Switch 2 Release Month And More Accessories Apparently Revealed

Nintendo has not announced the Switch 2 yet, but an accessory company is already hyping the console.

In the absence of any official news about the Switch 2, rumors and reports about it are popping up all over the place, including at the Consumer Electronics Show this week in Las Vegas. The latest rumor stems from peripheral company Genki, which is showing off accessories for the Switch 2 at CES and even reportedly telling one journalist that the system will launch in April.

Accessory manufacturers like Genki might get advance notice of upcoming hardware announcements, but there is no indication here that it's the case. Genki is also displaying what it claims to be a genuine replica of the Switch 2. The company apparently created a mock-up of the Switch 2 as a stand-in to show how Genki's accessories, including a docking station and case, will work for it.

The report from Numerama (via VGC) also states that the Switch 2's new Joy-Cons have an optical sensor and a "C" button, the purpose of which is unknown. Again, all of this information should be taken with a grain of salt.

Genki also has a website set up for "NS2 Accessories." The page states: "The Next Evolution in Gaming is Coming… We're working on something extraordinary for the next handheld."

In a follow-up from IGN, a Genki representative expressed surprise at the attention, saying they thought anything they were sharing had already leaked. That said, Genki reiterated that it can't speak to the internals of the device, only the physical body and features like the magnetic Joy-Con controllers. The representative also confirmed the presence of an extra USB port at the top of the Switch 2. IGN did its own measurements of the mock-up device, finding it to be no more than an inch larger than the original Switch in any direction: 10.5" instead of 9.5" width, 4.5" instead of 4" height, and an 8" screen instead of a 7" screen. The thickness of the new Switch appears unchanged, if the Genki mock-up is accurate.

Recently, a report emerged claiming that Nintendo's upcoming system will in fact be called Switch 2. Apparently the hybrid system will utilize magnetic Joy-Cons as well, which was previously rumored for the console. It's unknown specifically when Nintendo will officially unveil the Switch successor, though it will be before the end of March.

Switch became the second-best-selling system in US history recently with 46.6 million units sold in the region. However, Nintendo DS still holds the top spot.

It's crazy how when the original switch was teased, everyone was making fun of the trailer.

Now, people see some 3rd party hand grip or battery back for the second system. It's a whole ass article.

See, folks that's what happens when you think like Nintendo. Which is, "FUN & Art >>> Graphics".

Ultimately when it comes to Nintendo third party doesn't matter, I just want good first party and they've been fumbling on it for years now. So they could keep with the Switch and not release a Switch 2, they just need a better first party. You could give Pokemon to any other developer than they'd do a 1000 percent better job than Gamefreak.

I wish Nintendo would just release a Super Nintendo Switch 2 as Powerful as the Series X at this this point. I think that would move units as fast as anything, I love Mario games but I do want the games in full 4K and Raytracing at this point.

@ceelogreen94: Just isn't going to happen is it, you cannot even do that from the PC vendors in that form factor.

@Slannmage: If Nintendo would allow the Dock to be enhance enough it could happen. In handheld form it will never happen, but the dock can change that.

Honestly? It's hard to get excited about the Switch 2 right now. It basically just looks like a nice Switch upgrade & that's just not enough for me to get on board, especially with other handhelds that probably trounce it in the hardware & software department. Are the meager new releases enough to justify a purchase? Maybe years ago but not anymore. I'm just not desperate enough to cough up the cash to play a few decent titles. There's far too much awesome software out there available on the other handhelds to fulfill all my gaming needs.

This will possibly be an impulse buy for most people because y'know, it's Nintendo but I'm not feeling it atm.

@ecurl143: I agree 1000%. Even with the Switch, I waited months before buying it, when titles came out, I really wanted to play, I needed to wait till there was a few titles at least.

A Nintendo system is nothing to get excited about anymore. The Switch showed its weakness in playing higher end games (BOTW dropping to the teens in FPS at times), and as they will be trying to hit a price point (to be cheaper than the others), they will have weak hardware again.

It's not like when the SNES came out, or even the N64, those days of excitement for a Nintendo system is gone...

I will be watching but, in no way buying right away, unless it's a gift...

@DavidinCT: I think the challenge for Nintendo will be balancing its unique identity with the demands of current-gen gaming. While the Switch remains immensely popular, the growing competition from powerful consoles and gaming PCs means that Nintendo needs to strike a good balance between portability, performance and innovation in the Switch 2.

From what's been circulating, news-wise, I just don't see a whole lot to get excited about but we'll see.

From my own personal perspective, my Steam Deck has been my go to handheld for the last 3 years or so. Literally all my gaming is done on that thing flawlessly, with visuals & performance to match. It's going to take something monumentally awesome to pull me away from that.

@ecurl143: Trust me, I have a SteamDeck as well... It blows away the Switch in every way, even plays Switch games.....

I would grab my deck before even looking at my Switch....Infact I have not touched my Switch for months now but, played the newest Switch game on my SteamDeck (hint, it runs better).

The Switch 2, or whatever it is called will be a wait and see. If it's really good, budget priced and has a handful of titles I must play, maybe I will grab it on release but, otherwise, 6-8 months out before I grab one...

@ecurl143: I feel exactly the same as you, my steam deck has been my go to console for almost three years now (I own the LCD and the OLED), just been able to customize and the freedom to play between my gaming pc to a portable device is such an amazing experience. The only thing that will pull me is just Nintendo games at this point.

@siul129: Same. I have a first generation LCD Steam Deck & that thing just eats up anything that's thrown at it. Steam OS & support is rock solid & the games library via Steam is insane. I mainly buy all my software when it's on sale, or in bundles, so my entire library is dirt cheap. Can't remember the last time I shelled out £60:00+ for any game. I just refuse to do that. I'm not that desperate gamer who has to have day 1 purchases. I've never EVER pre-ordered & that mentality has stuck with me since forever.

A Switch 2 purchase looks to be a very remote possibility for me, as it stands but the fanfare should be interesting to see unfold.

I want a new 3D Zelda that has nothing to do with BotW, I want a fully next gen Pokemon game that isn't made by the terrible Gamefreak that has just recycled the same game for 25 years. I also want a new 3D Mario as it has been several years and the last one wasn't very good, I still play Galaxy over it. However I also want something new and mind blowing as Nintendo haven't done that for me since Wii Sports.

My problem with Nintendo's first party really, they did some amazing things on the Wii U and the Switch just really felt like they were porting that over. I really couldn't care less about all their B games and games made by external studios like Hyrule Warriors or whatever :S Any other company that would be a 4/10 game, but people go mad cause it has Nintendo on it.

However I feel now Miyamoto is old and probably not even working on games now, that the company will go down the drain.

@Slannmage: Yeah, Miyamoto works on movies now. His last full-on proper producer role was on the first Mario Galaxy, 18 years ago. After that, he became more of a supervisor overseeing several projects at Nintendo and informing upper management of their status.

I want to be optimistic, but I generally agree with your sentiment. I worry that the old Nintendo talent and philosophy will wither as the old blood leaves. There is certainly talent in this world that could carry Nintendo's legacy, but we don't know if that talent is being hired by Nintendo or if they're going to outsource to cheap labor to maximize profits, and rely on brand name alone until everyone notices they're being fed slop and no one cares anymore. I really hope these worries will be cleared up whenever they show new Switch 2 games, but right now the future is uncertain.

Change like that is inevitable as we grow older, but even something like Charles Martinet not being Mario anymore certainly made that series feel a little bit like a zombie that has to keep on going postmortem. It makes you realize that it's new people working on old franchises instead of making new ones, which feels a bit like a bummer. Those old games were good because they came directly from the heart and soul of their creators, but that's harder to replicate when you work on a game series that isn't yours. Few people can do it.

@batman90: Switch 2 has a (rumored) massive processor increase as well as 16 GB RAM. The Switch 1 sits at just 4 GB with a vastly older processor.

Like Switch or not, the second outing is a clear upgrade.

Why would it be a waste ? That's like saying it's a waste for SONY to release another playstation.

Do you hear yourself ?

I don't quite believe it yet because of the orange. Looks too similar to Portal colors.

@epitaph: I think we were both kinda wrong, it does look pretty orange after all. But it's a pretty specific color between red and orange, so it can come out looking more orange than it is through certain video codecs, so you were right about that.

I can’t tell for sure, but the RT and LT look like buttons and not analog triggers again. If so then my biggest complaint about the first Switch carries over to the new one. I’m a huge fan of racing games, and not having incremental control of gas and brakes means an entire genre, one of my favorites, won’t be something I’d want to play on that system.

@thebadjesus: will have to wait and see but that’s a fair point. Any game with vehicles would be impacted by that, not just racing-specific
