Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Producer Says Third Movie Won't Happen

"Before you know it, it's over."

It looks like this summer's action sequel Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows will be the last movie in the current rebooted version of the franchise. Producer Andrew Form has discussed the impact of the film's disappointing box office performance.

No Caption Provided

Speaking to Collider, Form explained that everything was in place for the movie to follow the success of its 2014 predecessor. "From our first Super Bowl teaser to everything we launched, we felt so good about our material, and for some reason it did not find the audience that the first movie found," he said. "And we talk about it all the time, and we tried to figure it out, but we cannot put our finger on what happened. We really can't.

"It's just one of those things where we feel like we made a really great movie; we thought at the time that our release date was great, and we added all these new characters. Even before the movie came out, we were feeling great.

"And you wake up two days before the movie opens and you go, 'Wow, I don't know if this movie is tracking as well as it should.' Then you hope, and then Thursday night happens and your midnights come in and you're like, 'That's not what [the first movie] did,' and then sure enough your weekend comes and it's nowhere near what anyone thought. Before you know it, it's over."

"It's a sequel. You have to give the audience something that's really new and fresh. Maybe just adding characters from the canon wasn't enough."

Form went onto state that audiences were unlikely to see any more films in the current series. "I don't think there's Turtles 3," he said. "But I wouldn't say there's never going to be another Turtles movie."

To date Out of the Shadows has earned $245.6 million worldwide, while the first movie made $493.3 million. Megan Fox, Will Arnett, and William Fichtner starred, alongside Arrow star Stephen Amell, Laura Linney, and Tyler Perry.

The problem was Bay isn't a fan of the content, and that always shows through. Couple that with Bay needing huge, bloated budgets, and they never had a chance. Start conceiving a reboot, bring in people that actually love the source material. Use motion capture actors, like Andy Serkis, instead of CGI. Then limit the budget to under 100 million, and they can pull these Turtles out of the soup!

What do you expect you let Michael Bay make the first crappy one then turn around and do the same thing on the second, which was dumber than the first.

Producer should fire himself for picking Bay as a director at all

No Shit, if the second film takes in much less than the first, it's damn near a certainty a 3rd won't happen. The public spoke loudly on this franchise. Too bad they didn't stay away as much for Ghostbusters 2016.

Another Teenage Mutant Ninja Turd of a movie. What a bag of shit. I enjoyed the cartoon when I was 7, but now its awful like a lot of stuff you have fond memories of. Sometimes best to have good memories than get spoiled by a crap reboot.

I liked it. It wasn't Shakespeare or a literary master piece or anything. But I thought it was fun to watch. It was really basically a live action version of own of the 80's cartoons I guess. It's nothing that needs a great deal of thought to watch and it is entertaining. It's no more ludicrous of a movie then anything else that is produced. It was fun to see the other bad guys in 3D. It reminds me of something like Howard the Duck. that was a fun movie at the time, but totally ludicrous...and a little creepy in retrospect.

Oh, thank Glob.

As for what happened, obviously everybody who made the mistake of watching the first one quickly realized how horrible it was and didn't come back for the second. Fool me once, shame on Michael Bay. Fool me twice and you can't get fooled again!

It probably didn't "find the audience that the first film did" because the audience found the first film to be obnoxious and horrible.

It's an excellent film for fans of the cartoon show. Too bad fans didn't show up. This is why the original didn't have anything fans wanted, for some reason that made more money. So the next time fans want to be catered to and they're not...this is why. I for one LOVED out of the shadows, it had everything I loved from the cartoon series.

@Bread_or_Decide: its because the original turned off many people. Even though the 2nd one was better I didn't go to watch it because of bad the first one was.

It was good as a mindless popcorn flick, but terrible as a movie in general. Way too much going on in it and way too many bad guys as well. The tone needs to go slightly darker, as I could swear this movie seemed rated G. That, and not many people dug the new designs. hearing the word technodrome brought back some memories though...

This is unfortunate because the 2nd one was actually decent. The first one sucked so bad nobody bothered to give the franchise a second chance

I'll tell you what happened, it's really simple:

When you let Michael Bay shit on people's childhood, you'll fool them once.

If you let him try again, those people will shit on you.

I guess I'll never understand the hate the first movie got? It was a little darker in tone yet retained the turtles trademark personalities and traits. The action was good, the CGI was excellent, and the story wasn't cringe worthy, it wasn't great but it could have been so much worse. It was LEAGUE'S ahead of stuff like Transformers and GI Joe.

The second was a blast for the most part minus the very little fighting and action?!? There was a lot of running and jumping but almost no fights.

Sucks my kids and I were really excited for a third movie.

$245.6 million worldwide damn that sounds like a ton of money but then again you have the budget from the movie among other expenses if theres no sequel then i think its back to the drawning board for the franchise

IMO the reason the first TMNT did well was because people were curious to see a big budget Michael Bay interpretation. Too bad the sequel failed (I heard it was a better movie) but I'm happy this version of the Turtles is dead!

The first Michael Bay TMNT movie sucked. That's "what happened." Did no one tell him that? (Also, Girl Ghostbusters sucked.)

Do Hollywood producers live in their own parallel universe or something?

I will likely see this movie on Netflix or somewhere eventually, but felt no urgency to see it in theater as word of mouth said it wasnt as good as the mediocre first movie. The first movie was ok, nothing great, but not as terrible as some people like to say (movies are only 10's or 0's to some people). But these film makers need to look at more than just box office numbers to get the real picture of what people really thought of their movies. A reboot might get good number simply due to nostalgia and hope. However, if the fans are disappointed, it will show in the sales of the sequel. It's so common these days that i'm shocked that the movie studios seem oblivious to it.

Can we please just let Netflix make some TMNT shows? And for the love of God, keep MB away from all of my childhood memories.

Whoever thought changing their origins around, dumping horrible actors into the movies, turning Shredder into a patsy, and making Michelangelo into a sexual deviant, was a good idea, should be taken out back and beat with a wet inner tube.

I am absolutely ecstatic that there will not be another movie.

Man this guy is a really good liar. If he thought that this movie was good, his head is shoved too far up his own a** to know what a good movie is.

The character models for the turtles are just so ugly compared to the original 2 movies (1980s/90s). That, and kids don't care about the turtles anymore.

well, at least they tried! wait, no they didn't...

the first movie sucked and people learned their lesson to not trust a movie with michael bay's name on it so easily (even if only as producer). let's be honest, though. who even thought these rebooted tmnt movies would be anything but slightly above medicore in the first place? the main problem was that they aimed the films too squarely at kids when they should have delivered at least a pg-13 depiction, similar to the tone of the comic books. no 3rd movie? i don't think anyone cares.
