Tonight during The Game Awards, new independent studio Phoenix Labs, founded by a team of former BioWare and Blizzard developers, announced their first game: Dauntless.

A PC online co-op action RPG, Dauntless is set in an "untamed science-fantasy world." You play as an elite warrior known as a Slayer, fighting against enemy creatures known as Behemoths.

Now Playing: Dauntless - TGA 2016 Announce Trailer

Here is the official setup for Dauntless: "The world of Dauntless has been shattered by a cataclysmic event, creating a vast array of uncharted and majestic floating islands. Behemoths, as cunning as they are vicious, consume the land, and it’s up to the Slayers to hunt them down before they destroy what remains of the world."

Dauntless takes its inspiration from titles like Dark Souls, Monster Hunter, and World of Warcraft, Phoenix Labs said in a statement.

You can play solo or team up with others, as Dauntless supports up to four players. Watch the announcement trailer to learn more. Dauntless is due out in 2017.

So many ppl keep saying it looks generic. How does it look generic?

Art style? That art style is still in the minority, afaik. Besides, why would aesthetic be the one thing to determine if you buy a game?

Game mechanics? How the hell does anyone know from that trailer?

I think it looks cool aesthetically. The flavor or attitude of the trailer was kinda cheesy and generic, tho.

Since most of the competent people are the ones who have left Blizzard and Bioware, this might be pretty good.

When I think of Bioware in the positive sense I think of sprawling RPGs with many dialogue options, many paths to solving problems and very strategic pause and commit combat.

When I think of Blizzard I think of massive MMO worlds, class based strategy systems with many people. I also think of intricate Starcraft strategies with extremely diverse races that play completely different.

And from those people we get this. Which has none of all that and is mostly generic. Aren't these guys ever ashamed of using names like Blizzard and Bioware in their advertisement? Best way to get people to laugh, not to promote your products.

Meh...need more info. The graphical and art aesthetic looks okay, but nothing special. Same with the premise.

Better have a plethora of amazing armor sets and weapons. I want all projects to succeed but I was getting bored by the end of the trailer.

@millionsedge: it is just a cutscene after all. What they need to show is gameplay.

Bland, generic and non-immersive. Why don't these former employees play to the strengths that initially made the original parent companies household names?

Another one of these games from former Blizzard devs. We all know how well those games usually turn out.

@Thanatos2k: The next game by Runic is Hob, which is some kind of Zelda-esque game. Haven't seen much about it besides a few pictures and an announcement trailer, but it'll be on PS4.

@Thanatos2k: That explains a lot. Runic isn't actually doing it, they just sold the rights to someone.Plus mobile. I don't really do mobile games.

@Thanatos2k: Or Hellgate London. Or Throne of Darkness. Haven't heard of these? There's a reason why.

@RossRichard: I played Hellgate London. It was absolutely not as bad as people like to claim it is. Certainly better than garbage like Destiny, and some people call that good.

@sbnewsom: The rights could be farmed out - As is what happened with KotOR 2 and Neverwinter Nights 2. That said, KotOR 3 won't happen - We got the MMO instead. EA did mutter something about Jade Empire in the last couple of years though.

@Golden_Gonads: EA has exclusive rights to Star Wars now, remember? No rights will be farmed out.

So...something like a co-op 3rd person RPG? But with a focus on being difficult? Okay, that might be cool. Souls games are pretty fun in co-op.

@barbarossa213: I just wish my favorite companies known for great SINGLEPLAYER games didn't overhype something that lead to being announced as something MULTIPLAYER related. Ugh
