The film comes after the cancellation of the Swamp Thing streaming series.

Swamp Thing is back, with a new film announced as part of today's massive slew of DC movie announcements. The film will be an origin story for the character, and it will be scarier than many other DC films.

Speaking to Variety, James Gunn said Swamp Thing would be a "horrific" film, with co-CEO Peter Safran also noting the horror elements. The film will see Swamp Thing interacting with other characters from the DC Universe, so it's possible a later ensemble film--with Swamp Thing as a character--could be made, but Gunn said it's "totally outside the rest of the DCU."

The Swamp Thing film follows the DC Universe streaming series from 2019, which was canceled during its first-season run on the ill-fated DC Universe service. DC is undergoing major changes as of late, with director James Gunn co-leading DC Studios after years of mixed critical and commercial success for the company's films.
