Steam rolls out Psychonauts

PC version of Double Fine's lauded adventure game now available on Valve's digital download service.

Double Fine Production's Psychonauts was released in April 2005 to great acclaim. While critics appreciated its originality and humor, most gamers didn't--because most gamers didn't play the game. Psychonauts was one of the retail disappointments (Advent Rising was the other) that led Majesco to financially stumble and abandon its plans to delve into publishing AAA titles.

The game is getting a second shot at sales thanks to a new retail channel--Valve's Steam service. The PC version of Psychonauts is now available for digital download from Steam for $19.99.

Psychonauts may be the first Double Fine game on Steam, but it may not be the last. Tim Schafer, Psychonauts' designer, commissioned the game's art director, Scott Campbell, to create a special comic commemorating the new friendship between the two companies. In the four-panel cartoon, characters from Double Fine and Valve properties (including Raz from Psychonauts and Gordon Freeman from the Half-Life series) exchange presents to celebrate their new digital partnership.

Psychonauts is rated T for Teen. For more information, read GameSpot's review.

Well, atleast people who didn't buy the game while it was in stores can get it now without having to try and find it used.

People who hate on Steam are clueless, it delivers great content in a simple and easy manner. I wish more games were put out on Steam so I wouldn't have to deal with retail stores for PC games... now if only my 360 had a bigger hard drive and could do the same...

I loved this game. Anybody who is thinking of trying it out for the PC should definetly do it. You will have lots of fun, especially if you give it a chance for the story to get going. That's the one problem with the game. The story is kind of slow at first and you have to get about a 1/4 of the way through before it really picks up.

I played through Psychonautsand and though it has some unusual and funny settings, there's not much new here in terms of gameplay. It doesn't beat the decade long reigning champion; Super Mario 64.

Sweet. I always meant to buy the game, & feel guilty for not supporting a (kindof, vaguely, if not really) good Adventure-ish game.

Psychonauts was definitely an innovative, and very fun game to play. it's too bad we probably won't see anything like it again from them...

You are totally incorrect about the cost of shipping a disc. If it was any where near your estimate, Netflix would have been out of business long ago. You may think that buying online is "crap shoot" but people who consistently buy online know how to determine who is legit and who is trying to rip them off. It is apparent that not that many people want to talk about the digital download retailing business. Rather, people mostly want to engage in fanboyism concerning this game. If you think it is worth it to pay more for a game just because you like the developer go ahead. I don't agree. But your estimates are fantasy and no one in their right mind should rely on your fuzzy math. This is not a new game so that your premium pricing is nonsensical. You are correct. You are getting your game now. That is exactly the impulse that they are counting on. I can wait a few days and get if for $4.99 plus $2.73 shipping tops. However, I don't need too. I got it for xbox and paid full freight for son back when it launched. So don't talk to me about buying it and not giving Double Fine a cut.

Monstromo, that is absolutely ridiculous. $20 is far from a "premium" price. Heck, $39 doesn't even command a "premium" tag when games are shooting to $60-$70 a pop. Buying used software is a crap shoot--either it is perfect or it is scratched, skips, or , yipes, isn't even the right disc. And, hello. most people charge $5-$10 for shipping; bringing your total to $14 up to $22..and you still have a used game! Sorry, $5 more and I get my game NOW.

I think I can legitmately talk about the pricing of digital downloads. I don't think something is legitimately earned when it is over priced. That does not make me an idiot. I did not state that Double Fine made a terrible game. I am sure they worked very hard on it.

Yeah, 20 Bucks for an innovative and original game is way unfair. I refuse to help the industry!

It profits Majesco. A very mismanaged company. It might reduce the nut that Tim and Double Fine owe. It may also remove that "low sales" developer collar he's been wearing since the release of this game. However, I can't support it due to the fact that it is way overpriced. You can buy Psychonauts for 9 to 12 bucks on ebay. After this digital release the demand will drop on ebay and you will get it for $4.99. I can appreciate the desire to help out a good game maker but I don't agree with paying a premium that is not legitmately earned.

That's a funny comic. For the people who don't mind platforming or collecting stuff, this game's sense of humor makes it worth all the while. I loved it, but my cousin, a FPS fan, was not impressed. He did, however, enjoy all the wacky scenes I would show him.

Niceee, i hope psychonauts gets some sales from this, it's annoying when a movie-game gets in the top 10 sales and an actually good game sells terribly.
