Switch Has Outsold The Wii, Making It Nintendo's Best-Selling Home Console Ever

With over 103 million sales since 2017, the Switch continues to be one of Nintendo's best-performing consoles of all time.

The Nintendo Switch has now sold over 103.54 million consoles worldwide--up by 10 million since September--beating the 101.6 million sales benchmark of the Wii.

While the Switch's impressive sales don't make it Nintendo's best-selling hardware ever--the Nintendo DS family of handheld family consoles shifted over 154 million units during its lengthy lifecycle--the hybrid nature of the Switch does make it Nintendo's most successful home console ever made.

That total is made even more impressive when you factor in the lifetime sales of its predecessor--the Wii U--which only managed to sell 13.5 million units during its short run in the early 2010s. According to Nintendo, 18.95 million Switch consoles were sold during the first nine months of its last fiscal year, with sales being down by 21.4% when compared to the previous year.

While Nintendo blamed this dip on the ongoing global semiconductor shortage and the Animal Crossing: New Horizons boom subsiding, it still expects to ship 23 million Switch consoles before the end of March.

"Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch Lite also sustained sales momentum following the launch of Nintendo Switch OLED Model, and all three models sold well while maintaining a good sales balance," Nintendo said in its February 2022 financial results for the nine months ended December 31, 2021. "Last fiscal year, the March 2020 release of Animal Crossing: New Horizons was a major driver of hardware sales, so compared to the same period of last year, the unit sales declined for hardware resulting in 18.95 million units (a decrease of 21.4% year-on-year)."

As for which Switch console did best, that honor goes to the original model, which sold 81.68 million units by the end of 2021. The Switch Lite model took second place with 17.87 million sales, while the new Switch OLED Model has sold over 3.99 million units since its launch.

Elsewhere in the gaming industry, Microsoft and Sony have also had a great 2021. Xbox had its biggest year of all time, while PlayStation's Game & Network Services division generated $24.87 billion in revenue, up 8.9% year-over-year.

In its own earnings report, Sony revealed that it had sold another 3.9 million PS5 units for the latest quarter, pushing the system's lifetime numbers to 17.3 million as of December 31, 2021.

Not really a "home" console though... I'm pretty sure most bought it more as an handheld in mind. That was my case at least

The Switch is so good. The Wii nearly killed my interest in Nintendo, so i went years and years without buying their stuff. The Switch rekindled my interest in their games, I haven't owned this many games for a console since the gamecube

I remember a ton of 'hard-core' gamers predicting the Switch was going to flop due to being underpowered, gimmicky, and lacking in 3rd party support for current gen games.

Despite those criticisms being true, Nintendo consolidated both their Home and Hand-held consoles and created one of the best selling consoles of all time. No matter what kind of console you consider the Switch to be, this is still very impressive.

It sold because it's the only handheld.

It hasn't outsold the DS, which is its actual competition for comparison here.

@Thanatos2k: And to think, the PSP also sold like 80 million. A lot of handhelds were sold that generation.

I am honestly not surprised tbh. I mean, the pattern has been the same for longer than I've been alive. They're like that weird but fun kid at school: One day, they show up with something odd but fun af and before you know it everyone wants one. They do great for awhile and then get cocky and try to mimic the "cool kids". Not surprisingly, this doesn't go well and they get their brains beaten in and then slink off for a few years before showing up at school with something odd but fun af that before you know it, everyone wants...

No offense to the Late, Great Iawata (RIP) but even he couldn't quite avoid the cycle so, I am kind of hoping that Furukawa will be able to avoid the "cocky phase" and finally, at long last Nintendo just sticks with odd but fun af the whole time.

I have said it before and I'll keep saying it over and over again: gaming as a whole needs their unique voice and outlook to help keep everyone on their toes enough to force even a modicum of creativity on the other AAAs, otherwise it would be nothing but safe-but-boring the whole way.

It's honestly no different than the stagnation phases we see in the movie industry all the time: where everything looks pretty much like everything else for a few years before the industry finds another bandwagon to jump on and then it's nothing but that for another few years... rinse and repeat... rinse and repeat... rinse and repeat...

Just by being around though, whether they're winning or bombing big time, Nintendo can (and frequently does) indeed shake up that cycle- probably far more frequently than any of us give them credit for. So, yeah: we want them to stay "weird but fun" and not trying to hop onto this or that bandwagon just because the other two are. And, luckily, the "weird but fun" is what works for them so, I think they're right: there's no need for them to be concerned about the other guys eating up other companies rn.

They're the only "weird but fun" in town after all so, they're going to stay just fine as long as they do keep letting that weird-but-fun flag fly. :D

Whoa!

That's quite the accomplishment. Good for Nintendo.

@Pyrosa: Wait, doesn't that also make it the highest-selling home console ever?

Of course, it was destined to outsell the Wii. Wii U with the pad was expanded on as Nintendo saw potential in making a console that one can play on the TV and also play on the go. It was destined to replace the 3DS too.

No surprise. Nintendo handhelds have always sold well. I've always preferred the handhelds, the games were so much better.
