Switch 2 Price Likely To Increase As Nintendo Pulls US Preorders Over Trump's New Tariff Policies

The Switch 2 remains scheduled to release globally on June 5.

Following President Trump unveiling his controversial new tariff plan, Nintendo has announced that it is delaying US preorders. Originally scheduled to start on April 9, a Nintendo representative has since confirmed this date has been pushed back indefinitely in order for the company to "assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions." As such, it is likely we will see an sizeable increase in the console's price before it is relisted.

The full statement, which was given to GameSpot via a Nintendo spokesperson, can be found below:

"Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in the U.S. will not start April 9, 2025 in order to assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions. Nintendo will update timing at a later date. The launch date of June 5, 2025 is unchanged."

Nintendo's latest console has already been the subject of scrutiny--and more than a few jokes--due to its $450 price tag and the cost of its upcoming first-party titles. Following its reveal, Mario Kart World made headlines as Nintendo's priciest game that doesn't include a physical accessory. And yet, it seems like prices will only go up from here.

For months now, experts have speculated that President Trump's proposed tariffs would have significant ramifications for the video game industry. Analyst Daniel Ahmad of Niko Partners stated that Nintendo is likely to "feel the impact" of the tariffs on places like Vietnam and Japan, where many Switch 2 units are produced. MST Financial analyst David Gibson told FT that Nintendo had already shipped more than 350,000 Switch 2 units to the USA back in January in an attempt to get ahead of the tariffs. It was also previously speculated by Piers Harding-Rolls of Ampere Analysis that a Switch 2 "price increase in 2026 might be on the table" if tariffs persist.

Of course some have theorized that these tariffs might encourage Nintendo to produce Switch 2 units in the United States. However, Ahmad pointed out that this would be incredibly unrealistic.

"Nintendo would need to spend billions to open a factory in the US," Ahmad said. "It'd probably take 4-5 years to complete this. Not to mention the time and cost to rebuild supply chain infrastructure and source components (which would be subject to tariffs because they're made outside the US). They'd then need to find, train and pay employees to operate the factory."

During Trump's first presidency, tariffs did not apply to video game consoles because console manufacturers successfully lobbied the government for a special exception. This time, however, it would appear we are seeing the consequences unfold.

I haven't bought a Nintendo console since the Gamecube, and it looks like that won't change any time soon. Haven't been keen on the direction Nintendo have taken in the last 10-15 years. I know I've probably missed out on a number of great games, but still.

Nintendo has been trying to succeed with these prices for years and the fact of the matter is that they will not.

The system is going to flop hard, there is no stimulus check (which is why PS5 succeeded) and there will be no redemption for Nintendo afterwards.

It's all low quality, laggy garbage and this system will probably flop harder than Wii U.

Imagine.

There was a group of people who were complaining about paying too much in taxes and the price of living.

So they put someone in charge who'll give them more taxes and make stuff more expensive. And now they're trying to spin it as an improvement.

$450 for a game console + up to $100 per game w/ taxes(worst part)+ pay for Nintendo Switch online subscription.

Why the hell would you pay 80-100 (including taxes) for a game? I get most of my games off xbox game pass on my PC for $10 a month. I occasionally pay $60 for a ps 5 game, but thats pretty rare. These free games include NG4, Balders gate, Forza, Ninja Gaiden 2 black, Far Cry, Diablo, Halo infinite, Doom The Dark Ages. All my cell phone games are free. Occasionally I will get steam deals for $20 a game.

To play Mario or Zelda for close to $100 with tax when you can get so many games free with Microsoft and Sony game passes(which include God of war and the Last of Us) on PC/ps5/xbox ? Really?

When I was growing up, Nintendo was known to be the cheapest, but now they are by far the most expensive. I would say that the Switch 2 is for rich families in USA/Europe/Japan/South Korea. Disappointed in Nintendo for going from the cheapest gaming option for the poor, to the most expensive for the rich. Its unattainable for poorer families and those in developing nations.

@bcroger3: Nintendo wasn't always the cheapest, cartridges were more expensive to produce compared to PS1 discs and cost more as a result. Here you're also comparing old games being sold digitally to brand new games being produced and sold on physical carts.

If you don't see the value in new games, that's another story, but the truth is that new video games are now $70 + $20 for season pass and 3-day early access.

Nintendo's prices are in line with that, just without the paid DLC on day 1 and FOMO tricks. They also come out polished, so you don't have to wait months for them to patch the game into a functional state.

@AlexF_AT: what are you talking about? No one would sit on inventory for six months for nothing. They could be building inventory since January to make sure they have enough units for a stable launch, but they are definitely not sitting on the full thing since January

Hmmm, a lot of existing Switch owners will be looking at this & thinking 'do I actually need this right now?' Same if a new Steam Deck came out, especially if it's simply viewed as an upgrade, rather than a significant hardware boost.

The problem for Nintendo is just unbelievably bad timing. Even if the tarrifs war wasn't happening, I think the Switch 2 is a hard sell, given the cost & all the other weird stuff they're pricing right now around the product. $80:00 for a game is absolutely nuts. That just doesn't compute with me & even though I have a decent disposable income, it just irks me that I'd have to shell out that kinda money for one game. Not so bad if you can play a demo & make an informed choice based on that but nah, not happening.

Right now, Nintendo is at the bottom of most people list as entertainment is the easiest to do without as it is a want but not a need and has nothing to do with any of the basics needs.

@MigGui: Wasn't there a disclaimer on the announced price saying it could be subject to change. I heard Will Smith say that on the Nextlander podcast, but I didn't watch the Switch 2 Direct, so I don't know. If that's the case though, I assume that disclaimer was in anticipation of new tariffs potentially increasing the price.

@elderlord99: Even if that is true, they still didn't know how much the tariff was gonna be. It could easily be much higher than anticipated, which would justify Nintendos action.

But in any case it is just Nintendo reacting to something caused by President Trump. In my mind there is no doubt that Trump is the problem, but I don't wanna get political.

I think it's also worth mentioning that Nintendo is only doing this for the USA release. Everywhere else, where there are no new tariffs, the preorder, price and release schedule are all unchanged.

@Baconelite: It is true, that was there explanation for the higher price. Tell me was Nintendo reacting to Trumps tarrifs with $90 physical games? Eventhough the development cost of their games are generally far lower? The point is even with Trump's tariff Nintendo would be making a hefty profit but for them that isn't enough because they are the most anti consumer company of any of the console manufacturers.

@Baconelite:

And very much directly hurt your average American customer as well.

Tariffs are a tax. Americans who want to buy things like new gaming consoles from overseas are going to be hit with it in the form of higher prices on things.

@BeefoTheBold: Yeah absolutely. It would be naive to think companies are not going to make their customers pay.

I'd say this is a big win for Microsoft as Xbox might not be impacted by this, but tbh I think Microsoft will just raise the price of their console and games to match whatever the new normal will become.

@bcroger3: BS. Nintendo was not the cheapest. For awhile, they were the only game in town, and they could charge whatever they wanted for consoles and games. If you look as price comparisons with inflation taken into account, they were certainly not the cheapest. History is important to get right, you know.

@bcroger3: Yeah, agreed. It's a hard pill to swallow & it's gonna hurt Nintendo down the road. The hardware itself, doesn't really impress me & the lure of a crucial Nintendo game has long gone. Once again though, the tech looks dated before it's even hit the shelves, so there's nothing to get excited about there either.

I'm just going to leave this here as yet another illustration of just how absurdly stupid these tariffs are.

By the numbers, the tariffs are less an expression of economic theory and more a Dadaist art piece about the meaninglessness of expertise. The Trump administration slapped 10 percent tariffs on Heard Island and McDonalds Islands, which are uninhabited, and on the British Indian Ocean Territory, whose residents are mostly American and British military service members.

One of the highest tariff rates, 50 percent, was imposed on the African nation of Lesotho, whose average citizen earns less than $5 a day. Why? Because the administration’s formula for supposedly “reciprocal” tariff rates apparently has nothing to do with tariffs. The Trump team seems to have calculated each penalty by dividing the U.S. trade deficit with a given country by how much the U.S. imports from it and then doing a rough adjustment. Because Lesotho’s citizens are too poor to afford most U.S. exports, while the U.S. imports $237 million in diamonds and other goods from the small landlocked nation, we have reserved close to our highest-possible tariff rate for one of the world’s poorest countries.

The notion that taxing Lesotho gemstones is necessary for the U.S. to add steel jobs in Ohio is so absurd that I briefly lost consciousness in the middle of writing this sentence.

-Derek Thompson, the Atlantic

@dushness: they'd need to take a loss on consoles and make it up on games, which would mean games would go up anyway to compensate. Nintendo won't take the 40% markup on the chin, it's not how businesses work

@Slannmage: exactly this. Guaranteed the console costs nowhere near the $450 that it was listed for anyway. I'd be willing to bet that all costs included the thing probably costs $350 at best to make and distribute. Companies just getting ever more greed all in the endless pursuit of profit number must be more than last year. Which I've been saying for years is simply not sustainable in the long term.

If every company must beat last year's profits or shareholders cry and panic and there is only a finite amount of money yet companies want infinite money it's not going to work for very long before a crash happens. Gaming industry has been on the tip of a crash since post covid and in all honesty kinda needs one at this point to give it a reset.
