Terminator: Dark Fate Flops At Box Office, Could Lose $100 Million

"The blood is still being scrubbed off the walls from those creative battles."

The new Terminator movie, Dark Fate, opened in theatres this weekend--and it came up short. The action movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton, and Mackenzie Davis, made only $29 million at the US box office. That makes it a flop, given the film reportedly cost close to $200 million to produce, according to Deadline. Variety reports that the movie cost $185 million to make, with up to $100 million more in marketing costs.

The site said a $29 million opening for the movie--which was directed by Deadpool's Tim Miller--is a "terrible result" and just the latest struggle for the Terminator franchise. 2015's Terminator: Genisys, which ultimately grossed just $90 million domestically, made only $27 million for its opening weekend in the US.

Now Playing: Terminator: Dark Fate - The Cast and Director On Working With James Cameron

The Terminator movies are made by film companies Paramount and Skydance, and Dark Fate is just their latest poorly performing movie. Their previous release, the Will Smith-starring Gemini Man, also bombed at the box office and is predicted to lose money.

Dark Fate was No. 1 at the US box office this weekend, but its $29 million opening was the lowest No. 1 first-weekend result for any movie since 2013's Ender's Game ($27 million).

Dark Fate was financed mainly by three companies--Paramount, Skydance, and Disney (via Fox). Each company put in 30 percent, with China's Tencent adding the rest. Variety reported that Dark Fate could end up losing $100 million at the box office, though those losses could be mitigated through deals for TV and streaming, along with rentals and other sources.

Dark Fate picked up decent review scores from critics, while the movie received a very solid B+ rating on CinemaScore (which measures audience reaction). If Paramount was trying to reinvigorate the series with a younger audience, that didn't really work. The movie's domestic box office was made up of only 25 percent of people in the 18-24 age bracket.

Behind the scenes, Dark Fate ran into problems as well. James Cameron, who wrote and directed the first Terminator movie and remains attached to the series as a producer, told CinemaBlend that there were "many" disagreements during the editing process.

"The blood is still being scrubbed off the walls from those creative battles. This is a film that was forged in fire," he recalled.

According to Cameron, Miller--the director--wanted more control over the direction of the film. "Tim wanted to make it his movie. And I'm like, 'Yeah, but I kind of know a little about this world.' So I had the matter and the anti-matter version of that producorial experience," he said.

You can see the full Top 10 box office chart below, as compiled by EW.

October 25-27 US Box Office:

  1. Terminator: Dark Fate —$29 million
  2. Joker — $14 million
  3. Maleficent: Mistress of Evil — $12.2 million
  4. Harriet — $12 million
  5. The Addams Family — $8.5 million
  6. Zombieland 2: Double Tap — $7.4 million
  7. Countdown — $5.9 million
  8. Black and Blue — $4.1 million
  9. Motherless Brooklyn — $3.7 million
  10. Arctic Dogs — $3.1 million

Damn shame. Saw it this past weekend was quite impressed. Thought it was every bit as entertaining as T2. People should give it a chance.

People that saw T1 and T2 in theaters are too old. Children 10 years ago only have Salvation and Genisys to base the franchise off of - why would people in the 18-39 demographic even care about Terminator at this point?

The best thing you could have done was to reboot the entire franchise, and even that would have been a longshot. Nobody asked for a woke Terminator. We all know Sarah Connor is a badass, she doesn't need to state it or hit us over the head with a role reversal movie to prove the point.

@CyberEarth: Yep, I think you nailed it there.

It's cool for the younger generation to hate on the terminator franchise - and with entries like "Salvation" who can blame them. That said I don't think Genisys was quite as bad as people made it out to be.

@thereal25: The best part of Genisys was Matt Smith. It wasn't as bad as people made it out to be, no. But it was an entirely forgettable movie, not really worth of Terminator. I'm willing to bet most people couldn't even recall the basic plot of the movie other than "Terminator".

Had it been called anything else, it would have had a bit better reception I think.

@CyberEarth: Fair analysis. I liked Emilia Clarke's performance and the new machines were interesting, but other than that the plot was convoluted and didn't feel very impactful or memorable.

I might be mistaken on this opinion but it seems to me that people don't really go to the movies anymore because of all the other options available - it's not what it used to be.

BUT adults still love to take their kids out to see movies. That's why we see all these kiddie marvel movies being so successful. They're usually fun for the kids and there's enough special effects to hopefully keep the adults from falling asleep.

Well, when you give the middle finger to fans and totally disrespect the franchise by shooting off your main protagonist, John Connor, then what do they expect? That on top of the whole woke reality and Tim Millers rantings to the public and Terminator fans in general. All my family & friends love T1 & T2 and we all refused to watch a pointless movie that will anger us with John Connors death and make the first two terminators and the franchise pointless. Save your money & go see the phenomenal Joker movie. They just killed off another franchise.

Terminator 3, Salvation, and Genisys all preceded this and the studio wonders why it has no more good will or interest from audiences? I don't know why anyone investing in this thinks this is still a viable franchise. Especially now that Arnold is far too old, pack it in and create some other sci-fi franchise.

It's time to accept that the Terminator was a 90's thing and move on.

And it was glorious in the 90's. I understand wanting to tap into the magic of Terminator 2 again.

But you can't. You have to find the new magic now and let that lay where it is.

I personally think the Terminator franchise ended with T2. But they were pretty confidant in this one. Like this headline before release

"

Tim Miller Says ‘Terminator: Dark Fate’ Will ‘Scare the F*ck’ Out of Misogynistic Internet Trolls"

So will the bad box office numbers be blamed on "Misogynistic Internet Trolls"?

IMO, there are some real idiots on the internet, who dont want female leads. I personally dont mind what gender the lead role. If the movie is good, great, give me it, but It rubs me the wrong way taking an established movie franchise and purposely changing out lead rolls to fit some kind of activism. They never really work out.

@xxmavr1kxx: Sarah Connor was always a badass. She didn't need to "lead" a movie to tell everyone that, and she doesn't need to beat people over the head with that to showcase her badassery.

That's the problem with a "woke" movie like this - it hits you over the head repeatedly about how "woke" it is. They always talk about male overcompensation covering for something... this is what happens when you get female overcompensation. Nobody wants a role reversal movie just to have a role reversal.

I found it confusing that they kept touting Dark Fate as 'the best Terminator movie since T2', with the clear implication that T2 was the gold standard that was so good, they decided to take a big dump on it in the first 5 minutes of this movie and then reenact the story with different characters.

Damn, after all the last few movies tanked they still went ahead and spent hundred of millions of $ on it? Hollywood is doing way too well for its own good. But no problem, don't let that stop you from creating more sequels and remakes. Clearly that's what you should be spending your money on. And for any such movie that fails there's plenty that succeed and bring in the money to burn on the failures.

Meh it was an okay film, certainly better then the last few attempts but it was essentially just a rehash of T2. They also need to move away from the time travel mechanics at this point, time travel is tough to do right at the best of times.

I kind of miss the horror/thriller elements of the first film when they actually tried to make the terminators seem kind of scary, now they are just kind of generic action popcorn flicks.

I'd like to see the story actually move forward, for all the flack that T3 and Salvation get, at least they had the right idea and tried to move onward with the story, even if it wasn't quite done correctly.

People on reddit claimed that Cameron is the moron who thought it was good to get rid of John Connor. If true that last paragraph here how he claims to know more about terminator since he made it is BS he single handedly ruined the franchise by going this new timeline and introducing the lamest new characters that no one cares about. John Sarah and Kyle are way way better than supporting Dani, Grace and Sarah

Look, I think people just are over Terminator movies. We seem to get one once every four years at this rate, and each one is just falling flat like the one before it. People are over it. Regardless of whether Arnie stars. Regardless of whether it has Sarah Connor back. There's been so many standalone films that they've tried to scrub out of continuity now, and people are over it.

It would be like if they kept trying to remake Batman, and failed each time. People would stop caring eventually, and Batman would become unprofitable.

@nabinator: They did make a slew of terrible Batman movies. Basically everything after Burton's Batman 2. Granted, I think they made some good bank, but they were still terrible and awful movies.

Then magically, Nolan did a great Batman triology, and everyone was about Batman again.

Go back in time thanks to time machine, protect someone, car chase scene, car chase scene, hide and get stronger, final showdown and win. boring its been done to death. Id love for them to stick to the future war. Salvation had the right idea but executed poorly. A good future war movie Ill be all in on that movie to pay for a ticket

@bigdavex: It rewrote the first movie to neuter Kyle Reese, a straight white male that was the savior of the original movie, to prop up Sarah Conner, a woman. Then takes the former hero of the story, straight white male John Conner, and turns him into the villain. Sounds like a very woke movie to me.

@RossRichard: How is any of that different to the first two movies featuring white men (or at least robots that looked like them) as the main antagonists, T1 killing off Kyle Reese in favor of Sarah at the climax, and then T2 having Sarah as an action chick? Or has James Cameron been secretly enacting a anti-white, anti-male agenda since 1984?

Lol.

It’s funny how every time there’s a reboot or reimagining they always say “this is the first in a new trilogy” or “this is the first film in a whole cinematic universe with multiple sequels, spinoffs, etc...” and every damn time they say that, the first film flops and that’s the end of it. You’d think they would learn their lesson the first 3 times they tried to extend this series that really didn’t need to be extended.

Its just Terminator 2 again but John Connor is a girl now.
and the great action set pieces Cameron did with T2 are now replaced by CGI nonsense. only decent action scene is the truck chase most of you say in the trailer, but even then that HAPPEND IN T2 lol

the only memorable impressive thing i or anyone will remember from this is the great de-aging they did int he first 5minutes. but the first 5 minutes are also at the same time the WORST part because it reinforces the fact that the story was OVER!

and obliviously the numbers at the box office for the last 2 sequels are proving that they needed to STOP audiences are clearly aware that the story ended in T2 and they DONT NEED TO PAY TO SEE ANYMORE. GET THE HINT PARAMOUNT

@alastor529: I for one, have been a fan of the Terminator series since the first one. I'm glad that James Cameron got back aboard the film. Yeah, the new film had a lot of callbacks to the first pair of films, but to me...it helped set the tone of the movie and made it more awesome. I could fully see where the series was going with the whole timeline shift of a new person who rose up to take john's place against a previously unheard of AI. If things were meant to happen they would. Change one thing, and yet something will take it's place. The removal of Skynet let Legion in. In the original timeline Legion could have been a secondary program under skynet. Who can really say? As for the new hero..she could just have easily been one of John's lieutenants in another area at the time. (the ones the TX was hunting till it found John.) By killing John, EVERYTHING shifted. And no, the story was left open in T2. When dealing with Time Travel, the story is ALWAYS left open, even if it looks closed. Sarah didn't realize that and that's why John died.

@Artha_Penn: "And no, the story was left open in T2. When dealing with Time Travel, the story is ALWAYS left open, even if it looks closed."

I think you really need to watch T2 again. The whole point of the movie was the message: "No Fate But What We Make." The characters in that movie thought they were doomed to repeat Judgement Day until they realized that nothing is set in stone and they changed the future by destroying the computer system that became Skynet and the T-800 sacrificed himself at the end to destroy all traces of the Terminators, therefore they changed the future and canceled Judgement Day, so the "door" on time travel in the future was closed because the future where machines and time travel became a possibility no longer existed. T2 did a perfect job of wrapping up all the loose ends in the story, and that's why every Terminator sequel post T2 flopped because they all tried continuing a story when there was no story left to tell.

@Simulator_Shock: Your kind of highlighting exactly why time travel is such a poor mechanic to rely on for telling a story.

The fact that they used time travel to stop judgement day means that time travel has to be invented in that timeline, hence judgement day is doomed to eventually happen, so that they can travel back and repeat the events to stop judgement day. Its like Skynet isn't smart enough to realise it is responsible for creating the events that lead to the resistance and its need to time travel.

Even if we take the idea that by traveling back in time (which is how this new movie suggests time travel works), you create an alternate timeline, you then have to ask yourself, why is Skynet bothering to send a terminator back to change the timeline, for the Skynet that sends the terminator back, nothing would change, that timeline would just continue on as it was. But by sending the terminator back, you now make the new timeline aware of judgement day and the terminators, which would eventually lead to the events repeating themselves in a similar fashion also.
