Steam Deck Preorders: Updated Shipping Dates, Pricing, How Reservations Work

Still looking to preorder the Steam Deck? Here's what you need to know about reservations for Valve's new portable PC.

Valve is releasing a handheld gaming system later this year called Steam Deck, letting you take and play your Steam games on the go with onboard storage. Starting at $399 for the 64GB model and going up to $649 for the 512GB version, the new portable PC releases this December. Preorders for the Steam Deck opened on July 16 and got off to a very rocky start. The Steam site struggled with extremely slow loading times and numerous errors right as Steam Deck reservations went live, and the "expected order availability" date has now been pushed back to "After Q2 2022" for all three storage options--the wave of December and early 2022 orders has already been capped. If you're still trying to reserve the Steam Deck, though, here's what you need to know.

How to preorder the Valve Steam Deck

Rather than traditional preorders, Valve is rolling out Steam Deck orders with a reservation system that will cost you $5 upfront. You can reserve the model of your choice for $5, and when inventory becomes available starting in December, Valve says customers will be notified in the order in which reservations were made. At that point, you'll then be prompted to make the full purchase. You'll only be able to purchase the Steam Deck model you reserved, so choose wisely. Only one Steam Deck can be reserved and ordered per customer. You can reserve one through the link below.

Steam Deck preorder qualifications

In order to reserve the Valve Steam Deck, your Steam account must be in an eligible region: the US, Canada, European Union, or the United Kingdom. (More info about availability in other regions is coming soon, Steam says.)

Valve's new handheld, the Steam Deck, starts at $399.

Steam Deck pricing

Here are the Steam Deck options you can reserve, their current order availability, and what they include:

Steam Deck, 64GB eMMC | $399

Order availability: After Q2 2022

  • Carrying case

Steam Deck, 256GB NVMe SSD | $529

Order availability: After Q2 2022

  • Faster storage
  • Carrying case
  • Exclusive Steam Community Profile bundle

Steam Deck, 512GB NVMe SSD | $649

Order availability: After Q2 2022

  • Fastest storage
  • Premium anti-glare etched glass
  • Exclusive carrying case
  • Exclusive Steam Community profile bundle
  • Exclusive virtual keyboard theme

The Steam Deck features a 7-inch touchscreen, two thumbsticks, a D-pad, and a four-button layout. It somewhat resembles a Nintendo Switch, but its "controllers" are slightly thicker with more of a curved grip that presumably will be more comfortable using in handheld mode. Check out the full list of Steam Deck specs for more.

An official dock will be available too, allowing you to prop up the Steam Deck while connecting to a monitor or TV (you can also use a powered USB-C hub for this, Steam says). The dock will be sold separately, and there's no information on price for that.

Wait. Let others take if for a spin, wait for the reviews. I have purchased Steam hardware, before it was released, before there were reviews... and boy did I live to regret it.

Believe now, thank me later.

That's done for mate. Forget pre-order. Scalpers have already flooded pre-orders, got pre-orders and have already listed their pre-ordered devices for 5000 usd.

@sebb: Scalping makes it sound terrible. We prefer to call it 'arbitrage'. Which it literally is. We're performing a vital market function by ensuring the most efficient distribution.

@mattwoahyeah: and that would be fine if they were selling it at msrp. Otherwise I don't feel like paying more and don't need their service. I can click a few buttons myself to pre-order 1 (ONE) device for myself. I can also program a script and upload it to aws lambda to scalp around. I can also create a scalable aws ec2 instance to rob all gamers of their dreams. But I don't because I'm not an asshole.

What is it with people acting so shocked and dismayed with the fact that people scalp. Of course its going to happen. I dont think wanting money necessarily makes someone an asshole. People just see that everyone else is doing it and join in on the trend, same as crypto or any other financial venture the way I see it. Even i've been tempted to do it but It just isn't worth the risk that comes with using ebay IMO.

@sebb: LOL, what made-up nonsense... I stepped right in a couple hours after the sale started, clicked on the model, bought it, and it was fast and easy. ONE PER ACCT, and the acct had to have bought something on Steam PRIOR TO JUNE.

There are a few on eBay, but those are individual sales. This is the polar opposite of 3070/3080, Xbox Series, and PS5 (whose presales ALL crashed repeatedly from scalper bot accts. (The XSX, which I managed to get an order in for, is the LAST time I try to click more than once on any preorder, ~45min of.fury)

@Pyrosa: This is where I got "the made up nonsense" from: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EIc-nkJ9T_8

It talks about an opposite experience of what you had. Probably shortly after your lucky experience, that's when Steam crashed, most probably due to scalpers running multithreaded aws lambda functions making millions of requests to pre-order.

Much more resembles a Wii U game pad then the Switch. The only difference really is the placement of the d-pad and face buttons.
