Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance Single-Player Hands-On

There are almost countless significant changes and improvements in this stand-alone follow-up to the epic real-time strategy game Supreme Commander.

It seems as if it was so long ago that Supreme Commander first appeared, but THQ and Gas Powered Games' epic-scale real-time strategy game was released only this past February. Fast-forward about eight months, and the two companies are nearing release of Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance, a stand-alone follow-up that will introduce a powerful new alien faction and a new campaign. However, the changes in this follow-up are significant, and they belie the short development time that Forged Alliance has had.

Forged Alliance upgrades Supreme Commander in almost every way, including visually.
Forged Alliance upgrades Supreme Commander in almost every way, including visually.

Forged Alliance picks up a year or two after the events of Supreme Commander, and it turns out that a lot happened between when you "won" that game and the beginning of Forged Alliance. The firing of the Black Sun superweapon actually opened a portal to another dimension, which allowed the powerful Seraphim aliens to invade. The aliens are driven by a belief that they must wipe out all human life from the galaxy, and this forces the surviving United Earth Federation and Cybran Nation factions to make an alliance. The Aeon Illuminate has mostly sided with the aliens, though some Aeon rebels have joined up with the UEF and Cybran coalition.

The six-mission single-player campaign doesn't sound like a lot, but judging from the first mission, you'll be thrown into a full-scale war with little ramp-up. That's in contrast to Supreme Commander's campaigns, which gradually eased you into the gameplay. The downside to the original game was that you barely got to play with any of the upper-tier and experimental units before the campaigns were over. However, in Forged Alliance, you'll have access to almost everything in your arsenal at the get-go, and the opening mission is a desperate struggle in which you defend and then counterattack against multiple opponents. That fits in with the last-stand theme of the campaign, because the coalition of allies is near the edge of annihilation at the hands of the Seraphim.

On first appearance, Forged Alliance doesn't look so much like a follow-up than it does a full sequel. Almost everything looks better than in Supreme Commander, right down to the loading screen for a mission. The interface has been completely overhauled, and it looks a lot better and more informative than before. The graphics have also been given a boost, given that the polygon count on units looks as if it has at least doubled or tripled. The textures have also been entirely redone, so there's a lot more detail on everything. Then there are a ton of new visual effects, from the gorgeous flak bursts of antiaircraft cannons to the smoke trails on missiles. The difference between Supreme Commander and Forged Alliance is like night and day, visually.

Gargantuan battles are the bread-and-butter of the single-player campaign.
Gargantuan battles are the bread-and-butter of the single-player campaign.

The changes aren't just limited to the visuals, either. Most of the gameplay has basically been retuned. Sure, there's the new faction and new units for existing factions, but most of the rest has also been tweaked. Build times for many units feel altered, and ditto for repair times. For instance, we had Tech 3 UEF air-superiority fighters that were battered in several dogfights and had landed at an air staging facility for repair and refueling. In Supreme Commander, repairs could be done within seconds, even on the most damaged of aircraft. In Forged Alliance, repairs can take minutes, which is a huge change. Now you've got to really make sure you've got enough air staging facilities to keep a large air force flying at all times.

We haven't had a chance to check out the new Seraphim race and what it can do, but we were on the receiving end of some of its units, including an experimental titan that makes the Aeon's galactic colossus look kind of wimpy. It was pretty brutal, and the Seraphim can dish out plenty of damage quickly. We'll keep on playing around with Forged Alliance for now, but get ready for some major changes to how you play Supreme Commander. Forged Alliance ships next month.

one question can this game be tuned to a lower detail than before being stuck at 1024 x 760's a real big strain on my PC and the orig supreme commander turns turtle during the real big fights, mines only a raytheon but i doubled the RAM up to 1GB and save for the Basics only supreme commanders in there

this game is going to be so frakin good i just can't wait. SupCom was so revolutionary when it came and it had me hooked the first day i got it home and i still can't stop playing it. I hope that in SumCom FA that they make the AI's a little more challenging and have better physic's, but im sure they will fix that for SumCom FA. This game will be the best RTS game of 2007 for sure.

unless you want to play online with all factions, id stick with FA over supcom. FA is better in EVERY conceivable way! the best RTS of 2007 easily. and vasot thinking UaW will be better than FA? he obviously has no understanding about games or gaming. what a fool! anyone that cant appreciate the innovation shown in supcom/FA clearly lacks much gaming experience.

Will I need to have played Supreme Commander first to be able to play Forged Alliance properly? If it ups the gameplay speed and gives you access to the best units quickly, is it too difficult to drop into this one first??

me 2 @ life4hire what nonsens.............. taking ages to find a game?!?!?!?! create one yourself takes 5 mins to get ppl in and about the resource gathering simulation???? that means you are just playing it wrong ( not a challenge because ofcourse you can beat me... but i feel there's enough combat going on especially in ranked matches) and the comment about losing when someone is slightly ahead in resources???????????? ONE WORD: STRATEGY and for the patching?? never had to reinstall the game once and i'm totally up to date. and the afk comment.... well seems kinda weird gpg and supcom can be held responsibble for ppl leaving their computer when playing you don't you think? ofcourse this all sounds very fanboy like. I like the game but it's not that i live by it. just can't stand ppl saying stuff they can't back up, since the game itself is already proving them wrong. cheers.

I'm definitely looking forward to Forged Alliance. Supreme Commander was a fantastic game on its own, a real RTS that can take half a day to complete a skirmish and has enormous maps with realistically scaled units (much better than my other favorite RTS, Galactic Battlegrounds, where Cruisers and Stormtroopers are roughly the same size with rouhgly the same range). I just really hope they fixed the problems with Windows Vista. I have Vista and the game randomly crashes to the desktop. My friends with XP never have any trouble. Not sure what to think about the increased repair times, but I guess I'll find out what I think next month when I buy it. Ought to run good with DirectX 10. The only DirectX10 game I have right now (Company of Heroes with the expansion) doesn't look any different between DirectX 9 and 10, but the average frame rate is much better on 10.

The thing about repair times is crap afaik Aircraft carriers etc are kinda useful now as well, FA is MUCH quicker paced than Vanilla and if you believe otherwise , well you will change your mind when/if you play it ;).

SupCmdr is awesome. I played TA for years and the multiplayer in this is very stable. This is a RTS with an emphasis on the "S". C&C is like an arcade game, and World in conflict is way too much "auto pilot". I like the idea of making units more expensive and valuable, as it avoids the "build it, and throw units" mode. You send a bunch of bombers, you better take care of the anti-air at the target. Now thats what I want in a RTS. I would like to see some more game optimization for weaker machines. It runs fine on most modern machines, and I think many of the game mags do much to intimidate players. I do find that GPGNet does not have millions of players playing all the time, but GPG is very supportive of their community, and the players are quite active. TA lasted for years after it was published. I am looking forward to getting this game. Those wanting a quick game, can look at the other options out there.

@Life4Hire I find it interesting that you claim to know everything about retail FA already, before it has been released. In fact, when reading through the beta forums, it would appear the ratio between building and fighting you assert is reversed. By greatly reducing the effectiveness of mass fabricators the player is forced to quickly and agressively expand or risk defeat. Experimental units have been decreased in cost and power to make them appear earlier. The gameplay as a whole is faster and smoother. Adding to that, the problems with multiplayer you describe are easily fixed/circumvented. The issue about players quitting or being AFK is solved by making friends and play with them or by trying a ranked game. The problem with people showing up having a 'nil' ping is fixed by opening up the correct ports. I had to do so too and I've never seen 'nil' again. Ever. It's true. The online community is pretty small, but not so small as you say it is and getting into a game has never been much of a problem. I say 'not much' because I'm stuck with a single core processor and I dare not enter a game with more than four players. And while the community may be smallish, it is definately active. I have never seen a company offer as much support to the community as Gas Powered Games, which is quite refreshing. How many games do you know where you get 6 (2x3) free new units in patches so far, in addition to other fixes and performance tweaks? I, for one, am very much looking forward to the release of Forged Alliance. PS. Air Superiority Fighters taking minutes to repair does strike me as a bit odd. Perhaps the previewer ran out of mass?

The Galactic Colossus is already incredibly overpowered, and the Seraphim have one that's even more tough? Guess I'll be playing as Seraphim from now on. Farewell, Cybran Nation!

I hope that my machine can run this - it could the old one - but there were frame rate issues when there were many units on screen. I think I'll lower the graphics with this one - the previous was max on everything.

Alright. In all fairness... I watched a replay on the Forged Alliance beta client. The expansion is definately a huge improvement over the original game, as many have suggested. This one is definately worth checking out for fans and new people. I hope they decide to price it as an expansion, however, because that's what it is despite the improvements / changes and how it's being presented.

All this is good but there is no one online to play against. At any given time there are only 300 people on line in 23 games and there is 1 game available that is password protected. I love this game but have had to decide to not play it or the expansion because it takes a very long time to get a game going and if your opponent gets even a fraction ahead of you with resources YOU WILL LOSE. This game has great potential but all it really should be is a "Resource Gathering Simulator". Im not kidding that you will spend 80% of your time trying to balance your economy and 20% actually controlling units and fighting in the game. This is a bad design as people dont want to try to balance their economy in an RTS... they want to fight. Sadly, if you go online (if you can get it to work) you will see the tiny community. You will spend hours trying to play and find out over the long run like I did that only 1 out of every 10 games get completed. Either someone drops, quits, is AFK or the game just locks up. All the problems in SupCom like NIL pings are still there with Forged Alliance. Crash to desktop for no reason and slow game play are all STILL THERE. I dont see how they will make any money on this game. There are so few people online that I really cant see how more than a few hundred people are going to buy this game. I am sorry for the negative air to my article but I really feel like this game is a waste of time and there are so may other really great games out there right now that dont lock up, that do have a large online base, do run smoothly on the majority of systems and can actually patch their own game without you having to completely reinstall the game to get the latest patch. Pass on this one.

As if the original SupCom wasn't enough of a grind, they have to go and make it even more long and annoying? I was expecting them to SHORTEN the build and repair times, but it seems they are indeed LENGTHENING them! I.... I got no words!! I'm sooooo NOT buying this game. SupCom should learn from C&C3 and it's fast paced non grind gameplay.

I'm really looking forward to those larger polygon counts... Time to buy even more new graphics hardware (for which the drivers will probably perform poorly). Hey guys, we took a game that we just sold you, we upped the graphical detail and did, essentially, what a modder could have done with the gameplay. Sign me up! Where do I preorder?! I love SupCom. I really do. I own it. I play it (badly). It's fantastic. However, from what I've seen so far, this is not a stand-alone product and it should not be billed as such. Expansion priced as sequel FTL

Time to go back to single player for a while again. Hope I don't have to reduce some of the graphics settings since the polygon count has increased. I do hope GPG keeps the system requirements the same as SupCom.
