Steam Awards 2017 Winners Announced And, Surprise, The Witcher 3 Is Still Winning Things

Here's who won.

Voting for the second annual Steam Awards recently concluded, and Valve has now revealed the winners. Although the categories are more unusual than what we're accustomed to seeing from end-of-year awards, that didn't stop the usual suspects from winning.

As you'll see, Steam Awards are not restricted to games released in 2017, and with good reason. Valve recently announced Steam's best-selling games for the year, and many of them, like Rainbow Six Siege, Grand Theft Auto V, and The Witcher III: Wild Hunt, are in some cases multiple years old.

In the Choices Matter category, which is meant to celebrate games that provide you with a range of freedom, The Witcher III came out on top, beating out the likes of Divinity: Original Sin II and Dishonored 2. PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds won the Mom's Spaghetti category, which consisted of intense, stressful games like Resident Evil 7: Biohazard and The Evil Within 2.

Garry's Mod, released in 2006, won an award

The Labor of Love award, for older titles with strong continued support, went to Warframe, beating out games such as Team Fortress 2 and Path of Exile. The Suspension of Disbelief category went to Rocket League, while Cuphead, Just Cause 3, and Stardew Valley won other awards. Cuphead was the only game to win more than one award this year, taking home both Best Soundtrack and Even Better Than I Expected. You can see the full list of winners below or on Steam.

Each category consisted of five games that Steam users could vote on. Those five were nominated by users previously, with categories each opening up for a single day during the just-concluded Steam winter sale.

  • Choices Matter -- The Witcher III: Wild Hunt
  • Mom's Spaghetti -- PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds
  • Labor Of Love -- Warframe

  • Cry Havoc And Let Slip The Dogs Of War -- Just Cause 3
  • Haunts My Dreams -- Counter-Strike: Global Offensive

"Steam Awards are not restricted to games released in 2017"

wtf?

Then The Godfather should win the Oscar's drama category every year.

The Witcher 3 deserves every ounce of recognition and award it can get. It still remains my favorite game to release in the past 5 years. CD Projekt Red PLZ remaster or remake the first 2 Witcher games for PS4 players who never got to play the originals. I bet you anything it would be well worthwhile as far as profits and proceeds go.

No wonder, witcher 3 is an awesome game. Also it restored my faith in open world games(even the side quests were great).

@PCsama: yeah, maybe, I did vote lots of times. but try to picture devs advertising their games saying "Steam's Whoooaaaaaaa, Dude! 2.0".

I'm sincerely eager to see the end of this generation and see which game become the best game of generation.

The witcher wild hunt or Zelda botW

Who knows maybe a new game that isn't released yet.

While it's amazing to see a AAA single player game win these awards all these years later, the reason unfortunately is, single player experiences like Witcher 3 are becoming more and more rare because of all the social multiplayer garbage nowadays. I can't go a week without seeing a news article about PUBG's player population on Steam, or how Bungie is continuing to screw the pooch with Destiny 2.

@milesprower06: that’s just not true. Five of the best games of the year are all single player. Persona 5, Mario, BotW, The Evil Within 2, And Cuphead.

It’s a myth that single player games are dying, or aren’t profitable. It just isn’t true.

@milesprower06: its fine, let CDPR and others who believe in single player experience continue to make them. All the multiplayer games are pretty much the same. People will grow bored of them and look for single player games.

@Myron117: I only really play MP Games that goes back to CS:GO and beyond - More recently Games like RB6 Siege and PUBG - I do play the odd single player too but I like the social aspect of MP getting in a sqaud with a group of pals and having a blast is good fun - Im not sure why everyone hates on it so much? and no the MP games are not the same! and if im not bored of them after over 20 years of playing them I don't see myself or others getting bored of them any time soon!
