The Suicide Squad soundtrack has gone gold, meaning it has sold more than 500,000 copies. Atlantic Records executive Kevin Weaver made the announcement on Instagram this week, pointing out that the soundtrack needed only six weeks to sell half-a-million copies (via The Hollywood Reporter).

Suicide Squad: The Album, as it's called, becomes the first soundtrack released in 2016 to achieve gold status. Weaver told Billboard on August that Atlantic Records was involved with the movie at an early stage and at a deep level, which may have contributed to the record's success.

"We were fortunate enough to spend a lot of time with the director of the film, David Ayer," Weaver said. "We really dug in deep with them in the preliminary stages right when they got back from shooting the picture, and we started to identify the various music cues, what the sound of the movie was going to be, what we all felt the music needs of the picture were."

One of the most notable songs on the Suicide Squad soundtrack is "Heathens" by Twenty One Pilots. But the overall soundtrack is quite varied, also featuring bands like Creedence Clearwater Revival, Skrillex, and Grimes, among others.

"Being able to tap into such a wide range of artists, give them assignments, show them footage, and connect them into David, was a really interesting way to go about the development of the music," Weaver said.

Suicide Squad did not get the best reviews, but the film has made more than $720 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo. A sequel is reportedly in development.
