Temple Run nets 75 million iOS downloads in 2012

Imangi Studios' endless running game hits new milestone in past year; 40 billion apps downloaded through App Store to date.

Temple Run raced to success in 2012. The endless running game from the husband and wife development team at Imangi Studios was downloaded more than 75 million times in the App Store during the year, Apple announced today.

“We were simply looking to create a game that was fun and easy to play, but once it hit the App Store, the game took off," Imangi Studios producer Keith Shepherd said in a statement.

Temple Run is a free game in the App Store, though players can purchase Coin Packs add-ons from $1-$20. The game is also available for Android through the Google Play store. Sales data for that version has not been announced.

In all, Apple announced that more than 40 billion apps have been downloaded to date, with nearly 20 billion coming in 2012 alone. The App Store has over 500 million "active" accounts, and during the month of December 2012 alone, users downloaded over two billion apps.

More than 775,000 apps are available for iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch users across the world. Apple has paid developers more than $7 billion dollars, the company said.

Clicked the link from the other pointless numbers post about this stupid game. 170 million downloads is a big number but for a free game its insignificant and its not surprising why they have not showed any revenue with those hight download numbers. People will download it just because, play it a few times and delete. I hate freemium crap with not story or investment in development, they are quick throw away BS with disposable IAP scams that target the stupids...it ruined the app store.

I actually don't mind the game. Something something to play when I'm waiting in line or doing sit ups or something to that effect. I can't break that 2mil pt mark.

I found it to be incredibly boring and tedious, but good for them I guess.

Good that it turned out well for them but I downloaded Temple Run, played it for a minute or two, then deleted it. Just wasn't for me. I wish there were numbers available for the percentage of people who used an app for x amount of time. That'd be a far more interesting stat to me.

Cool Temple Run was one of the first games I downloaded when I got my galaxy. Fun way to pass the time when i'm out somewhere. Not sire why all the hate for these portable games? It's like folks be having their heads stuck up their asses.

75 million is impressive free or not, hell some of my favorite youtube videos don't even have that 75 million views. I'm glad the game is going over so well..

I downloaded it played it for a few days and haven't launched the app again. It seems like there are tons of apps like this.

@Incubus420 Most popular apps are clones of flash games found on the internet or other apps.

@KingofCabal Not really. I downloaded Temple Run merely because it was free. I played it I think twice and never played it again. 75 million downloads doesn't mean all those people play it still.

Now if 75 million paid for Temple Run or bought whatever that coin thing is, I would totally agree lol.

i think the "key" word in here is "free" game. However it's stil impressive, not many free games reach that point.

$75 mil downloads...notice how they never give numbers of how many of those people are only FTP and how many actually spent real world money in game....Gotta love the media spin.

@TreFacTor There is no media spin.

75 million downloads is an impressive number, considering that most apps don't pull in nearly as much due to various factors like visibility.

The spin is yours. They were only talking about dowloads and nothing about money spent. Not sure why you added a $ sign.

@Jruggy Well, success is usually measured in how much money you made from a product. I'm not saying I like that, but that's the general view on what is "successful".

@Hurvl It depends on what your goals are. Having that many people download your game is impressive, especially coming from an indie. I would be ecstatic if a game of mine pulled those numbers. Would look good on a resume.

@TreFacTor The whole game is FTP. Money only spent on expansion coin packs.
