Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection Hands-On

The PlayStation 3's download service just got heavy with the release of the latest game in the Tekken series.

Though it isn't available on the US version of Sony's PlayStation Store just yet, Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection is now available for purchase in Hong Kong and Japan. No, we're not talking about another PSP download. This is the same fighting game that Namco put out on the PSP, but it's running on the PlayStation 3, with full support for widescreen and 1080p resolution. It appears to take after the arcade release, meaning there aren't many extra modes, but it's most certainly the same exciting game of Tekken that you've come to expect from Namco.

The download clocks in at over 800MB and is selling for around $16 in the Hong Kong store. What you get for that money appears to be an arcade-perfect conversion of Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection, which is the upgrade to Tekken 5 that adds new characters and moves. The game offers single-player play, a versus mode, and a ghost battle mode. Like in the PSP version, you can take on computer-controlled fighters that are governed by ghosts, which are profiles based on how another human player plays the game. Dark Resurrection on the PSP had you manually uploading your own ghosts and downloading others. This PS3 release appears to grab new ghosts automatically. While you probably won't mistake the ghosts you'll fight for real human players, they tend to fight a lot better than the average fighting-game artificial intelligence, since you can "teach" these ghosts more elaborate combos and tricks.

All of the Tekken 5 fighters are here and immediately selectable. The new fighters--which aren't all that new anymore, since Tekken 5: DR has been out for a while now--are the returning Armor King, the Russian special forces operative Dragunov, and the rich girl who fights for laughs, Lili. New to this PS3 release is a playable version of Jinpachi, the game's final boss. Jinpachi unlocks after you beat the arcade mode and plays reasonably well, though you can't customize his look at all. The rest of the characters can be customized using money you earn by winning fights. You can purchase new colors for each of a character's costumes, as well as body items (like a guitar to sit on Hwoarang's back), new hairstyles, sunglasses, and more. The game also has a gallery mode, where you can spend some of that in-game cash on ending videos and character art. To keep the game's overall file size lower, the ending videos that you can purchase aren't part of the package. So when you purchase them, you'll have to download them individually.

Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection added new characters to an already-robust lineup when it was released into arcades, and now they're all on the PS3, too.
Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection added new characters to an already-robust lineup when it was released into arcades, and now they're all on the PS3, too.

With support for 1080p, you'd be right to expect Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection to look sharp. Namco hasn't done anything noticeable to enhance the graphics on the PS3, but it's a nice-looking arcade game to begin with, and the higher resolution seems to help the game look as good as it ever has. The frame rate is typically solid and smooth, though there were a few rare spots where it dropped a handful of frames.

While it doesn't offer the same bowling modes or online world rankings that the PSP game offered, this budget-priced version of Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection has it where it counts: in the gameplay. Plans for a US release of this game haven't been announced at this time, but since it's already sitting in foreign stores (and since more crafty North American PS3 owners are figuring out how to purchase from those stores by the day), it probably isn't too far off.

I love tekken, best fighting game ever. It seems like all the good PS3 games are coming out later this year though thats why i'm waiting to by t he system. Like Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, This game and a few others. To me its just not worth having a PS3 right now because theres only like 2 or 3 good games out for it so far.

Uh buddy, I never said Tekken was BETTER than VF. VF is the better game but Tekken is #2 in my opinion. You sound like one of the elitist VF snobs that put so many new people off the game. So please enlighten me...what other 3d games would you put above Tekken?

KillbombX "Guys, this is a BUDGET download so you can't really expect them to go out of their way to enhance the graphics. If it looks as good as the arcade version, then I will be perfectly happy. Actually, this is probably the best reason to get a PS3 right now until VF5 comes out. No other 3d fighting game comes close to matching Tekken except for VF." Hmmm, except that VF destroys any Tekken out there. Tekken should be at the bottom of any top five list of fighters, if it even makes the list at all. I'm probably the dumb one here though. Once again KillbombX demonstrates the absolute upper crust of GS suscribers. I quiver obsequiously in your collective presence. Yay Namco!

Wow, the character models in this game look crappy. I guess they do mention they dont spruce up the game much except the resolution. But the stills make it look like it is really blurry.

Hmm tricky decision, but I think ill pass on this. Tekken PSP has DOJO mode, will always brings me back (Essentially a bunch of leagues and tourneys that get progressivly harder). With no graphical update other than 1080p support, ill wait for Tekken 6 or virtual fighter 5.

Blow away Xbox Arcade ???? Ha ha ha. Tekken is great but who cares about the graphics on downloadable games when you can have the original Contra, Street Fighter II, Dig Dug, Mortal Kombat, Luminies Live and so on. One of the strongest things about Live Arcade is that it has brought back a ton of timeless classics , not old xbox games. This move brings in old timers back in the day when they played Dig Dug and Commandos on an Apple 2GS and stuff like that. Sony isn't brining in any new customers with another PS2 Tekken. XBL and WII DLS blows Sony out of the water.

"dberuvides Xbox arcade killer. The graphics blow away anything for xbox arcade which this game is competing against. " There is a big differnace between this and any game from the live arcade, and that's about 750mb. Xbox live arcade games are required to be below 50 mb.

Sorry but this looks very PS2ish.... Tekken still has the same basic moves. No advance move, just low and high kick and punch... BRING ON VIRTUA FIGHTER 5

The only thing about tekken is that the gameplay seems a bit.....slow, compared to DOA at least. Other than that i think ill stick with my psp version of tekken 5 and lets bring on tekken 6!

I don't even like VF, but as a good fighting gamer I know VF>tekken in terms of depth. Tekken is more popular than VF even in japan right now and dfefinitely in the US. DOA is not even in the same league. Any good fighting gamer knows DOA is at the very bottom of the barrel (no respect to hardcore doa players). Itabashi begged to get DOA at evo 2005 but couldn't. DOA finally got their chance at evo 2006 and it had the lowest turnout. At evo west about 10 people showed up compared to 60+ for tekken. BTW there's a reason why online will never be taken seriously by real fighting gamers.

You know the funniest thing is when the PS folk come into the Xbox forums they bash away.... When the Xboxers come into the PS3 forums and bash its a crime.... I have played the PS3 and its OK but just OK ... If you are looking for pound for pound quality, that can only be found on XBox 360 and DOA4 is in a league of its own and should not be compared to the other fighters...

Wow another terrible looking game for the Lamestation 3. I hope nobody expects anything good to come out on that bottlenecking hunk of glitchy plastic. I mean common Sony this is pathetic no way this will sell 500,000 copies and thats what it has to to make a profit. I mean I can see a customer paying $600 for a console when its a big brand name but I can't see a developer paying 11,000,000 to develop for it when the 360 has a bigger install base and dev kits are free. And that is tight ecno13 this looks dated.

okay, for one thing Tekken 6 is in the making, that will be the "next-gen tekken". this game wasn't meant to be taken as next-gen, its simply a port of the ps2 version with slightly spiffier graphics for 16 bucks which isn't THAT bad. my god you people are overly critical about every freaking thing the ps3 throws at us, give some time and a chance. and i downloaded that gran turismo hd demo and considering its free its definately worth a look, the game looks really good and its still a year off so you can expect it to look even better as time goes on. and no im not a sony fanboy, i own a xbox 360 as well and i love it too, i just don't like seeing either system get bashed over some nonsense like this

Because it's the popular thing to hate the PS3 right now. That and because XBoxers just have to find every reason to rain on ps3 owners' parade. Grow up people. Tekken is played competitively as a true fighting game. It's one of the best that's currently out. This is a good arcade download for any system! I bet people wouldn't be saying anything if it was for the 360. Look at Splinter Cell Double Agent on release ...." this game is awesome, I love the multiplayer...etc" After announcement for ps3 "that game sucked anyways, that game was boring anyway.."

Compare this with crappy games you can download on xbox360 - this is downloadable game. so give it a break for looking like ps2 game. this is service, and good service for offering nice game, cheap, right to your living room. can you actually find negative sides? why the heck good news turns upside-down at Gamespot nowadays? especially when it's about ps3.

OMG Pacman and Galaga still has the same crappy graphics!!!! Come on people, this is like an XBLA game, I don't hear anyone complain about old graphics on XBLA. Let the PS3 owners be happy with what they are going to get. This is excellent news because it was almost impossible to have friends over and play a good VS session on the PSP. Besides, if you really play fighting games, you know that Tekken DR is leagues better than DOA4, topped only by SC series and maybe VF series.

"The bottom line is this: 16 dollars for tekken 5: DR on any system is a steal. Of course it can't hold it's own with DOA 4 which was made exclusively for next gen, but it's also 25% of the original launch price of DOA 4. " Its also 25% of the product, so its a given. But even then, DOA4 almost a year earlier is far better, and can be had now for around 20.00 on ebay, which isnt that much higher, and a far better game and product. Not to mention it actually looks next-gen, not like a high-res PS2 game.

Where are the better games that are suppose to be coming to the PS3? I mean who cares about tekken? My ps3 is starting to sit. I play my ps2 more. Maybe because alot of my friends still play it, but a game hasn't dropped that wowed me yet. I hurts me to say that Gears of war is the most enjoyable game I played so far in this next-gen race.
