Tekken x Street Fighter No Longer in Active Development

"We don't want to split these communities."

Tekken X Street Fighter is no longer in active development, Bandai Namco has revealed. Speaking in an interview with GameSpot, Tekken game director Katsuhiro Harada indicated that releasing the crossover fighting game now could fracture the audiences of both franchises.

"When we develop fighting games, we try to keep the core community in mind as well as the wider audience that wants to play these games," he explained. "But currently the situation is with fighting games, you have Street Fighter V that just released--a lot of people are playing that fervently--and there's a large crowd out there waiting or Tekken 7."

Now Playing: Tekken's Harada on Dealing With Yakuza, Impersonating Yoshinori Ono

He continued: "We don't want to split these communities, so a good window in which to release Tekken x Street Fighter is something that's become difficult recently. So it's on hold for the moment."

Tekken x Street Fighter was first announced during San Diego Comic-Con 2010 as a partnership between Bandai Namco and Capcom. As part of the arrangement, both companies would have access to each other's iconic cast of fighting game characters for use in two new fighting games.

Capcom's game Street Fighter x Tekken was released in 2012, but Bandai Namco had shown very little of its project in years following. Despite this, Harada previously maintained tthat he work was ongoing. In August 2013, he said it was "still in development" and explained the "several reasons" for why there hadn't been updates on its project, after Capcom's release.

"One of the reasons is, Street Fighter X Tekken was released," he said. "That still had updates until recently. One interesting thing we’ve seen with that title when it came out was that it's not quite what we expected.

Harada said Bandai Namco was still looking for "the right time" to release Tekken x Street Fighter.

He affirmed that the game was still in development again July 2013: "It might seem like we haven't started on it at all, but the character lineup has been decided upon since a very long time ago. And we've already finished the polygon models, moves, and systems."

This marks the first instance of Harada admitting the game is no longer an active project at Bandai Namco. The publisher recently released Pokken Tournament, in partnership with Nintendo and The Pokemon company. Its next major fighting game is Tekken 7, which is set for release on PlayStation 4.

Well at least we'll get a little taste of Tekken X Street Fighter in Tekken 7 with Akuma being there anyways.

Damn well that sux only reason the crppsspver was pf any interest to me in the 1st place was because I thought I'd get to play Tekken X StreetFighter never cared for StreetFighter X Tekken as I always thought Streetfighter's style of fighting to be too slow.

I used to love Tekken growing up, but nowadays, fighting games just don't hold much lasting appeal to me.

He said IT'S ON HOLD...so why are people saying that he pulled the plug on the game? HOLD DOES NOT MEAN CANCELLED

@phoenixvanguard: I'm telling you...we will see and hear more news by 2018-19. The game is too far in development for Namco to trash it all together. It wouldn't make sense. And Street Fighter X Tekken sold well so what do you mean by "shit business"?

@phoenixvanguard: Just because it didn't meet their expectations back in 2012 doesn't mean it didn't sell well. It sold 1.4 m ourt of 2m back then. That's still pretty damn good.

You can feed into the headline all you want but not once did they use the word "cancelled." Once they say it's cancelled, then I'll let it go

@phoenixvanguard: I agree man, in another 3 years I don't think a Tekken X Street Fighter game is going to entice me to play the game considering Street Fighter X Tekken wasn't as good. If they still want to make it worth anything they could had just make this Namco vs. Capcom instead, that way it'll be more interesting.

@Dark_sageX: We already had the superior version of that with Capcom vs SNK for three whole games and even more if you count the non-fighting games. Time for a new crossover.

I completely understand their decision; tekken x street fighter could've included more modes and street fighter characters than the entirety of SFV lol.

I had my suspicions and Akuma's inclusion in Tekken 7 pretty much all but confirmed it for me. While that's disappointing to hear, I'd like for them to focus on bringing Tekken 7 out on consoles sooner.

Well that will be a real shame if this game doesn't come out. I really enjoyed Street Fighter X Tekken and want to see Namco's take on a crossover.

Doesn't look like it will happen for a number of reasons, spoken and unspoken, but would still find it interesting to see some of my favorite Street Fighters in a Tekken style game. Since it may never see the light of day, wonder if we will ever find out who made the roster and see those 3d models. Karin and Juri in particular.

It's hard to believe this was for technical reasons given that we recently saw Akuma in Tekken 7 with all of his SF moves present and correct. It's almost certainly a commercial decision.

Well, here's the fighting game equal to Duke Nukem Forever... and Beyond Good and Evil 2.

Quite disappointed though as I was hoping the game would be better than Street Fighter X Tekken and it's DLC scams. But now, no SF X Tekken crossovers for me, I guess.

Yea bollocks.. You simply aren't working on it because the sales for 'Street fighter Tekken' were so poor. The thing is, I think if Namco did do the cross over, it would probably do better because it would add new mechanics to the 'Street Fighter' universe, and it wouldn't use the same 3d models from the previous 'Street Fighter IV' games.

this game was never REALLY in development... it was all pr to gauge the gaming climate and if there was enough interest in it. there is no need for it tight now, if ever. perhaps in 5 years once sfv and tekken 7 has settled down a bit. until then...

how about you guys finally put out the xenosaga hd trilogy? you keep asking the community to sign the petition and yet you have been silent about it for over half a year. all people want is an upscale, not a remake! a multi-million dollar company can't get that in order?
