Suicide Squad Could Break August Box Office Record With as Much as $140 Million
It could also become Will Smith's best opening ever, surpassing 2007's I Am Legend.
Next month's Suicide Squad is expected to be a big-time moneymaker that could set a US box office record for the month of August.
Hollywood news site Deadline reports that opening-weekend projections for the movie are ranging from $125 million to $140 million. It doesn't need to make that much money to set a new record for an August movie, however. The current August No. 1 is Guardians of the Galaxy, which made $94.3 million during August 2014.
Suicide Squad could also become the biggest opening for a Will Smith movie. His current best-performer is 2007's I Am Legend, which pulled in $77.2 million in the US for its debut weekend.
In other news about Suicide Squad, tickets go on sale tomorrow, July 15. The movie opens a few weeks later, on August 5.
Suicide Squad will have a heavy presence at San Diego Comic-Con this month. Warner has announced a wide range of themed events and promotional activities, in addition to appearances from the film's ensemble cast.
Suicide Squad is directed by David Ayer, and tells the story of a group of death row supervillains who are employed covertly by the US government to perform dangerous missions, in return for reduced prison sentences.
It stars Jared Leto as Joker, Joker, Margot Robbie as Herley Quinn, and Smith as Deadshot. Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, and Jay Hernandez will also appear, with Ben Affleck making a cameo appearance as Batman.
