Take Two: "Our Competitors Burn Off Their Franchises" by Annualizing Them

"One of the things that's best about Take-Two is our franchises seem to be permanent."

Addressing a crowd of investors today at an MKM Partners event, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick again spoke about why his company generally does not annualize its franchises like its competitors do.

Putting out new Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead games every year might sound like a good idea on paper, but Zelnick said it would prove very costly and could lead to a drop in quality.

No Caption Provided

"I suppose, conceptually, if we took all [of our franchises] and we just turned it into an annualized schedule--leaving everything else to the side--the math says you would be in a better place," the executive explained. "But what would it imply? It would imply doubling our development teams. It would imply calling into question our quality. And it would imply the risk that consumers tire of these franchises. One of the things that's best about Take-Two is our franchises seem to be permanent. They're beloved and permanent. Whereas our competitors burn off their franchises, which means they have to create new ones, which is incredibly difficult to do."

Zelnick pointed out that Take-Two, spanning Rockstar Games and 2K Games labels, has eleven franchises where an individual release has sold over 5 million copies. Additionally, Take-Two has released 54 games that have sold at least two million copies. "That's second to none in the business," Zelnick said.

Take-Two's goal is to eventually get to a point where it has enough franchises to release different ones every year to give other ones room to breathe in between releases. "We can have a really powerful release schedule without burning off the IP and that's our goal," he said.

This has been Take-Two's objective ever since it took over control of the company in 2007, Zelnick said, adding that at the time, Take-Two was far too dependent on the GTA franchise.

Some of Take-Two's biggest franchises include GTA, Red Dead, NBA 2K, WWE 2K, Civilization, BioShock, and Borderlands.

In November 2015, Zelnick echoed similar sentiments when he said annualization can lead to the erosion in the value of a brand.

"The market asks us, 'Why don't you annualize your titles?' We think with the non-sports titles, we are better served to create anticipation and demand," he said at the time. "On the one hand to rest the title and on the other hand to have the highest quality in the market, which takes time. You can't do that annually."

Take-Two does annualize some of its franchises, but only its sports games like NBA 2K and WWE 2K.

Also during his talk today, Zelnick said Take-Two is not against growing its company inorganically via M&A--mergers and acquisitions. However, he stressed that Take-Two is taking a disciplined approach and won't buy another company unless the move is accretive to Take-Two's overall outlook.

In making his point, Zelnick claimed that Electronic Arts, under the leadership of former CEO John Riccitiello, burned $20 billion in market cap through its various acquisitions over the past decade. Riccitiello was replaced by Andrew Wilson, who has since earned it all back, Zelnick said (EA's stock hit an all-time high last year). "Andrew has done a great job" leading EA, the executive explained.

"Most corporate M&A fails. Most corporate M&A is driven by ego and empire-building and a complete lack of awareness about simple mathematics," he said. "I don't think our competitions even know what the word accretion means."

Also during the event today, Zelnick teased that Red Dead Redemption 2 will offer a "big, sprawling, optimistic view of America."

"They" won't even bother to create new ones or visit older ones with potential. Thanks to purchasing Vivendi, Activision has Metal Arms and Prototype, and Singularity was original of them, but will they ever try to get a next iteration? Well, simply no :(

CoD and Assassins Creed franchise...nuff said. You are smart to not go that route.

I would gladly wait 2-5 years for a new gta, red dead or bioshock.

Same here, I really like the philosophy they have, it's really refreshing.

They don't always get it 100% right, but the products are generally of very high quality.

For sure they rely on Rockstar a lot, but they have others too.

Nothing to do with maths. It's pure genetics.

Having a Jewish CEO on top of the company is basically cheating.

Assassin's Creed immediately popped into my mind. In fact, this whole article seemed like a middle finger to the Assassin's Creed franchise. There are only so many bails of hay you can jump into before you want to hang yourself.

Couldn't agree more. The annualization of games absolutely destroys the quality and lasting appeal of them. It's sort of like comparing a little Ford Fiesta against a Rolls-Royce.

I can see an uninformed investor wanting their biggest franchises to come out more frequently. Why not make money every year instead of every five? But that's not how it works with these huge games. Some games that took their time like Witcher 3, GTA 5, and Red Dead were very rich experiences. Contrast that with Assassin's Creed. In the Witcher a point of interest on the map can be a whole subplot whereas a point of interest in Assassin's Creed is a chest with $15 in it.

@Yams1980: That's not always the case. When you annualize franchises, people eventually get tired of it regardless of its quality. It's nice to take a break from something and then see it pop up again a few years later. It gives you a chance to actually miss it before a new entry comes out.

I'm behind them on this 100%. Always have been.

I just wish they'd re-release their back catalog on GOG or something. They have some great FMV games from the 90s that would be great to not have to go through crazy hoops to get working.

I love how they took a jab at EA and all their acquisitions. EA bought at least 11 developers over the years that they shut down later. EA is infamous for this.

Sounds like some b.s. they're feeding to their shareholders.

Call of Duty shows no signs of slowing down. That series is consistently good, and sales are still very strong.

Also, I thought GTA5 was more of the same and never finished it. Maybe it's time to dust off the old PS3 and give it another shot.

@moose-fitz: I know, so let me break it down:

A company has an obligation to its shareholders to maximize profits. So, when a company like Activision is successful selling annualized COD, shareholders want to know why a mega successful franchise, like GTA, isnt being released more often. When they argue for sake of quality, again, shareholders will look at the consistent quality of COD, and wonder what the problem is.

I understand that every year may be much, but every five years is way too long, also.

@bat725: Having what, three different dev teams working on COD at any one time, and having the budgets expected for the #1 first person shooter on the market tends to help. BS or not, the move away from annualization pleases me, as a consumer, who isnt going to invest time and money each year to the same old incremental, rehashed shit. What is there to complain about with this?

@fetcher:

Heck I was a huge fan of NCAA football, but I got real tired of the annual release that would introduce new bug ridden features each year and include the last years bugs. I always thought it would be better to release a 'team pack' every year and a new upgraded game every three years. That would have given EA time to put out solid bug free games. But NOOOOO all they went after was the instant buck.

@sdzald: Sports games are weird. Some actually have a contract stating you must release a game every year if you want our licence. Plus you pay this massive license fee that other games don't need to pay so you really do need to make money back. Let's say madden went every 2 years. They aren't going to double there sales compared to releasing every year.

The best option would be a subscription serves where the game would be updated constantly and you would be buy a new copy every year. Problem then though is people would be complaining that now the can add features and improvements more slowly cause they already have my money.
