Super Mario 3D All-Stars Features Three Fantastic Platformers

Here's something to make you feel old--the original Super Mario Bros. turns 35 years old this month, and Nintendo is celebrating the anniversary by announcing a ton of games that will release for Switch, and even an updated handheld device. This includes the rumored Super Mario 3D All-Stars, which includes some of the most acclaimed games of all time, as well as what is essentially a Mario battle royale. If you've ever wanted a real Mario Kart course in your house, that's an option, too. You could even make your cats part of your hazards. We don't recommend getting real lava.

Releasing before Spring 2021, the Mario games announced during the latest Nintendo Direct presentation celebrate both the classic 2D and the 3D eras. Most of them are updated versions of previous games for systems like the Nintendo 64 and Wii U, but Nintendo has still found a way to make them even more creative. You'll even be able to complete My Nintendo challenges for a shot at a free pin set. However, you'll have to wait to complete the missions, as the final mission is to either take part in a race that hasn't started yet or purchase an upcoming game. You should also be aware that some of the upcoming Mario games and products will be available for a limited time. This even applies to digital copies in some cases.

Super Mario 3D All-Stars

Super Mario 3D All-Stars includes Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy. These aren't full-fledged remakes, but they do include enhancements and new features. Super Mario 64 features a higher resolution, rumble-enabled controls on the Joy-Con controllers, and the ability to browse the soundtrack and pick your favorite songs. Super Mario Sunshine includes the same controller and soundtrack features as well as a new 16:9 aspect ratio, and Super Mario Galaxy also gets a resolution bump. One game missing is Super Mario Galaxy 2. Hardcore Nintendo fans are a little disappointed about that omission. The game built on the formula of its predecessor, but it also included Yoshi for more varied and interesting platforming. We wouldn't be surprised if it still came to Switch eventually.

Super Mario 3D All-Stars is set for a September 18 release date and is available to pre-order now, but will only be on sale for about six months. This applies not just to the physical version, but to the digital version, as well. As a bonus, the original Super Mario All-Stars collection is available today for Nintendo Switch Online. The collection updated the first three games to resemble the 16-bit art style of Super Mario World on the SNES.

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury

An updated version of the terrific Wii U game, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury will feature additional content, including online cooperative play, compared to the previous version and release for Switch on February 12, 2021. There will also be new Cat Mario and Cat Peach Amiibo figures released alongside it. It's available to pre-order now.

Super Mario Bros. 35

Did Nintendo turn Super Mario Bros. into a battle royale? Yes, it basically did. Only available from October 1 until March 31, 2021, Super Mario Bros. 35 tasks you with being the last Mario remaining in a battle to the death. As you defeat enemies, you will get extra time and can even attack other players. It requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership to play.

Game & Watch: Super Mario Bros.

One of Nintendo's earliest video game devices was the Game & Watch, a line of very simple handheld systems. It's back for Game & Watch: Super Mario Bros., an updated version that can play the first Super Mario Bros. game. as well as the Lost Levels. It also includes the classic Ball game, functions as a clock, and has some hidden secrets that you can experience for up to eight hours between charges. It's out on November 13 for $50. Pre-orders will be coming soon.

Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit

Perhaps the strangest bit of news we saw today, Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit lets you use a Nintendo Switch system to race physical carts with custom courses. You can play through a Grand Prix and unlock new costumes as you race with up to three other players. It will be available in Mario and Luigi sets on October 16 for $100. Other players who join you locally will need their own vehicles. As you can see in the image above, you can get creative with actually building your course. Put a cat in there. Throw in some paper plates. Go nuts.
