Subscription-based Xbox 720 priced at $300, with $500 standard model?

Windows blogger Paul Thurrott reveals rumored pricing options for Microsoft's next-gen platform, claims always-online requirement is accurate.

Noted Windows blogger Paul Thurrott has claimed during the latest What The Tech episode (via NeoGAF) that the Xbox 720 will launch in November beginning at $300 for a subscription-based model. A standard model will sell for around $500, he said.

No Caption Provided

He described the platform overall as "expensive."

The Xbox 720 won't be the only new Xbox on shelves this season, Thurrott claimed. The writer said Microsoft is planning a $99 "Stingray" Xbox 360. He did not provide any further information about this platform.

Thurrott also shared information about the Xbox 720's reported always-online requirement. He said this is a confirmed feature for the platform, claiming the system's notes specifically state that the Xbox 720 "must be Internet-connected to use."

The Xbox 720 reportedly stops functioning if an Internet connection drops for three minutes.

As for when the Xbox 720 could be announced, Thurrott said Microsoft is planning a reveal event on May 21. This matches up with a recent analyst report suggesting Microsoft was readying a reveal next month.

The blogger added that Microsoft will share further information about the Xbox 720 during two June events: the Electronic Entertainment Expo and the Build 2013 developer conference.

Thurrott further claimed that Microsoft was working on an entertainment-focused Xbox that would not play games. He said this device was called "Yumo," and speculated that Microsoft decided not to pursue this so as not to confuse the market.

A Microsoft representative told GameSpot, "We do not comment on rumors or speculation. We are always thinking about what is next for our platform, but we don't have anything further to share at this time."

Thurrott is a noted Microsoft insider and runs Paul Thurrott's Supersite for Windows.

@QueerGamersXist @adam8093 Yeah, until more and more PC games start to go the route of Sim City and Diablo III...Don't be surprised if that happens. I think it is only a matter of time before all platforms will have this feature, whether it is dictated by the OS or the actual game itself. More and more things are trending this way.

Here's your XBox ### itinerary... 1. Open with blitz of gameplay from past successful 360 games. 2. Talk about how awesome Xbox 360 was at length. 3. Introduce "the future" with a series of child actors using Kinect 2. 4. Show Forza, let developer discuss his unhealthy attraction to pistons. 5. Show pre-rendered Halo trailer. More Halo self indulgent discussion. 6. Show a long list of non-gaming partners like Comcast, HBO, CNN. Silently quip about the always-on requirement but using cryptic terms like "persistent experience from the moment you turn on your Xbox" 7. Blitz more trailers of shiny happy people dancing, cut in with random clips of main stream news outlets and Jimmy Falon talking about Xbox. 8. Close out with some exclusive trailer like CoD: Ghost or a new Gears. 9. Order Pizza

If MS actually decides to go in this direction they will lose six XBL accounts, three systems and every single Title purchase from that point on. Not to mention the multiple ppl inside of my network that have claimed the very same. I am a mature gamer that holds the butter for this family and will not be bullied into buying a system and allow MS to treat me in anyway they see fit. TRUST ME MS, I jumped ship from Sony to dance with you and will be more then happy to jump back or try another system out that listens to its following speaking up very loud and very clear. And what are the truest of MS fans and loyal gamers saying? DO NOT FORCE ALWAYS ON CONNECTION onto us.

So whats next? Cars? Houses? TVs and simple electronics? Honestly, Used games are a viable resource for the consumer just as are Cars, Housing, and other items that have been part of the fair trade market. Now since you are not making every single dollar from every title purchase in every way you are going to attempt shutting that entire side of the market down. I refuse.

If Sony, Nitendo, and Google have the common sense not to allow an always-on connection and MS does NOT, well, GOODBYE MICROSHAFT. I will defect to the platforms that truely understand what the general consumer wants and needs.

WE, THE CONSUMER, REFUSE TO BE DRIVEN INTO A DIRECTION THAT DOES NOT HAVE OUT BEST INTERESTS AT THE FOREFRONT. WE WILL NOT SUPPORT COMPANIES THAT CONTINUE TO TREAT US SIMILAR TO CATTLE. YOU MAY CASH COW MILLIONS, THIS TIME YOU WILL BE THE COW AND SENT TO SLAUGHTER. MS, YOU MAY WANT TO STEP BACK YOUR EFFORTS OF FORCING AN ALWAYS-ON CONNECTION UPON YOUR VERY FAITHFUL FOLLOWERS BEFORE YOU FIND YOURSELF THROWING THOSE VERY FANS UNTO YOUR COMPETITION BECAUSE THEY REALIZED THAT WITHOUT SATISFYING THE CONSUMER YOU WILL LOSE SALES(WITH OR WITHOUT AN ALWAYS-ON CONNECTION),

I can honestly say MS, if you do not listen and continue in this greedy direction that I will be greatly saddened by the departure of our relationship and will miss you and the good days we had. And they were great. But as with any relationship in human society, there must be some give and take and this will take far to much and I as well as many others will refuse to continue being mistreated.

@IRISH_VANDAL I'm right with you my friend. I'm a customer of both Sony and MS. I've been an XBL subscriber since the early days on the 1st gen XBOX. But all it will take is this always-on to get me to go Sony exclusive. Unfortunately, I fear this is the way of the future. Sony may be avoiding this discussion now to make themselves look more attractive than MS, but it is a matter of time before more game publishers and console manufactures start to adopt this feature.

I do not see Microsoft using always on. I think they are keeping up the attention till they announce that always on was never going t happen. Then the other bad news will not seem so bad, and FANS will rejoice.

http://www.vgleaks.com/microsoft-xbox-roadmap-2013/ This is not much better but microsoft will still take it, along with Live price increase....

@Ravenlore_basic This actually makes more sense vs. the running rumor that Sony fanboys love to perpetuate, which says that you can't play games without a connection. I have no issues with the always-on feature as long as I can still play offline if I'm unable to get a connection.

I've been a loyal fan of Xbox for over 12 years and I'm on my fourth system I play some much but Microsoft had better be reading these trade blogs cause I got news for them: Listen up Microsoft!
If you make the next system online only you will loose a long time consumer in me. I don't play well with others so why the hell would I want a system that forces me to be online plus all the extra cost to make that happen in my household. If you push that hard you can go **** yourselves. Also If you make It impossible to play used disk or even backwards compatible games then you WILL loose me as a long time consumer. Our household is always tight and It's hard enough for me to justify my gaming expenses to my wife so Don't make It impossible for me to sway my wife into buying the next system.Get your heads out of the clouds and listen to what the consumers want. Not all consumers want an "always on line system" nor do we have the kind of money to start a game collection from scratch just because You want to get greedy!!! Tread carefully because If these rumors become fact then you'll be cutting off your nose in spite of your face.

I agree. We have too much going on in the world to be spending $500 on a console that only works online and $70 per game.

n most likely XBL/PSN wont be the same accounts as they are now. just like Xbl for xbox 1 didnt work for the new xbox 360 account. and the same went for ps2 psn accounts to ps3 psn accounts totally new sign up accounts so that new sub that comes with the next xbox would be useful

lol we act as if b/c we play off line we are more safer from hackers. when that would be true in the old days of no online at all. but n these's new days if you have an account of any kind online psn/xboxlive/hotmail/yahoo/ign it can be hacked even if you don't ever sign in to you'er account so the ppl say by having next xbox always online ppl would be more at risk that's simple not true they would be no more at risk then they are now.xbl IS ALWAYS ONLINE NOW

Honestly being on the fence I feel like this worries me. I was actually considering siding with Xbox this generation (I didn't take sides in the last gen, mostly just PC gaming) but if these trends hold up and this is the truth I assure you I'll be buying a PS4.

@thenephariouson These rumours are sounding more and more like purposeful leaks from MS to prepare people for these shitty features. The more rumours that come out and claim "always online" the less people will actually shit themselves when they do the reveal, and make "always online" an official announcement.

MS Hari Kari

I have had both the 360 and the PS3 for a while and although I use my 360 more it is undeniable that Sony wants to please customers more. I subscribed to PS plus and I turned on my console the other day to find out that Demons Souls was temporarily a free download to play.....do you know how awesome that made my weekend..... Microsoft never made me feel like that and it looks like they dont plan to. They want to make it worse. If this turns out to be true Im leaving you MS and you will miss me when Im gone. You are not the same gaming company I fell in love with.....thats why I have been cheating on you with Sony.

Why the hell are people going crazy over these Xbox rumors. You look through comments and forums and people are taking it all as truth. They are RUMORS and as for the price $500 is about what I expect for both the new Xbox and the PS4,sure how much was the PS3 at launch?

@xgraderx Because these rumours are coming from increasingly legit sources, and these rumours are devestating if they turn out to be true. THIS is why people are going crazy.
