Tabula Rasa: Hands-On, 12 Hours In

We've been playing the closed beta of Tabula Rasa for a while, and having reached the 12-hours-played mark, it's time to report back.

After many years in development hell, Richard Garriott's Tabula Rasa is finally approaching its release date. With the game currently available in a closed beta, we've been spending time learning the ropes and exploring a number of the game's alien zones. The 12-hour journey took us to all corners of the first zone of the Concordia continent, the imaginatively named Wilderness, and off into the next zone, Divide.

Throughout the first 12 hours we have gone up 11 levels and completed a wide range of quests, ranging from the ethically dubious, such as running drugs--we elected not to turn the dealer over to his base commander, as we really needed the money--to the bog-standard MMO fare of collecting a batch of boar tusks. Also during this time (we've been playing the beta over the course of a few weeks), the game has undergone a series of improvements related to player feedback, so expect the game to change a lot more between now and release.

After completing the in-game tutorial you are whisked by dropship to a forward base that is bustling with activity and attached to a friendly alien complex. Here you get your first simple quests and head out into the wilderness, armed with nothing but a rifle and the ability to throw lightning gained in the tutorial. The fundamental mechanic will be familiar to anyone who has played an MMORPG. You go out into the wilderness, kill things, and therefore gain experience, money (credits), and items.

Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more.
Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more.

The combat system is incredibly simple and will be a relief to anyone scared by the massed action bars and cluttered interfaces that games such as World of Warcraft can present you with. In fact, it feels much more like that of a first-person shooter than an RPG. Pressing numbers one to five changes your selected weapon, six to 10 your selected ability--and you can reorder them by simply dragging and dropping, either within the selection tray or your inventory.

Attacking enemies is then just a mouse click away: left for your weapon, right for ability. Hover your cursor over an enemy to acquire them and an information bar pops up displaying their health, shield levels, and other useful information; either fire manually or press tab to lock on, then open fire with either your weapons or an offensive ability. The target information window also includes a precise range indicator which incorporates graphical representation of the optimum range for your selected weapon.

There is an impressive and somewhat confusing array of weapons and weapon classes that present themselves to you fairly quickly, and soon it becomes something of a challenge sorting out which five you wish to have easy access to. We generally opted for a pair of shotguns to deal with massed enemies--one of which took out shields and damaged robotic attackers, the other of which caused conventional damage--and a pair of chainguns for more heavily armoured single targets, with the final slot being taken up by a long-range rifle.

Economy is also something that comes into play--it's possible to mow down all comers with your shiny new laser chaingun, and then find yourself completely broke and unable to buy more ammo without first switching to a slightly lower-maintenance weapon for a spot of more profitable killing and questing. As your character progresses, you get to use a wider range of weapons that vary by class. Higher-level weapons such as rocket launchers, polarity weapons, and netguns can all find their way into your arsenal later on.

The secondary skills follow a similar pattern. All characters have both the ability to sprint and a long-range lightning attack, but you gather more as you specialise and level up. Our main character is a soldier class--we will look at the specialist in more detail in a later preview--and so also has an area-of-effect ability called shrapnel to call upon. The secondary ability tray is also where you can keep items useful in the heat of battle, such as grenades and medical kits, so once again you need to think carefully about what to place in there before you head into action.

Combining heavy weapons and Logos abilities can have a devastating effect.
Combining heavy weapons and Logos abilities can have a devastating effect.

These secondary abilities are enabled through the collection of Logos powers, and form the game's one obvious nod to the world of fantasy and spellcasting. Logos elements have a vast lore of their own and are core to the higher-level game and spread throughout the world--both in group-requiring instanced areas and hard-to-reach areas of the world at large. While we haven't yet seen much of the power promised by the Logos abilities, they are one of the things that we're most looking forward to investigating as we level up.

Over the first 12 hours the game seems grind-free. We got comfortably to level 11 going from quest to quest across the zone, and left many undone in the initial zone before moving onto the next. Also, the quests send you from hub to hub, so you are very rarely left with no choices or nothing to do. The sheer volume of quests on offer means that it's possible to avoid quest types you don't like without resorting to grinding, and it's also possible to play through, at least initially, without being forced into teaming up with other people to progress.

We were also impressed with how alive the world feels. Dynamic NPC battles, the relentless Bane assault some areas suffer, and the much-vaunted ability to lose control of your bases lend the game a very different to feel to many recent MMOs.

Tabula Rasa is set to launch this fall, so expect to see more coverage of the higher-level content, class specialisations, and customisation options between now and the game's currently predicted fourth-quarter release.

I can not put the game down. I have played just about every mmo you can name and then some since the early 80's. this is one of the best if not The Best ever. I was so anticipating Planetsides release just to be horribly dissapointed. Tabula Rasa is lightyears better and also has the best features of other top rated mmorpg's uch as wow lotro, etc. I only mention Planetside because of the futuristic feel and again I Stress Tabula is a score of 10 compared to Planetsides score of 1 (and thats being generous. If you like mmorpg's and FPS this is a very satisfying game.

It'll be interesting to see how this Richard Garriott title fares in the world of next-gen MMO's, especially next to powerhouse WoW. Loved UO for the short time I played it and of course all the early Ultima games (Serpent Isle, Black Gate especially) were a blast. Might be a bit patchy when it first comes out, but I have high hopes for Garriott and the TR team. Hopefully they'll deliver a great online experience.

hoping it will be better than wow, would like a wide range of character customizatons and rare stuff, so when people walk pass you, they will stop and look at you and saw where you got it from I like Sci-Fi, WoWs fun... but too time consuming, i don't want to bloody spend 3 hrs finding a sword that drops off a dwaf... this game looks promising

Kinda pity you have to download 3 gb for the patches when you want to enter the beta, after you bought a 5 euro cd but anyway, I'm looking forward to the real thing. I'm a preWoW just dying or a new MMORPG and atm this is the best alternative I think.

Wow. This game kicks WoWs ass! It's faster paced, less tedious, grind-free, allows for different paths of quests based on ethical choices, and its not even finished yet! Oh, and I don't want anyone to start rattling off their system specs, but the graphics are great as long as your computer can handle them...

Currently playing the Beta....so far not overly impressed.....Graphics are disappointing....character movement is very awkward..... but that's what Betas are for. I look forward to this game after it gets tweaked and polished.

"Over the first 12 hours the game seems grind-free". Well, that sounds encouraging to me. That is my biggest gripe with MMO's. I also have some faith in Garriott, so I am definitely gonna give this one a try.

I know _WAY_ more about Richard Garriott than most, believe me. Played many of the Ultimas, and was actively involved with the Seer community in UO. I no longer even _PLAY_ WoW. My point was not to compare TR to WoW, but rather to just LAUGH at people reviewing such BASIC and "present in all MMO" features (just like Coldness pointed out) as though they were these brand new things that nobody's ever heard of before. Each PARAGRAPH of the review could've been swapped out for a single sentence like: - They've got quests. - There's magic. - There are higher level weapons. But again: the biggest irony of all is that Garriott did an INTERVIEW with Gamespot (perhaps just reported by it), basically ranking on the MMO industry for not innovating and that ALL games are basically UO or EQ with better graphics. INCLUDING his OWN GAME!!

You obviously know nothing about Richard Garriot, Admiral Jedi. He was pretty much the founder of the whole ethical dilemma branching storyline concept, and stands for a number of things lacking in wow: immersion and engagement with your character. Hope to see this in Tabula Rasa

It's a cool game, with this new battle system that I definitly ADORE! but the animation seems a bit awkward, but I hope they'll fix that by the time the games goes puplic... AdmiralJedi....you're not making sense! cuz every MMORPG out there is like the other,NO DIFFERENCE WHATSOEVER!! maybe the setting and the name of the quests, but that's it! this game presents this new battle system that I don't recall seeing in anyother game! and if you like WOW so much, plz don't critsize other games for it!!

Are you people for REAL!? There is absolutely _NOTHING_ new about this game. NOTHING. Especially ironic from a guy who just a few weeks ago ragged on the industry for "not innovating." - no grind levelling -> WoW - quests (gee whiz Wally) -> WoW - "ethically challenging quests that preclude you from other quests" (aka factions) -> [every other game in the world] - The LOGOS!!! (aka sci-fi MAGIC) -> gee whiz I wish this industry would stop sending Richard Garriott their love letters and realize he's done: NOTHING!

Good: -Nice change of environments from WoW, Everquest, etc. -Constant npc war going on and loseable bases is very fun. -Checkpoints and teleporters rule! Walking & Travel time greatly reduced. No more stupid griffon/wyvern rides. Bad: -It doesn't pop at cha but hopefully after it's polished and out of beta. -Whole lotta bang bang just to kill a simple mob. It feels like i could shoot a monster all day but one Level2 lightning bolt and BAM! he's down. I'm really not sure why there are guns in it. Once in about ten shots you'll get a crit that does dome damage but usually it's minimal. I don't get this part myself because lightning you learn early on and even later it seems it's still does litterally about 10x the damage as a weapon; and I don't have to buy ammo for lighting ability. -It's kind of hard to read the missions and chat. (need polish & a big monitor) -hard to figure out the chat channels and grouping. Hard to find a group.

MrGrimFandango: You're wrong about not being able to dodge attacks. The devs have clearly stated that cover does work to mitigate damage. If you take cover behind a rock or wall, that cover will be added as a modifier to the d20 roll of your enemy's attack. I would assume the same is true of of mobs if they happen to run around a corner or behind a rock, but I'm not sure if the ai would actually do that. And keep in mind that this is not a full FPS, it's an MMO, so there is no area-specific aiming. As with any RPG, you're shots will hit if you roll a hit, and won't if you don't. It's not about precision aiming, and I personally don't think it should be. This is even true in new games like Hellgate:London and Huxley, which are even more FPS-like.

Looking good, as for the comment on "lock on" have you ever played an RPG ever??? Seriously, it will merely be a camera tool that keeps the screen looking at an enemy. You could lock on in KOTOR but hit ratio, defence, armour and dodge are all calculated on a d20 dice roll the camera lock on is simply to avoid difficult camera angles that impede the natural flow of the game. I wouldn't worry too much about it. As for content it seems to be an interesting IP that is worth following, but then again I'm waiting for the stargate mmo.

MrGrimFandango>Im pretty sure with the dice rolls you won't always hit, so i think the lock-on is so you can strafe and stuff while keeping your target in view At least it sounds different from the kajillion other mmos that have just begun launching, I'll be lookin into this one.

Here is the problem with TR, first, its a shooter and its combat system is ANTI shooter, it takes away the VERY fundamentals of a shooter of its kind. Granted I only saw it for about 15 minutes so take with a grain of salt. 1. You lock on to a target and your bullets will always hit on ice rolls and vice verse, like traditional MMO's....WHICH IS INSANITY for a shooter. This leads to bad number 2. 2. You cant dodge bullets and monsters dont either, whats the point? Most of the time in a shooter (not tactical) your survival depends on dodging the other guy but this game locks on so you can basically have to just sit there and shoot.

I've been playing it for a while and only stopped playing after they nerfed the class that I was playing. I haven't even tried to log back in since then. I'll have to check it out and see if they have fixed that yet. The game is just another MMO as far as I can see. Yes the combat is a bit easier but the basic MMO formula is still the same.

Its going to be an amazing and much needed addition to the slew of MMOs that usually feature the same high-fantasy genre. Choice is always good. Its a no-brainer. And its combat system is refreshing too! That said, i can never understand nor sympathise with those whining about the monthly payment. 12 dollars a MONTH? get a freaking job guys, i spend way more on outings on weekends and I **** bet you guys do too. Plus opinions based on previews? Well no **** guys, how do you get an informed opinion on something that isnt out yet and with no full details? Sure, have your opinion and voice it out but it will only sound extremely retarded to almost everyone else. Your choice.

From what I've read of beta tester comments, essentially there is no reason to pay $10/month or whatever to play this game. For crying-out-loud, you're paying for an MMORPG - yet you detest the online, social aspects of it! "Thank gad you don't have to find other people to play with!" Perhaps you missed the entire purpose of the genre? The fact is, the pay-to-play MMORPG market is saturated enough - titles with no monthly fees, such as Guild Wars 2 and Too Human make more sense in this day and age, I can't see people wanting to pay for yet another MMORPG - you don't win over WoW people by saying "you could pay another monthly subscription!"

this looks amazing for an MMORPG. honestly, i've gotten really tired of the same crap in every single MMORPG. level, level, quest, level, buy new items, quest, level. plus all there really is in the other MMORPGs is swords and spells. In this game theres guns, spells, and i bet swords. i mean sure, WoW has guns but it only fires once every few seconds where as here theres all sorts of different fire rates and gun types. this game might actually be worth 50 + 12 every month. Im hoping that they have PvP servers like WoW though cause that'd be sweet as hell. And to any Gamespot staff or anyone who has the beta, please put some more videos up with a raid or dungeon run, or something that involves a lot of gameplay and people. Youtube, gametrailers, anywhere. thx for the preview!

Is this what our society has come to? Z1, please...for all of us as well as the fate of whatever world some androgenous male in a random FF game...stop using leetspeak and pick up a book.
