Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster Has Been Delayed

The remaster will no longer be released in 2023.

The upcoming remaster of the first two Suikoden games, titled Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars, has been delayed to an unknown date. Konami says the Suikoden team will be working on getting the remaster ready for release "as soon as possible."

The delay was announced on Twitter in what is now an all-too-familiar format for game delays. "Despite the very best efforts of our dedicated development staff to release the remasters in 2023, additional time is needed to ensure the quality performance and gameplay experience our users deserve," the announcement from Konami reads.

While no new release window is given for the game, Konami says it will be released as soon as possible, and that more updates will be shared on the Suikoden social media accounts and website.

The Suikoden 1 and 2 remasters will be released on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, and will also be playable on current-gen consoles PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Short of being a full remake, the remasters will include improvements to graphics including lighting and shadows, redesigned cutscenes, new HD character portraits by the original artist, improvements to the game's sound, and various new quality-of-life features.

Suikoden is a classic JRPG that was first released in 1995 for the PlayStation, with a direct sequel Suikoden 2 arriving in 1998. The upcoming remake is the first time the games will be released for consoles.

Suikoden II is simply one of the best video games ever made. Very excited about this release and hope it means bright things for Suikoen’s future. It’s really a great time to be a Suikoden fan, with the original Suikoden creator Yoshitaka Murayama releasing its spiritual successor, Eiyuden Chronicle, early next year. And man, does that game look good.

Some of the best games ever.

But you know, the Konami board are such A-holes to like the 1000th degree. I just wonder, that if they are pushing back, or allowing the remake of the games to fall back, just to coincide with the Rabbit and Bear developers who are making the spiritual successor to Suikoden games. Because ,Konami would be glad to screw over their old creators, because they are just that petty.

...Developer Rabbit & Bear Studios announced today that it won't be launching this year, as the studio aims for a Q2 2024 window instead....

Because, if both land at the same time, it is more likely that Suikoden remasters 1&2 will bury any news of Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes. Just to spite the old developers who long left Konami over their financial dealings with their game creators. I mean, Suikoden was kind of niche to begin with, (but beloved) and those who know that the 4 main head developers, who created all things Suikoden are now making Eiyuden Chronicle is even fewer. If both sets of games launch at around the same time, it will really hurt initial sales. But if the remasters come out, like about 4-6 months before EC comes out, that could actually help R&B's new game sales numbers. Konami became impossible to work with, and refused to allow Yoshi to even use the IP name in any way. (Yoshitaka Murayama, the director.) one of the greatest game developers to ever live.

I am just very happy to see a 25yr old property from the 5th gen, get new life breathed into it. Those were some of the best games ever made. I was especially fond of Sui 2, wow what a game. I even liked 3 and 5 and tactics! Oh, i just thought, if all of these games land when FF7R -part 2 hits... wow will they get buried. But next year is looking to be a great time for JRPGs lovers like me.

@jenovaschilld: There’s definitely something weird going on. Those remakes are basically finished. We saw how far the development was when they previewed the games earlier this year. But I don’t think they’re trying to spite Eiyuden, I think they’re actually coordinating with the team. When the Suikoden games were previewed, there was interviews and promo done by the original Suikoden team (the now Eiyuden development team) at the Konami event. So it means that they have a good relationship behind the scenes. I think they’re probably looking to coordinate so their promotion benefits each other.

@chriss_m: That is great to hear. I just hope they release the remakes a few months before and or a few months after Eiyuden, with a nod and wink to Yoshi and his team. Hopefully not right on their head in Q2 of 24'

I am glad that Konami has went back to AAA console games and that they are all trying to get along. Now I remember late 7th gen and 8th gen during the lethargic Japan developer period and the Earthquake that killed and destroyed areas where some worked, when Konami ceo and main board of directors were openly warring against all of the development teams like Kojima and Yoshi's as Konami want to move into the Chinese mobile gaming market.

Konami lost their asses during the 8th gen in China, and limped their way back to serious AAA non mobile games. Hopefully repairing ties and dusting off great old IPs like Suikoden, Castlevania, Metal gear, Zone of Enders, Baseball, DDR, and more.

Sad, but not unexpected, that slapping together a simple remaster would be too much for a modern AAA publisher to handle on a budget and a schedule.
