Suicide Squad Breaks Another Box Office Record

The David Ayer-directed Suicide Squad didn't get the best reviews, but that hasn't kept viewers from flocking to the theaters to see it. The film pulled in around $135 million in the US for its opening weekend, shattering the previous record for an August release held by 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy. Now, the DC Comics action movie has broken another box office record.

Deadline reports that the film made $13.1 million on Monday, representing a new record for an August movie. The previous record-holder was Guardians of the Galaxy, which made $11.7 million in the US on the Monday after its release.

Looking ahead to this weekend, Deadline reports that Suicide Squad is on track to make $51 million-$54 million in the Friday-Sunday window. This would be a 60%-61% drop-off from its record-setting opening and below Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice's 69% slide for its second weekend.

Suicide Squad will go up against new arrivals including the animated comedy Sausage Party and Pete's Dragon this weekend.

On a global basis, Suicide Squad has pulled in more than $280 million, according to Box Office Mojo.

In other news about Suicide Squad, Harley Quinn actress Margot Robbie recently offered up a theory on why so many of Jared Leto's Joker scenes were cut from the movie.
