Tales of Xillia getting Western release

Namco Bandai PlayStation 3-exclusive role-playing game confirmed for 2013 release in Europe and North America.

The Tales role-playing game series will continue being told in the West, as Namco Bandai today announced that its PlayStation 3-exclusive Tales of Xillia will launch in Europe and North America in 2013.

Xillia is headed West.
Xillia is headed West.

Tales of Xillia was a hit in Japan, selling more than half a million copies in its first week on shelves last September. By year's end, the game had sold 760,000 copies. Tales of Xillia 2 is set for Japanese release later this year.

In a statement announcing the date, Namco Bandai's US VP of marketing Carlson Choi called the decision to localize the game one of the easiest the publisher has made, thanks to "the recent success for this year’s releases of Tales of the Abyss and Tales of Graces f."

The story of the latest game is set in Rieze Maxia, where humans and monsters live together with spirits. Players will be able to play as Jude Mathis, a medical student who defends himself with his fists, or Milla Maxwell, a mysterious female who has to recover her lost ability to summon spirits. The game features the Double Raid Linear Motion battle system, which has two characters teaming up for coordinated attacks and pulling off powerful special moves called Link Artes.

Tales of Xillia is an excellent Jp rpg.But from my point of view, north Americans should have played more awesome rpgs from Japan.Japanese company, including Namco,NBGI and Capcom, maintain Japanese's privellege so that they spent too much time translating games.I want to know why these japanese companies don't make both Japanese edition and North American edition at the same time.

...still no official release date?...makes me wonder if they will go quiet and let the hype slowly die out with the end result of no release all together

@BlackBaldwin If you didn't think Graces F wasn't good then I honestly don't know what your opinion of a good RPG could possibly be. It took everything good about the tales series and made the combat more fast-paced and exciting. Easily the best JRPG of the last five years.

Tales of Graces F was by my favorite game to play through this year. It was a very fresh experience and unlike any other game I have played. For some reason I felt like I was playing Grandia all over again... I don't exactly know why (either the general mood of the game or just the fun that I had playing it). I am definitely pre-ordering Tales of Xilia, and count me in as a fan of this franchise. Superb experience, I am telling you. It gets campy some times, but much more rarely than other JRPGs. No unnecessary melodrama. Instead, lots of humor. We need more like this.

Buy the game New if you like the Tales series. Don't buy it used from amazon or gamestop. If sales numbers are there they'll keep releasing in the USA. Excited for this game.

@jamyskis Im a RPG gamer but this last Generation ( XBOX 360 x PS3 ) was really not so simple to choose a console cuz almost all famous RPG games were released to XBOX 360 too.. and the worst thing was that XBOX 360 got some exclusive japanese games that i love like Dead or Alive 4 a Tenchu...even USA Tales of Vesperia version was exclusive lol....so was hard to decide what console get....i dont regret cuz i like XBOX 360 controller and i played really good games like Alan Wake that i loved...but now i cant play Tales of Xillia :((((((( ...Thas the reason that i prefer PS2 GEN cuz was obvious buy lol ...Next generation i hope sony do a nice console and microsoft dont get exclusive titles that i like cuz i dont wanna buy 2 consoles lol..

@Stardust7 I own both XBOX and PS3, but PS has more exclusives. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Tales of Graces PS only? Its a great game btw if you haven't played it.

@Stardust7 I'm in the same boat as you. I bought a 360 for its JRPG exclusives in its early stages. But now only the PS3 gets JRPG releases.

@tatsundere They are getting better at English VAs. Graces f only has a few cringe-worthy VAs and most of the main characters are pretty good. Pascal was incredibly annoying at first but even she grew on me.

I do feel sorry for the 360 owners out there, but conversely, the 360 is not the console you should be owning if you want to play JRPGs. The 360 has barely made a dent in Japan, so it's no wonder that JRPG publishers are concentrating more on the more popular console in that country, and that such a decision filters down to us in the West.

I agree with what some people here are saying though - platform exclusives are starting to be a very awkward affair.

@jamyskis I agree. In the case with Tales Of Vesperia, as to what NAMCO BANDAI stated that the rumors circulated before that they paid Microsoft to have it as an exclusive game. They obviously took that risk with them, failed to convince western people of buying that game on Xbox version, and then lost a lot of money. Now if they're listening right now and get all of the consumers attention to release TOV game since all Sony Playstation platform has been a home to a lot of popular RPG's and Strategy games, then they will eventually make a lot of profit.

@jamyskis Just an added statement. I didn't meant to say Xbox didn't had any RPG or Strategy games, but I do not see that the console was meant for a dedicated majority RPG genre titles and mostly I see was for mature content games.

"Oh no, Vesperia didn't sell like gangbusters despite no one even knowing it was on the 360! Time to pack it all in, guys-san! It will surely never ever sell outside of Japan or otaku, we put the best half of our asses into promoting it, too!"

@Stardust7 It isnt dumb.Just sales.Tales of Vesperia didn't sell well enough on the 360 to be worth putting it onto a microsoft system again.

However they sell well on the more rpg oriented company systems when ti comes to Nintendo and Sony.

@Stardust7 Sadly no.While it didn't bomb it's sales still showed it wasn't worth investing into.Unfortunately that is what you get for buying a system whose fan base is built around shooters only(with only 3 decent rpgs in there).

Glad to hear that Tales of Xillia is getting a NA release. One of the main reasons I bought Graces f was to support Namco's decision in localizing the title. I'm so happy that my purchased was justified, not only because of this localization, but also for the fact that Graces f is a damn good PS3 JRPG.

@Naridar 360 doesn't sell well in japan and there's always the perception that japan is the main market for JRPG. It does suck because games like Lost odyssey sold perfectly well but I do get the sense that developers in japan do simply want to be on a Sony platform despite it often meaning they'd come out on another console first, pretending to be exclusive and then kick that consoles fans in the teeth and add content for the PS3 versions.

Similar to what occured with titles like No More Heroes too so it's not just about the 360 but it's just very rare it goes the other way around and they add extra content to 360 / Wii versions or break exclusitivity to go from the PS3 too which is quite sad. Even games like Valkyria Chronicles which sell poorly on PS3 don't move but then if they don't sell very well on the other systems they seem to jump to PS3. I think maybe the devs just have better relations with Sony or see that they have a more balanced sales in different regions but it really is dumb that they won't release on 360 too and get more money.
