Tecmo Bowl snaps on Wii VC

Old-school gridiron game leads Sonic Spinball and Double Dungeons onto Nintendo's downloadable game service.

While the new wave of downloadable game services has already brought dozens of classic action and arcade titles back into the spotlight, the sports genre has been generally ignored in the trend. That might change as Nintendo today announced that a fondly remembered football game is headlining a slate of three new Virtual Console releases today.

Where you at, Bos?
Where you at, Bos?

Tecmo's humbly named Tecmo Bowl didn't carry an NFL license, but that didn't stop it from creating a game with thinly veiled stand-ins for the league's biggest teams. The NES game originally had an NFL Players Association license that let gamers storm the field with legends like Walter Payton, Bo Jackson, and Lawrence Taylor. However, all the players' names have been stripped from the Virtual Console edition and replaced with their jersey numbers.

Tecmo Bowl features a dozen teams, each with a lean offensive playbook of four plays and a defensive scheme that consists of choosing which play the offense planned to run. The game is playable alone or with a friend and sells for 500 Wii points ($5).

Joining Tecmo Bowl on the Virtual Console is Sega's mascot twist on another, less contact-intensive form of recreation, Sonic Spinball. Players take control of Sonic as he is launched into a series of pinball levels. But unlike an ordinary pinball game, Sonic Spinball features sprawling playfields laden with enemies, chaos emeralds to collect, and boss battles. Originally released on the Sega Genesis, Sonic Spinball is available for 800 Wii points ($8) and features support for up to four players.

The last Virtual Console release of the week is the TurboGrafx-16 first-person role-playing game Double Dungeons. Sporting two-player simultaneous play, Double Dungeons includes 22 scenarios for players to tackle and is available for 600 Wii points ($6).

@theclaw135 I'll agree with that, and would like to point out the Neo Geo Pocket Color as a candidate too. I would also like a subscription model option like Gametap has, but that's probably just wishful thinking.

I dont understand how anyone could think that $5 is too much to ask to re-live the classics with the convenience of the VC. IMO this is an extremely fair price. Heck, you can’t hardly rent a game for that much anymore. I think VC is a great deal.

I have a Wii, I have 13 VC games, and I also hate the prices. Back in the day, Nintendo made a ton of money selling blank carts to the publishers. That crap doesn't fly anymore. Everyone wants their fair share of the pie now. Nintendo isn't making what it used to on these old games, despite what you read on the internet.

Tecmo Bowl is a genuine gaming classic. I can't tell you how much I played this game as a kid. If I cared for the Nintendo Wii, I would certainly buy it.

I don't think the prices $5-10 are cheap exactly but I certainly don't think they're unfair or in any way a ripoff. Many of these are classic games that cost $40-60 back in their day and you're getting them for a fraction of the price. The money you pay for these games isn't just for the game but also the service. It cost money to run the virtual console. Also many of these games aren't first party so Nintendo probably takes a small cut but so the publisher of the game as well of course. With all that and whatever it takes to get the game formatted, emuslated or whatever and then on the VC, I don't think $5-10 is a big deal. Figure that many VC games sell maybe a few thousand with the bigger titles selling maybe a few hundred thousand, it's not that much money for any one game. So even if a game in an N64 title that costs $10 and sells 100,000, that still only comes out to a million dollars, then minus any programming work and such, you'll see that they're not exactly raking in hundreds of millions. Last, I don't see $5 as a lot of money for anyone. I'm not going to assume rude things or make comments like "get a job" but honestly...$5 is a lot of money to anyone??? How many VC games do you need to have? With spending $50, the price of one new Wii game, someone could get a variety of classic games. If they bought a fairly equal mix of games from all the systems represented, they could get 6 or 7 truly classic great games. I don't think that's unreasonable at all. Considering that people go to fast food restaurants and spend that much or more on junk food they don't need or go to a grocery store and buy a couple pops and some candy bars, it comes out to nearly that much. Or those who buy stuff that could be considered expensive by some people. Do you buy shoes that cost $100, jeans that cost $50? Etc. You get the idea. What you consider okay to spend on other items but expensive for games, people will feel the opposite so stop whining because they want to make a profit. Last I checked, it was a business and the goal was to make money. Maybe I'll send them a nasty letter and we can get everything for free.

As long as we pay the $5.00 they are gonna charge it. Now if only we could get every Nintendo Wii owner, (or at least 80%) to stop buying VC games and then Nintendo would be forced to lower the prices if they wanted us to buy them. But we live in a country where you are not even united with your next door neighbor, so good luck.

We need GB and GBC games. Not even one has ever been legally remade, ported, emulated, included in a compliation, or had any other form of rerelease for a non-Game-Boy platform anywhere on Earth.

i have to say these games are a bit expensive, they should be priced from at least $2.50-$7.00. isnt there a tecmo super bowl, not just tecmo bowl. anyway still a good game, classic. Also for those who says that u should get jobs, some of us have jobs, and we need to pay bills, so we dont have much money to spend on these. heck, i barely could afford to get a ps3. i had to save money for over a year to get it. my point is that, those who says to get jobs, need to understand that many people have to pay bills, and have very little money to spend because of this.

Lower the prices these games have no packaging and they already made the profit from this hash. Get out of here with the 5 bucks on this game and others like it. Sorry, but just because I can afford it, doesn't make it a fair price this game is older than half these guys on the board.

$5 is not worth it. Youngins are pumping out free flash games that are 10 times better than this and Yes, I owned it on NES. Especially when I can find NFL 2K3 for around the same price for my much loved Dreamcast ....

" While it's great to see it offered it's hardly the same w/ no player names, and " Blame EA and the NFL. Football games using past teams cannot have player names unless they pay for a large chunk of change. Stupid ass out of work gorillas want millions just for their name on a game.

I don't even see how these games are overpriced. 5-10 bucks per game is awesome, and they will probably keep you entertained longer than some of the crap that is released anymore. Heck even 10 bucks is pocket change anymore. If you cannot afford 5, or 10 dollars for a game then you need to take a good look at your life.

about being over priced... Well, even today when I buy a lot of NES games they cost anywhere from $5-10 for the actual cartridge. So $5 for a NES is more than reasonable. Especially when talking about Double Dragon, Kid Icarus, and some other titles. However, Tecmo Bowl being stripped of player names? While it's great to see it offered it's hardly the same w/ no player names, and having them stripped should have warranted an entire dollar off. :D Anyway you can't claim these games are too much because a lot of them will cost you at least $5 to buy for the NES. Personally I'll stick to the NES when it comes to these games, though...

As some have already said, while Tecmo Bowl is a pretty good game in its own right, Tecmo Super Bowl is the one I would have liked to see more. Not that it matters to me all that much, considering I can play both of them any time I want. Oh well.

Omisson of player names is lame but I loved that game as a kid. I used to think that the little cut scenes for action plays were sweet and had really good graphics (for the 80's, come on!). Come to think of it, the player name thing is neither Nintendo's nor Tecmo's fault, at all. It is all EA's fault for dang Madden. As long Madden has exclusive NFL license little things like this are going to be really annoying. I think if a game held license when it was produced, then any future distribution of it should have the right to let the game be the same as it was made i.e. player names. Its not like any of those players are even still around anyway so why should the NFL or EA care. Whatever, I'm still going do download this game anyhow.

anybody that has played tecmo super bowl knows the best teams are the Raiders and 49ers, raiders had bo jackson AND marcus allen, with tim brown (hall of fame soon) and willie gault, one of the fastest men in the world at the time, while the niners had Joe Montana and Steve young at QB, roger craig, a damn good running back, and then the beasts of all at recievers Jerry rice and John Taylor, the best recieving tandem ever, far above Harrison and Wayne if you got the ball in the hands of Rice, Taylor, Jackson, or allen in Tecmo super bowl, you'd win almost every game
