Suicide Squad 2 May Not Be Directed By Mel Gibson

The Shallows director Jaume Collet-Serra is now reportedly the frontrunner.

Earlier this year, it was reported that Warner Bros. was considering Mel Gibson to direct the Suicide Squad sequel. While the studio might have spoken to the Oscar-winner about taking the helm, it looks like he won't be directing it. Deadline reports today that The Shallows director Jaume Collet-Serra is now the frontrunner to direct Suicide Squad 2.

David Ayer wrote and directed the 2016 original Suicide Squad, but he's now making the spinoff Gotham City Sirens.

As for Collett-Serra, he also directed Orphan, Unknown, and Non-Stop. His latest movie, 2016's The Shallows, starred Blake Lively as a surfer who got trapped in the water and was surrounded by a shark.

Suicide Squad was not a huge hit with critics, but the movie was still one of the biggest box office smashes of 2016. Actor Joel Kinnaman, who played Rick Flag in the supervillain team-up, said the sequel could start shooting in 2018.

So much "reporting" on rumour and speculation. How about we wait until there is actual news to report.

I wonder if David Ayer knows he's talentless? I just watched Suicide Squad a few days ago and it was easily the worst written and directed movie I've seen in a very long time.

The whole thing gave me the impression that it was written and directed by a high school student interested in film. You can tell what he was going for, but had no idea how to get there.

@93ChevyNut: While it has flaws, calling the the worst is simply hyperbole. Likely you went in to the movie looking to reinforce your preconceived notions. When you go in looking to hate, you will find it.

@straightcur: No hyperbole here. It really was the worst movie I've seen in a long time. Maybe that's because I tend to gravitate towards great movies, who knows (I'm kind of a movie buff and I don't have time to see a lot of movies). I went in expecting it to be on par with a lot of the other superhero movies I've seen. This one was simply trite and predictable, much like a story that I would expect a (very) young writer to create.

The guy that played Rick Flag makes Vin Diesel seem dynamic.

@93ChevyNut: fair enough, i disagree. While it wasn't a cinematic masterpiece, nor was it meant to be, it was fun. And that's all it was aiming to be.

also, "I'm kind of a movie buff and I don't have time to see a lot of movies" . Isnt that an oxymoron? Go see more movies, then you can call yourself a movie buff. :)

@straightcur: My inability to see a large number of movies is a recent thing. I've seen hundreds (perhaps thousands) and I know good from bad. Besides, I don't think being a movie buff means you watch a lot of movies. It means you have the artistic palette necessary to delineate between them. Food critics generally aren't binge eaters....

My goodness I sound pretentious. My apologies. :)

Can we just stop paying attention to that guy? Lock him in a room with Jared Leto and they can make their own film.

It seems DC want to treat their movie franchise like a Suicide Squad.

It's not the opportune time for a second one yet. Wait for the next Batman film, and maybe a few others. People are still recovering from the mess of the first movie.

I was concerned that Sucicide Squad 2 might actually be good when they said Mel Gibson will make it. No worries though, if dc has a chance to ruin something good, they will most likely not avoid the opportunity.

File this under "No S***, Sherlock." Did anyone really think that Mel Gibson would wallow in the gutter with one of these superhero franchises? And not even one of the GOOD superhero franchises! The man is above this crap, and it would be a shame for him to be wasting his time on this stuff. He KNOWS he's too good for this crap.

I'd rather they make something not suicide squad honestly.

Just let the IP die and reboot it in like 10 years.

Odd, since "The Shallows" pretty much describes the plot and character development of the first Suicide Squad film.

WB, you can do better.

It's an easy task for the next director actually, because the first one is so bad that no way the sequel could stoop lower

Just when you think DC/WB is starting to get it with Wonder Woman...they drop Mel Gibson in favor of a guy that directed some shitty shark movie.

Even if Uwe Boll directed it could it really be worse than the first? I mean all you have to do is NOT make the sequel an extra long music video and you're already a step above the first Suicide Squad.
