Switch 2 Price Remains In Limbo As New Tariffs Reduced And Paused, With One Major Exception

Tariffs are being lowered, with a 90-day pause that takes us beyond the Switch 2 launch date.

31 Comments

In the wake of a crumbling global market, US President Donald Trump announced today that he is scaling back his original tariff plan, lowering tariffs significantly basically everywhere except China. It remains to be seen what this means for the Switch 2, which was supposed to begin US preorders today.

Trump said on Wednesday that tariffs in most places will be lowered to 10%, but China is facing an increased 125% tariff rate. Both rate changes take effect immediately. Overall, Trump said he is initiating a 90-day pause to new tariff deals. Ninety days from today is July 8, 2025.

Everyone wants to know what this means for the Switch 2, and we don't know. According to FT, after the first Trump presidency, Nintendo shifted some manufacturing to Vietnam and Cambodia in response to Trump's position on trade with China.

The report said 50% of the Switch 2 production has come out of Vietnam and Cambodia in recent months. The tariff rate for these countries as of last week was 46% and 49%, respectively, but now it's 10%, effectively immediately. In theory, this would seemingly help Nintendo keep the Switch 2 price at $450 or close to it, but no one knows for sure, and Nintendo is yet to comment.

The Switch 2 launches on June 5, which is more than a month before the 90-day pause would end. Experts believe negotiations will take place between now and the deadline to solidify new trade agreements.

Niko Partners analyst Daniel Ahmad said he expects Nintendo to take advantage of this situation and ship even more Switch consoles to the US. This doesn't rule out a price increase in the future, or potential supply problems, Ahmad said. Even before all of the trade tariffs, Nintendo shipped Switch 2 units to the United States, and they are currently in warehouses in America.

GameSpot has reached out to Nintendo in an attempt to get more details on the situation as it relates to the Switch 2.

Wanna fight scalpers? Don’t use scalpers! Crazy idea right? Anybody who uses scalpers deserve what they get!!! People were paying ridiculous money for ps5’s at launch even when 95% of games were being released on ps4 at the time lol so I have no pity for greedy people

Sure, the whole "plan" was a colossal disaster, erased trillions in value, punched the average worker's finances directly in the gut, but, consider this: as "liberation day" was paused for the umptillionth time, he and all his buddies likely got to make billions through insider trading. So really, was it all that bad?

"In the wake of a crumbling global market"

Bull. That orange sundowning buffoon doesn't give a shit about a crumbling world, the only thing he cares about is his ass being on the line. He's worried about a flood of capital g Gamers turning against him, because he knows we're crazy.

@hellhammer:

My dude...this is Freshman year economics level stuff we're discussing here.

Freshman year in HIGH SCHOOL level economics.

Every economist from the conservative to the liberal side of the spectrum has the same answer on these tariffs.

And the markets spoke pretty loudly and clearly. This was just a colossal self own.

If it was such a good idea in the first place, then why didn't he and his cronies stick with the plan--oh wait

The Tariffs are a complete waste of time. Obviously the greedy corpos aren't about to abandon their sweat shops overseas when they can just increase domestic prices to compensate for the losses, knowing full well that American citizens have no alternative, and lobby twice as hard for the next four years until the next President will wipe the slate clean, thus causing the American consumer to suffer for no reason whatsoever. The economy will remain trash, the only domestic jobs will remain minimum wage entry level positions, and the corpos will continue to exploit the unprotected citizens of foreign nations with terrible governments.

Trump just saved America from a recession, rescuing a tumbling stock market to where it sees the biggest rally in 5 years. My god, what a brilliant man. Thank you Trump!

@maralzo: I hope that’s sarcasm. Him and his elite buddies are about to cash in. Gain more than they lost by manipulating the market. Fellow peasant Americans are the real losers and still support him. He just handed them a bowl of dung and eating it up!

@maralzo: Tell me, how does that Trump Kool-Aid taste? All of this is based on Trump's misinformed trade war. Just because he pulls us back from the brink of his own mess, doesn't mean he's brilliant. He's the opposite.

Unless you need a sarcasm font for that.

@maralzo:

This is like an arsonist setting fire to your house, then putting that same fire out, and wanting a medal for it.

The reason the stock market was crashing to begin with were the tariffs. He caused the crash. The rally happened when he backed down.

All he did was put out a fire of his own making.

If there's anything we know about the economy, it's that it loves randomness and unpredictability. : p

@mogan: There's nothing random or unpredictable about this. This ALWAYS happens to the economy when some idiot decides tariffs are a good idea. They get announced. Countries respond in kind. The idiot who started it eventually backs down and inevitably tries to convince everyone that was always the plan to try and save face. This is exactly what was always going to happen.

@Seymour47: And then he decides to delay them, and change the amounts, and some countries get different delays, and some countries don't get any. It's really like stock market fuel, let me tell you. : p

@mogan:

Precisely. It is impossible for businesses to make long term plans when the mango menace could wake up tomorrow, have a bad bowel movement, and again decide to, I dunno, start talking about annexing Canada.

Corporations are going to be hesitant to make long term investments when there is so much volatility and unpredictability caused by Trump's destructive antics.

Hard to say since the orange buffoon is so unpredictable. However one negative outcome is that this could create artificial demand with everyone scrambling to get a pre-order in especially if Nintendo limits the pre-order allowances (if & when they do go live).
