Super Mario Odyssey, More Switch Games Top Amazon's Best-Selling Game Charts In 2017

Hats off.

Amazon has revealed its 100 best-selling video games of 2017. While the list encompasses all of the game-related products the online retailer sold throughout the past year, the actual list of best-selling games was dominated by Nintendo, which published seven of Amazon's top 10 titles by platform in 2017.

The best-selling game on Amazon for 2017 was Super Mario Odyssey, the first major Mario game for Switch and GameSpot's No. 3 pick for Game of the Year. It was followed by Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and the Switch version of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, while Splatoon 2, Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, and the Wii U version of Breath of the Wild rounded out the top 10.

The PS4-exclusive adventure Horizon: Zero Dawn was also one of Amazon's most popular titles of 2017, coming in at No. 4. Call of Duty: WWII, which Activision touted was the No. 1 game in North America by revenue, also took two spots on Amazon's top 10 list; the PS4 version was No. 5, with the Xbox One version following at No. 6. Some of Amazon's other top-selling titles include Destiny 2, Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle, and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy.

While Super Mario Odyssey was the best-selling game on Amazon, the most popular game-related product was the $20 PlayStation Store gift card, with the $10 variant coming in second. The most popular console on Amazon was the Switch, while the DualShock 4 controller was the best-selling accessory. You can see the complete list of Amazon's best-selling game products here.

I can see the logic behind this. Not to discredit Nintendo; they've been having a great year and I'm super happy to see their return to form after the disastrous Wii U.

1) Amazon Prime members get 20% off preordered games and arrive on day one.

2) NINTENDO GAMES NEVER GO ON SALE. So this is the best deal you'll probably ever get. Nintendo rarely has sales. Wii U launch title New Super Mario Bros U is still $60 MSRP and used Pokemon games increase in value over time weirdly enough. Try finding HeardGold/SoulSilver for under $50.

3) Flash memory is limited on Switch and it seems only a small handful of 3rd party games still need installations. 1st party games don't seem to need any so buying on a cartridge is a no-brainer.

4) THE GAME IS AMAZING!!!

Wow! Now that is truly both amazing and shocking at the same time.

I understand Amazon is just 1 retailer but I would never have guessed Super Mario Odyssey would have beaten out the likes of such a revenue juggernaut like COD let alone some of the other notable games that graced 2017. Nintendo really DID have a great year.

@videogameninja: Yeah, but, even with what @Pyrosa is saying below about digital, if they combined physical sales on PS4 and X1 (which they haven't) I wonder where it would be.

Agree with the tip of the hat, though. That's a whole mess of Nintendo games on there.

Remember when the WiiU was flopping and people were all "Well, Nintendo is done?" Good times, good times.

@olddadgamer: If they were to include all of the items offered in the video games section, I can guarantee that the cards needed to buy PlayStation digital games would come out on top, by a large margin. That there shows that digital sales included would tip this in a much less favorable direction for Nintendo.

@videogameninja: Physical vs digital... Very relevant in this case.

Still, agreed that it's significant.

@Pyrosa:

Yes every year physical sales become less relevant.

Although I still like physical, I see a bigger benefit more for digital.

The switch having little memory makes game carts more prominent.
