last single-player RPG, the protagonist in Starfield will once again be silent.

Bethesda confirmed that you'll be a silent protagonist on its official Twitter account. This is notable because Fallout 4, the last single-player RPG from Bethesda, broke new ground by having you play as a voiced character. Fallout 76 went back to the silent trend, though that was a large multiplayer RPG.

Now Playing: Starfield Gameplay Reveal | Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase 2022

Similar to other Bethesda RPGs like Elder Scrolls or Fallout, your protagonist in Starfield is a customizable character. The presentation at the Xbox & Bethesda Showcase even made a point to show how flexible the character creator is. And like in other Bethesda RPGs, you'll have loads of dialogue options informed by your characteristics and other choices. But you won't hear your created character speaking their dialogue aloud this time.

Fan reaction seems split. Some have expressed disappointment in the silent protagonist trope, saying it breaks immersion. Others say they prefer silence, as opposed to hearing a performance of a line you just read.

Starfield has you explore the galaxy in a ship that you can create and outfit to your liking. The trailer showed that ship breaking atmosphere to enter space and even doing combat with other ships. Bethesda Game Studios head Todd Howard noted during the presentation that there are more than 1,000 planets to explore.

Good. Silent protagonists work best in games where the player chooses their personalities and how to deal with encounters.

So hyped for this. Really enjoyed Fallout 4 and this looks much better plus I prefer space to the wasteland. What there doing here is very ambitious. There’s no other game that I know of that’s anywhere close to the scope of this and no NMS, Elite Dangerous or Star Citizen do not compare. There’s nothing on ps5 or Xbox for that matter that’s close to the scale of this game. Over 1000 visitable planets in a systems, narrative based RPG like this? Phenomenal.

Can’t wait to dock onto and high jack and steal my first starship or raid a space station orbiting some desolate moon. This is no 12 hour 3rd person action adventure, I’m gonna spend hundreds and hundreds of hours in this universe. Can’t wait!

It really weirds me out that the "most powerful character creation system they ever made" doesn't have a voice. You can choose the way your character walks but he doesn't speak. I guess he's doing sign language behind the first-person camera then...

Sounds good to me. I don’t like a voiced player character in an RPG of this sort. It takes away the voice that I personally give to my character and it gets even worse if the voice acting is flat. Now to fix the dialogue options and that terrible dialogue wheel from Fallout 4.

Can’t say I care much about Starfield, though. Just give me ES6 already.

Yay. Hopefully they also bring back the old dialogue system. Got kind of tired hearing my dialogue sounding completely different from my choice.
