Switch 2? Nintendo Has Nothing To Announce But Says Next Console Aims To "Surprise And Delight"

"We're entering uncharted territory with the platform."

The Nintendo Switch is now in its seventh year, and the system continues to put up big-time sales numbers. That being said, people always want to know what's next. Nintendo marketing executive Doug Bowser (real name) told the AP that he has "nothing to announce" about the next Nintendo hardware, but overall the company feels "very bullish" about the current model.

"We're entering uncharted territory with the platform. It's exciting to see that demand is still there," Bowser said.

The Switch has proven to be popular so long into its lifecycle in part because it is a genuinely "unique device" with its ability to be used at home and on the go, Bowser said.

Nintendo will inevitably release another console one day. While we don't know what it'll be just yet, Bowser said the aim for it will be to "surprise and delight" customers.

"How can we introduce new unique ways of playing? That's always in front of our mind," Bowser said.

The Switch has sold 122.5 million units as of December 31, 2022. It is now the third best-selling console of all time. Nintendo just recently released a new Switch bundle to celebrate Mario Day.

There have been ongoing rumors of a new, more powerful Switch console--the Switch Pro--but those reports never materialized into a real product. A next-gen Nintendo console will launch in late 2024, according to one research firm, but this might not be anything beyond pure speculation.

Nintendo's next big game is The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and its release this May will no doubt help spur Switch sales even further. The game itself could be a bigger money-maker, too, thanks to its new, more expensive $70 price point.

Been excited for this for a long time. Once you play switch games upscaled on yuzu, it’s hard to look at native console tv play and not lament about what could have been…

Please don't. You have something good. Stop with the gimmicks. Just give us a more powerful Switch, it's what everyone wants.

Gossip is that the new Switch will be as powerfull as an Series S.

If true,awesome.

I guess they have to continue the mobile/stationary-hybrid- formula.

Make all Switch games backward compatible and i can see me buying the first Nintendo gaming hardware after the WiiU.

Alot of Jrpgs (i like jrpgs) on the Switch which run poorly coz of the current hardware.

Also,MS promised Nintendo to bring CoD to them and mentioned "native" experiences.

My thought is, MS might know about the next Nintendo console coz i doubt CoD in any form can run natively on a current Switch!

It crushes me the next Zelda is running on potato hardware still. Can you imagine running on hardware like PS5 and XSX? Nintendo would have the best looking first party games EVER!

I don't know why they don't pursue better technology instead of these dumb "new ways to play", at this point they have some of the most wanted exclusive IP's. Sony's entire thing are the exclusives that's why it sells double than Xbox, since everything you can play on an Xbox you can play on a PC, but even now they are starting to offer Sony exclusives on PC as well. Meanwhile there's absolutely no other place to play Mario, TLoZ, Smash Bros or Pokemon, yet those games right now have to be so tuned down because the system can't handle anything else. I can only imagine what the latest Pokemon or Zelda game could have been if the switch would've been on par at least with last gen not even gonna say this one.

@Chupert: It's not that hard. They want the hardware to be affordable so as to reach the widest group of people possible, and they don't see the need to push the absolute bleeding edge, given that A) their games aren't pursuing generic photo-realism, and B) they learned with the GameCube that a powerful system isn't going to bring the western 3rd parties back (The Cube was more powerful than the vastly more successful PS2). It also doesn't help that Nintendo is FAR smaller than Sony or Microsoft, and they don't have the cushion to hold on if a bleeding-edge console fails, or has to be sold at a substantial loss. Lastly, the continued popularity of the Switch and its games is enough to tell them that they don't need to waste the money on R&D crafting hardware that doesn't have a mass-market price.

Surprise surprise, all those "leaks" about a new Nintendo console are wrong once again, proving that the people who keep spreading these "leaks" are liars to not be trusted.

At this point I'm more concerned about Nintendo's ability to craft good games. After all, even if the hardware is trash, you can just legally emulate the games. But if the games aren't worth playing to begin with, why bother?

Also even if the console is good, Nintendo needs better online stability if they're going to keep developing full-priced multiplayer games and charging for online play on top of that. No gimmick can fix that.

And finally, stop designing games as DLC milking platforms. A single-player game should have a start, a middle and an end. Let's have some standards here.

As well as Nintendo consoles sell, they would sell even more if they actually made a console that wasn’t a generation behind in hardware. There are tons of holdouts, like myself, who just can’t bring themselves to play games in 720p (or less) at 25-30fps, no matter how good the games are. What would surprise and delight me is if they made something that can hit at least 1080p consistently, at 60fps with HDR support. It doesn’t have to be as powerful as the PS5 or Series X, but it at least needs to not feel underpowered the day it comes out, like the Switch did.

@stickemup: if all you care is resolution and FPS then it is best that you have actually stayed away from Switch.

@stickemup: A generation behind? Try like 3. The switch is nowhere near as powerful as a PS4 or Xbox One, performance wise it's almost the same as the WiiU.

Nintendo need to announce a new platform. They must surely have lost core gamers by this point. I can’t play a game on Switch anymore because they barely work. SMT V was pretty much ruined for me as the console stutters along trying to load it.
