Tell Me Why Is Free So Players Can Support Trans And Queer Communities Directly

Developer Dontnod hopes players will use the money they may have spent on Tell Me Why to instead directly support trans and queer communities directly.

Episodic adventure game Tell Me Why is free on Xbox platforms, Windows 10, and Steam for the entire month of June to celebrate Pride Month, and developer Dontnod has a few recommendations on where players can instead spend the money they may have spent on Dontnod's game to more directly help transgender and queer communities.

In a blog post, the developers made clear their reasons for making Tell Me Why free.

Now Playing: Tell Me Why Cinematic Trailer | Xbox Games Showcase 2020

"Our intention in making Tell Me Why free for June 2021 is both to allow even more people to access the game and to encourage our players to spend their money in places that will directly affect trans and queer communities," the post reads.

The developers go on to list a number of ways players can support LGBTQIA+ communities, ranging from donating to a charity, giving aid to a trans or queer person in need directly, or financially supporting games and interactive fiction from trans or queer creators, such as Happy Ray Games' Ikenfell. Dontnod points out that even for those who can't support with money, they can still be an advocate for trans and queer rights by promoting works by trans and queer creators and by learning about contributions made by LGBTQIA+ people throughout world history.

One of Tell Me Why's main characters, Tyler Ronan, is trans, and is voiced by trans voice actor August Black. The game was the first major title to feature a main, playable trans character. Dontnod worked closely with the LGBTQIA+ media group GLAAD to ensure the depiction of the game's trans and queer characters were respectful and and authentic.

90% of you have absolutely no idea what the story in Tell Me Why is about.

It would be a shame to have the game downloaded but never played.

Everything you may thought about the game which made you reject it,is based on wrong assumptions.

If you like amazing told stories(the pace, characters, dialogs, great voice talents, the building up,mystery) ,please play it...you WILL thank me

@sladakrobot: I've observed you making this same argument twice in this thread now. Please elaborate. "It looks pretty" doesn't make for a good story. Also "It's not THAT gay" as a selling point, particularly one you made to a bisexual person earlier, doesn't seem to be an effective point for anyone.

Way to go.

@id0ntkn0w7: Since i played the game i just feel it gets an unjustified backlash so i replied to several posts.

If ones liked other episodic games, imo, there is no reason not to try this game out.

In one posts here i point out how good the story is(and presented) and in the other post i point out how the devs put a great attention to detail around the graphical presentation(characters and the environment, its very atmospheric).

Well,i didnt knew i was replying to a bi person but that doesnt change the fact this is not a cheap interactive movie as that person claimed it to be.
As it turned out, that person just doesnt like episodic games.

Tell Me Why would anyone care about a story of a game with no gameplay? Its not free for no reason.

@hardwenzen: All those who liked the Telltale games or Life is Strange and its prequel care or games like Detroid Became Human think different i guess.

Obviously you dont have fun with such games, nothing wrong with that.

Still, its a very well told story with characters you can identify with, you care about decisions and the story has no flawed pace.

I see it like this...you spend 12-15 buck to watch a movie in a theatre and its a passive experience.
With this game you have a great told story and you are more involved in the outcome...for free.

If you download this game, and play it on steam, the first thing you will hear from friends on your friends list is Tell Me Why you're playing this garbage.

Make a decent game, don't care about your politics.

This is the first time I'll pass on a free game on Steam. I'd rather not have this crap in my library.

Now that the game is on my library, it's probably going to stay there forever without it ever being installed.

I would never put money in this kind of games, it's just not the kind of thing I enjoy.

Sorry but a good deed and the appeal of some good karma isn't enough to get me to play a game by Dontnod, the mostly aptly named studio ever (I have to tell myself "don't nod off to sleep" when I play their games).

You want to make the Doom Marine trans? Go for it, I'll play that game, I don't give a damn (though I'm sure many will).

Don't mistake this as anything other than marketing and pandering.

If someone hands you something free, but it costs you time to actually use it, time that you will NEVER get back, then it is in fact not free.

@Akriel_Boulve: Contrarians are always so much fun to chat with.

This game is free. Being condescending doesn't change that, (and certainly doesn't endear you to people who are just enjoying a simple chat).

Happy gaming! ✌

@thecupidstunts: What do I care about endearing myself to strangers online?

I honestly don't care what you or others think of me online because I don't come here for affirmation. I know who I am and what I'm about and I lay it out. If that makes you hate me then so be it, you do you.

Also I wasn't being condescending, I am merely pointing out a truism that "there is nothing more expensive than something free". That is all.

@Akriel_Boulve: The word hate never came from me, (and never would). I don't hate anyone, (least of all someone I don't know).

And just as a friendly FYI, "r/ whoosh" is very condescending.

@thecupidstunts: I never said that you did. I used that as the upper threshold for what a person like you could feel about my statements, not that you yourself were feeling that way. It was a counterpoint to your argument that I would not be endearing myself to anyone online by speaking truthfully to my opinions and worldview, by saying that it wouldn't matter to me even if you came to hate me for my statements, because that is not what I am here for. Hopefully that clears it up.

You may find "r/ whoosh" to be condescending, but I do not. Having something go right over your head happens to everyone from time to time. There is nothing to be ashamed about because communication and general cognizance in humans is imperfect. I, and many others like me, merely use it as a concise and snappy attention grabber to let someone know that they likely didn't understand the last statement.

If you find that as being condescending, well that's your prerogative, but ascribing intent when there is none can be problematic. You know what they say about assuming things.

@Akriel_Boulve: Nothing went over my head. I understood perfectly what you said, it simply doesn't make sense in the context of this discussion.

The person in front of me at the Starbucks drivethrough this morning was kind enough to pay for my order. When I pulled up to the window, they gave me my coffee and sandwich and I didn't have to give them any $ because it was already paid for. But following your logic, since it took me time to drink the coffee and eat the sandwich, it wasn't actually free, right? We both know exactly how that sounds.

I almost never put people on blast in public forums because it gives me no pleasure to insult or demean someone, but for future reference, being clever is more than just using big words, (anyone can access an online Thesaurus). You need to also have wit and nuance, so as to not cross the line into condescension or arrogance.

Since, as you indicated, time is money, (and you seem intent on wasting mine with nonsense), you'll be getting my bill directly. 😉

@thecupidstunts: No you clearly don't understand and your analogy proves it.

What you are discussing in your analogy is something you wanted that you were already going to buy. In fact you say that you were already in line with your order in place for the item and someone just came in at the last step and paid the bill. That is not accurate to this situation here. What I am talking about is something that I never wanted, but was given for free. As such, this situation is more akin to someone standing on the street corner with a box of free puppies.

If I don't want a puppy, but someone hands me one for free, then that is a HUGE cost sink, despite being free. Similarly playing a multi-hour game that I didn't want to play or letting it crowd my already overcrowded steam library means that there are actual costs to something that is ostensibly "free". Then there is also the issue of the guilt trip. They are giving this game away for free in order to elicit donations to a cause. As such, anyone who takes the game has a sense of obligation to at least consider the wishes of the person giving the game away. It's an effective tool to get people to open their wallets, just look at free samples that are given away at grocery stores (at least pre-COVID). The sample is free, but it inevitably leads to more sales which is why they do it. That is the meaning behind the old Japanese saying that "there is nothing more expensive than a free gift".

I think you are projecting a bit my friend if you think I am "just using big words" and pulling up a thesaurus when talking with you. I don't even really know what words you are referencing, but this is my standard vernacular. Perhaps the sense of condescension and arrogance you are projecting onto me is because of a heretofore undiagnosed case of hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia (the fear of big words)?

In any case, offense is only ever taken, never given.

Have a nice day.

The LGBT dynamic in this game isn't profound, which actually I do enjoy as I do think LGBT characters should be made like real people and not a tokenist representation that makes their status their entire development. It's more accurate and helpful representation to us to be seen as people, not as some inherently special person, just a person.

But the thing is, that entire point is moot when it's made free specifically FOR that point at the beginning of Corporate Pandering Month. It entirely undermines proper representation simply to garner more publicity on a game that didn't sell so well. It's not about the representation or LGBT rights at that point, it's about exploiting the community and its allies for money.

By the way, so does making an article about it.

@epic_poke8: yo stop being so frail about it. its a business move that aligns with a the political agenda of the company. The success of Pride is built on aggressive awareness and not subtlety.

@nilsdoen: I disagree, I feel it creates and/or perpetuates a negative stereotype about LGBT+ persons that frequently becomes a point of contention not only with opponents to the pride movement but proponents as well. It's heavy handed exploitation, not a new practice, and something that has even been criticized for decades now. The success of Pride is built on OPEN awareness, this is different from being open, this is being flamboyant. The entire idea of using an LGBT+ person as a selling point is where Pride falls, not rises. It's not making us look like people, it's making us look like a marketing scheme.

It goes beyond simply LGBT+ as well, as tokenism, that is, the practice of trying to appeal to a specific minority group (most commonly persons of color) by raising a single representative character of that group on a pedestal. This has been an issue in media since I'd say the late 1960's, where racist and bigoted producers would write off their transgressions by saying "Oh but we actually HAVE a black person! See, look at him acting and stuff!". No, that's not what representation of any group should be, a person is always a person first, not some social/political status.

I'm not being fragile about it, if someone wants to make a negative LGBT+ stereotype, whatever, I won't support them and that will be the end of it, but if they are doing it and saying they are MORE culturally aware and helpful by doing so, I'm going to point out that it's blatantly false, because otherwise you get bigots insisting they are actually good people for supporting borderline propaganda against LGBT+ groups, that is, the practice of using LGBT+ as a selling point.

TL : DR it's the corporate equivalent of "I'm actually not homophobic, I have a gay friend" and making money off it

@epic_poke8: I genuinely disagree your conclusions as I find your reasoning rather skewed to the extreme. However, I ofc see that there is truth to what you say. And I might just have taken a tougher stance against financial exploitation of LGBT community If I was actually part of it.
