Stop Trying To Make Destiny

In Episode 1 of Spot On, a new weekly news show, we talk about the dangers of chasing a trend.

GameSpot is proud to debut Spot On, a new weekly news show featuring managing editor Tamoor Hussain and senior producer Lucy James. We know that the internet is full of daily and weekly news shows that recap the goings on in the games industry, so we're opting to dive deeper on a single issue, theme, or topic to present our perspective and encourage conversation.

For the first episode Lucy and Tamoor are tackling the dangers of chasing trends, specifically forcing games to be Destiny-like in their design and attempting to be a games as a service. Although this is a timely discussion because of the launch of Redfall, many games over the last few years have also chased the same trend, for better and for worse.

GameSpot has a number of new shows on YouTube for you to check out. If you haven't already seen it, check out GameSpot's History of Legend of Zelda video here. If video essays are more your speed, make sure to watch Kurt Locker, which is looking at the place remasters and remakes have in the industry. You can check out No HUD, Experts React, How It Saved, and more on our YouTube channel.

I think the problem with gamepass in general is the day 1 model. They gave up the traditional sales model for subscription service, which resulted in lost revenue and more importantly PROFIT. They then are pressured to make up the profit with the GaaS model being implemented in a bunch of these games. I'm not going to say that GaaS is a bad thing or a good thing, but publishers that have no or very little experience with it should not be jumping right into it, at least not with their biggest games. Redfall and halo infinite aren't titles where you experiment with.

The focus is lost now with the subscription model, and hopefully they figure it out. Because eventhough gamepass is amazing and I want it to continue...you have to be realistic.

The one good thing from all this is that with these blunders, at least bethesda and 343 both gained valuable experience and will only grow from this. Even rare has a bunch of experience with GaaS and MMO with sea of thieves.

Agree to disagree, I played D1 from day 1 to D2 release and I loved the game before the taken king even before the first expansion too because I had a clan which made the entire experience amazing and fun. D2 however DIED around 2nd expansion , clans got disbanded and so on. I'm amazed it is still releasing content, tried to get back in but then realising it is waaaay too many expansion to BUY to get up to speed and no I don't like skipping content like many nowadays do.

old destiny good, new destiny not so much. I might even tryout redfall if it's on gamepass if you now are comparing it with OLD destiny.

@ember_to_flame: Honestly, I had D1 burnout when I started D2. The game kind of fizzled out for me when it first dropped, so I deleted it and stopped playing. The turning point for me was the Forsaken expansion, that reeled me back in because the previous ones were garbage.

sorry free to play games like destiny are the future, so much so that destiny was forced to become a free to play games.

heres why

1 you know how betas are free? well free to play came can release in beta and get free testers and data to help with development.

2 more people will play a bad free game than pay for a bad game you have to buy.

3 ea itself probably makes more money on mobile sports games than its console sales.more people are playing fifa on mobile than on there consoles any given hour.

4there are to many many games that failed in the past because they cost money but they were good and never got a fan base. a game like league would fail if it was 19.99 at launch.

5. f2p saved the gaming industry there are to many games for them all to cost money. f2p is kinda saying”we think our game is so good, we think your willing to buy a few things to support the game in the cash shop”

instead of being like cyber punk and promising the world and delivering poop for 69.99

Is this a gut feeling? Are there any facts to suggest this is true? Your whole premise is based on a 'maybe, probably, whatever.'

@warmeatgames:

1. Fan exploitation to test a broken product isn't a good thing, dude, and plenty of games abandon development/polishing before they're finished.

2. To a point, then they just stop playing any of your games at all because they're always bad games.

3. Everyone hates EA. Coincidence?

4. And there are many F2P games that were good, but failed, for the simple fact that they are F2P games. It's called marketing. And in my experience, the "good" games that failed are rarely as good as people say they are. It's usually rather easy to identify exactly where the game failed.

5. Er...dude, you just identified F2P as being a way for bad games to retain customers. And I dunno what you've been smoking but suggesting F2P "saved" gaming is just...lol. Gaming was hardly on the verge of collapse before F2P came along. The reality is since F2P came along, and service gaming in general, there has been a huge spike in crappy, bug filled games.

@olddadgamer: Bingo. Delivering a game worth buying will sell. The whole point of going F2P is to continue raking in the cash long after the game loses steam NOT because it's an inherently better model.

@Barighm: I also think it's something that gives games a second chance, which isn't great for us but great for the publishers. World we live in now, folks will hop on youtube (or "creators" will hop on) and blast a game that has any imperfections. Hell, they get more views if they're ripping something apart than if they're liking it. Pretty soon people (a lot of people) anyway, will start thinking a game sucks because "The internet says so," (by which they mean the four or five "creators" they watch). That happens to a stand alone game, it's DOA. If it happens to a F2P, then the game can say "but...but...wait until the update!" Update happens, "the internet" is all "Hey! It fixed a bunch of stuff!" and whammo. It's back.

Look at the comments here where people say they liked Destiny AFTER it updated/added/whatever.

Yes, every now and again you get a redemption story like Cyberpunk where people started with it again, what, a year after it came out, but, mostly, stand alone games get one bite at the apple and, in this nit picky world we're in, where a group of people who have never played the game can convince the world that it sucks for whatever reason, that's a very risky proposition.

@olddadgamer: Isn't that what I said?

"Pretty soon people (a lot of people) anyway, will start thinking a game sucks because "The internet says so,""

Aren't they already? But yeah, zoomers growing up with these kinds of games are increasingly becoming representative of gamers in general which is pretty sad. These people are being conditioned to become spending machines and that's the way the industry likes it.

"Look at the comments here where people say they liked Destiny AFTER it updated/added/whatever."

They are? I thought they were saying the game still sucked. It certainly seemed worse when I played it, lol. None of the game's inherent problems have been fixed and now you have annoying F2P elements.

"Yes, every now and again you get a redemption story like Cyberpunk"

Cyberpunk isn't a redemption story. It's a reminder of how games are being designed to suck from day one because nobody wants to take the time to optimize their games anymore.

Never could get into Destiny. My son normally loves those types of games and he couldn't get into it either. Its one of those love or hate games I guess.

If as a developer you have to clone other people's work, maybe you're in the wrong business. When I first heard about Redfall, I thought it was going to be more like The Witcher. Then when I saw gameplay, it looked like it was going to be more like Left4Dead. Then it comes out and I'm told its more like Destiny or Borderlands but a really bad Destiny or Borderlands. No idea how anyone could have thought that a game based on vampires would make for a good looter shooter but they were clearly wrong. I remember when I started playing Outer Worlds and a Destiny like menu popped up for armor, weapons, consumables, mats etc. and I was like, ahh shit. That garbage got old long ago. Please stop doing that and come up with your own new ideas.

@bdrtfm: I think you are getting at the wrong idea. It’s not necessarily about copying Destiny per se, but copying Destiny’s model. A live service game a la Destiny, Fornite, Overwatch makes a ton of money because the players spend money on bs and expansions. It’s to me the one thing about the gaming industry I can’t stand. I don’t play those type of games. It doesn’t appeal to me. But I’m not knocking anyone for playing them. And it’s mostly an American thing. Just look at the direction Call of Duty has steered towards. It’s basically a live action first person shooter. Activision has increasingly gone away from the campaign. It’s why I haven’t purchased COD since maybe Black Ops 3. This really does need to stop but unfortunately because game production is so much more expensive the more technology advances. It’s really a double edged sword. It’s why games are $70 now.

On a serious note. Borderlands was a game that kind of brought looter shooters to the spotlights.

Bungie had better ideas on how to capitalize on this genre.

Also, looter shooters were cool like in 2017. Now we are past that and should focus on new trending ideas like open world souls-like a la Elden Ring and The Lords of the Fallen. Or more Action oriented games like Sifu which also was a huge success.

@daidochus: oh that's right. No wonder I saw Borderlands-esque in Redfall gameplay when they opened a fancy box full of colors and numbers.

Borderlands was very intriguing for me, I even pre-ordered it. But the fad grew stale in me fast: only the numbers evolved, and not the rest of the game. Your post reminded me why I shouldn't give Destiny 2 a second chance.

Destiny is every developers wet dream lol. First you had to pay for the base game, then the next expansion and then the next two expansions on top of that. Just like the first game, it costs over $120 to play Destiny fully through.

@id0ntkn0w7: Infinite money for the publisher = infinite money for the developers who work for said publisher. It offers them a safe job where they don't have to be creative, if the game is successful.

@Tiwill44: that isn't how any of that works. I know someone who's working on Pacific Drive and previously worked on a Halo game. I went to high school with programming nerds who knew some of the local developers. There is no such thing as infinite money for the developer. The publisher takes a monstrous cut of the funds. The price of games gets slashed after weeks, too, and even more so after months. It isn't as bad as the music industry, and it isn't even as bad as the film industry, where they make alterations to their deals the same way Vader did with Lando, knowing if the CG team backs out or makes them stick to the agreement they'll just go somewhere else and now they won't work with them going forward. But it is pretty steep.

This image you have of the greedy developer is a myth. Developers are just like you and me, except they have been fortunate/determined/talented enough to land a job making games. Some of them get big heads or otherwise go crazy when they move up to head their own studio, but most of them just want to make the best damn games they can

@Tiwill44: you don't.

Game developers do not create one game, stop all of their other projects, sit back and collect a salary in the form of royalties until a game stops selling. That's not even what a salary is. Have you had a job before? It's more like that.

@id0ntkn0w7: I never said it was in the form of royalties? The team works on the next expansion, bug fixes, new cosmetics to sell in the shop or battle pass, etc. It's just a lot less difficult or risky because they don't have to create a brand new IP or game from scratch.

What game has Bungie made besides Destiny since 2014? Digital Extremes has worked on Warframe since 2013. Psyonix has worked on Rocket League since 2015.

Companies like Blizzard and Ubisoft have many teams, but each team is assigned a project. If that project is a live service game, that specific team will keep working on post-launch content for the game until it stops printing money.

Realistically, most games will need some kind of refresh at one point, or things get stale and the game stops being profitable. Overwatch 2 and Counter-Strike 2 are good examples of that. Same game, fresh coat of paint.

It's a free market, so if that's what sells then that's how it is. But it's an unfortunate reality that plenty of high effort games fail to generate revenue, while other people are seeing success just adding little things to the same game for a decade.

If the project is not a live service game, then yes they have to move to a new project otherwise they would just be laid off.

@Tiwill44: ubisoft keeps making the same two or three games over and over again even without live service.

The risk-averse environment is still fostered by the publisher.

You assume the same individuals stay on the same project. They do not. If you've ever seen how bloated the credits get for a remake, expansion, or DLC-amended game, this is clear. And most publishers don't just make one or two games and support them forever.

All of your arguments have been based in part or wholly on your own assumptions.

The solution is to avoid live service games, unless you actually enjoy them. I gave Destiny a chance and I found it very boring.

In terms of Gaas being unfortunate, I only think so when it encroaches upon other areas. Redfall appears to be a project that would've shown more promise if it hadn't been saddles with the Gaas curse. I have never had any interest in Fortnite but I don't begrudge kids their vapid entertainment. If I were to be sad that uninspired ideas make money, I would be clinically depressed over reality TV, influencers and YA. Trends come and go. For the next five years or so Gaas will be fueled by the money men at publishers and a whole lot more Avengers fiascos will happen. I'm happy to play my Jedi Survivor and Resident Evil VR and pass this trend by

The obsession with online games started when they saw how much money Fornite made selling cosmetics to naive kids. Way more money for way less effort. No wonder they keep trying to replicate Fortnite.

It's funny that you talk about not chasing trends while chasing the trend of comparing any game like this to Destiny. The odd thing is, from my experience and reading others the game is much more like Borderlands then it is Destiny.

@Lord_Sesshy: To be fair, Borderlands used to have good aspects like atmosphere, music and memorable characters, with a story that had a beginning, a middle and an end. Games like Destiny, The Division, Warframe, Redfall, as well as the average modern MMO, are designed with the willful intent of wasting the player's time with dreadful plot and filler game design as the main gameplay loop, with the promise of better loot slapped on top like a carrot on a stick, which attracts people who wish for a game that never ends, which results in infinite money for the developer and publisher without the need to put out another game.

@Tiwill44: Borderlands also allows you to play split screen with your friends without forcing anyone to buy another copy of the game, has drop in and drop out play, and allows you to play however you want and utilize any exploit you want without trying to punish you. Why? Because there is no online service check crap. AND STILL DOES. Those are the aspects that truly matter.

I'm sorry to tell you this, but the cursor thing was popularized by No Man Sky, which came out a year before Destiny. A lot of games suddenly started using it after 2016, and I have no idea why. I'd really appreciate if all these games gave us the option of a traditional highlighter system as well, even if it's not the default.

How they can redeem this game in 1 week:

1 add local drop in play,

2 have a player turn infected if hit by a legendary vampire and join the story mission stopping you, they level up faster, but die when the sun rises or when you stealth kill them instantly,

3 fix the PFS counter to 60fps.

Ah honestly I dunno if they can save this game, it's looking like that arma 3 style Swedish robot apocalypse game, at first it was cool, but was poorly made, but high quality world.

The next is back4blood that games on life support solely because it's world building isn't interesting and it's bosses are sponge buckets.

The only redeemer was evolve it got alot of hate but was interesting.

The slew of new shows on this site is a breath of fresh air and something that has been much needed -- and lacking -- in gaming journalism for years. I really hope Gamespot can refocus on the core competency of analyzing the gaming industry and editorializing it with insightful takes. Minimize the social activism and cater to the core audience: gamers. After all, this is why we visit the site in the first place.

Cheers on the new direction. I hope it can be sustained.

It's a genre based entirely around peer pressure... maybe people are growing tired of it. They incentivize farming for loot indefinitely just to keep up with your friends who only play that game. It's Farmville with guns. Multiplayer games should have the players working together towards a common and meaningful goal, not just beeg number.
