Subscription-based Xbox 720 priced at $300, with $500 standard model?

Windows blogger Paul Thurrott reveals rumored pricing options for Microsoft's next-gen platform, claims always-online requirement is accurate.

Noted Windows blogger Paul Thurrott has claimed during the latest What The Tech episode (via NeoGAF) that the Xbox 720 will launch in November beginning at $300 for a subscription-based model. A standard model will sell for around $500, he said.

No Caption Provided

He described the platform overall as "expensive."

The Xbox 720 won't be the only new Xbox on shelves this season, Thurrott claimed. The writer said Microsoft is planning a $99 "Stingray" Xbox 360. He did not provide any further information about this platform.

Thurrott also shared information about the Xbox 720's reported always-online requirement. He said this is a confirmed feature for the platform, claiming the system's notes specifically state that the Xbox 720 "must be Internet-connected to use."

The Xbox 720 reportedly stops functioning if an Internet connection drops for three minutes.

As for when the Xbox 720 could be announced, Thurrott said Microsoft is planning a reveal event on May 21. This matches up with a recent analyst report suggesting Microsoft was readying a reveal next month.

The blogger added that Microsoft will share further information about the Xbox 720 during two June events: the Electronic Entertainment Expo and the Build 2013 developer conference.

Thurrott further claimed that Microsoft was working on an entertainment-focused Xbox that would not play games. He said this device was called "Yumo," and speculated that Microsoft decided not to pursue this so as not to confuse the market.

A Microsoft representative told GameSpot, "We do not comment on rumors or speculation. We are always thinking about what is next for our platform, but we don't have anything further to share at this time."

Thurrott is a noted Microsoft insider and runs Paul Thurrott's Supersite for Windows.

@tidus2325x As a PC gamer myself, I can safely say that you are down right ignorant. I play the majority of my PC games offline. I live in a well connected part of the country, but my internet still sucks. I don't have connection issues, my it's pretty darn slow. If I had to play everything I have online, it just wouldn't work. This all comes down to an infrastructural limitation.

How about a different example? Do you want an electric car? My guess is you probably don't. Why? Because charging stations for electric cars aren't everywhere the way gas stations are. If I lived in an area of the country with no charging stations it would be pretty pointless to get an electric car. The same goes for this next so-called gaming console. If I am in an area of the country (or world for that matter) that doesn't have very good internet, I have no reason to buy this console.

Here is the other inherent problem with this console; the cost. Here is what I would consider an average yearly cost for this machine. $500 for the standard model. $15/month for Xbox Live (total $180). MINIMUM $30/month for high speed internet (total $360). I would say a new game about every 3 months @ $70/game (total $280). All told, you have just paid $1320 to play 4 games on your Xbox for 1 year. How does that sound to you? Have you 'gotten with the program' yet?

And none of this even touches on the potential privacy disaster that is having a Kinect system viewing your living room at all times and accessible over the internet.

@Seymour47 @tidus2325x I agree on the online part but your electric car example is flimsy and your final math is deceptive.

Just don't try to present your case by the worst numbers to bolster your case. Just say the truth -

$500 console + $60 Xbox Live + $60/game * 4 = $800, not $1320.

Now no one knows if the price of live will change or price of the games, so I'll stick with what I know instead of being disingenuous.

Always online is a very bad idea on principle alone. Even if I have a very reliable internet, I don't want to be online all the time. I don't want my console to be either. I want to play offline single player games and I want the console to be online-capable but not always-online.

@fanirama @Seymour47 @tidus2325x You are correct about my electric car example being flimsy, but it was something I came up with off the top of my head. It still assesses the problem of a lack of built up infrastructure as the major issue though.

@fanirama @Seymour47 @tidus2325x You neglected to add the cost of internet. I don't care if you say it's disingenuous or worst case scenario. It IS a required cost. And, yes, it's possible that games will stay at $60, but according to basically all reports as well as past trends, the price will rise to $70. Hell, you can even take the cost of Xbox Live out of the equation, because we don't know if that will be a requirement. You still end up with a cost of $1140.

@Shielder7 @joshianup06 Agreed. This is unlikely to make any significant changes to the PC gaming market. Despite what people claim, you really can't compare the two. The markets just aren't that similar. What you will have is an absolute destruction of the Microsoft Gaming department. Sony will recover from what has to be considered a fairly disastrous console generation with the PS3 (by their standards) and return to being the top dog in consoles. The Wii U is already pretty much dead an buried at this point.

I have to say that I hope it's not true regarding the system not working if my internet goes out--which sadly has and will happen from time to time. I have a cable connection and it's always connected to my xbox, but it would suck if Mediacom starts having an issue and now I can't play my system. I want the option to play offline.

If this is all being done because of Piracy than I dont think this is the solution. Why not follow the steps like steam and make games freaking dirt cheap that you buy even if you dont intend to play them. I am sure every gamer who uses steam buys impulsively in steam sale just for the heck of it that they might play it some day.

Playstation plus is actually coming out to be a great service as not only they provide discount, they also provide free games and change free titles every now and then which makes up for the value of the fee.

Always online is not the solution to piracy, people pirate games because they are expensive, 60 bucks for 1 game is too much when the game doesnt have much replay value or quality. I can list hundreds of game that fall onto this category. Ofcourse there are games like Bioshock, MGS, GOW etc which I feel worth spending 60 bucks but this cant be extended to ALL games that are released.

Companies need to come out with a better strategy than forcing things on gamers. This actually leads to even more piracy. In any case I have been using ps since original playstation and was thinking of switching to xbox just for the change of flavor but by the looks of it, I will stay PS for now.

My 360 is always connected to the Internet. My PC is always connected to the Internet. My PS3 is always connected to the Internet. I live in the middle of no where. Not being able to play something the few times a year we get violent weather isn't going to effect my decision about what console I buy.

@hosedandhappy that is not the point, the point is single player mode doesnt need an online connectivity, when you play single player you do not communicate with others and you do not send anything to game servers, you play campaign or story mode which are stored on a games disk and/or hdd, therefore single player is not an extra feature, developers do not need to work extra to include it.

@hosedandhappy Wow you're freaking stupid. "I have a great connection. So should you." That's the vibe I'm getting from you.

I've been in places that have shoddy internet that cuts in and out seemingly at random. I can still surf the web, cause once a web page is loaded, internet can cut right out and you'll still be able to view the page. But stuff that requires a more consitent connection (streaming Youtube videos, playing Starcraft 2) can and do just stop working.

Idiots like you who refuse to see these things are too self absorbed to realize that some problems actually do exist, even if they don't necessarily for you

@hosedandhappy Its the principle of the matter, Microsoft has grown too big for its shoes and thinks it can shovel its crappy requirements down everyone's throat regardless of what the gaming community wants. I'm sorry, but I don't feel the need to 'check in' with an online service every time I want to relax at home, internet or no internet. Call me old fashioned, but there used to be this thing called 'privacy' people used to have. When everything I do is monitored because its 'always online', I don't appreciate my personal information and demographic patterns being broadcast over the planet to 3rd party information collects (Almost every company shares your information these days). Better yet, I'll keep my privacy and Microsoft can suck it, I don't need Big Brother in my living room.

@hosedandhappy You obviously don't see the bigger picture here: In past console releases the new features made the consoles more desirable. Other than graphics alone, are you seriously excited about anything the new Xbox is bringing to the table? Let's go through the list: It will be very expensive, require to be always on, won't support used or last gen games, will require a subscription, the games will cost more, and it will have built in Kinect (Not new and gimmicky at best) as well as a Blu-Ray player (Again, not new, most people already have a blu ray player, this isn't 2005). Sounds like an expensive headache to me, I'll be gaming on my PC and whatever console appeals to me most, but Microsoft's next Xbox won't be it.

Do you often buy a product with poor features just because of the ramifications it might have for the future of an industry? In my original post I said I don't care about how much it costs because if it has these kinds of features then I won't be buying it. Why is that hard to understand? I can't control what features Microsoft puts into its consoles, and so by not purchasing it, I vote with my wallet. I understand what the precedent is, but what can I do to change it as a customer other than simply not buy it? I support products which I like and will use, not the other way around. Obviously your condescending tone and poorly written replies were not worth the clarification. Try reading this again, and then realizing that you'

Sure some rumors have merit, but I'm still not deciding what to do until the product is shipped. Even with an announcement of what the system will do, it may need to change last minute for proper release. In the end my dollar will go to where I feel the best place.

Speaking as an average gamer (1 or 2 games a month) and if the information is true, I don't see the point of buying the next Xbox. I have little care for a system "registering" my game to an account. Give the stupid thing a grace period to activate and call it good. I don't resell or buy used games as a matter of course, so those arguments are of little concern to me. The $500.00 price point is of little consequence if it's going to last for 6+ years. I don't game online because I prefer the personal, immersive experience of a single player mode. After the D3 and SimCity disasters (participated in the first, watched the second), I have no desire to be part of an "Always On" experience again.

A console needs to be friendly to use, some fun in its game selection, and not be invasive. If it shuts off because it can't "call home" every three minutes, than it's really not worth it. Even folks with FiOS/FTTH connections can't expect that pure 100% reliability. I didn't upgrade to Windows 8 because I don't want a tile interface on my computer and the entire OS just seemed counter intuitive. I won't buy the Xbox 720 if the thing shuts off during a boss run or whatever. It's not worth that frustration.
