The sequel takes players to a new ocean filled with "vibrant biomes, strange creatures, and hidden secrets." The game supports solo and co-op, and also features crafting and base-building as players attempt to stay alive in the spooky ocean depths.

In terms of multiplayer, up to four people can play together and collaborate to craft tools and build bases. They can also go into battle together against monsters from the deep.

Unknown Worlds said Subnautica 2 launching in early access will allow the studio to collect feedback to hopefully help the final product be the best it can be. This is a full-on sequel, but Unknown Worlds did release a standalone spin-off game called Subnautica: Below Zero in 2021.

GameSpot's review of the original Subnautica scored the game a 9/10. Review Brett Todd wrote, "There is no better virtual way to experience the beauty, and the terror, of the deep blue sea."
