Terminator Salvation GRIN-ning

Warner Bros. enlists PC GRAW and Bionic Commando Rearmed developer to craft third-person sci-fi shooter based on forthcoming fourth Terminator film.

In November 2007, media startup The Halcyon Company announced the formation of a games division focused on film adaptations. Right out of the gate, the company scored two of the most coveted game licenses of sci-fi cinema: Blade Runner, Ridley Scott's 1982 future-noir thriller, and Terminator, the series inspired by James Cameron's seminal 1984 actioner. Specifically, the latter rights were for Terminator: Salvation, the fourth installment in the franchise that also inspired the ongoing television show Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

No Caption Provided

For the intervening year, little was heard about the Terminator Salvation game other that it was set to launch on "all platforms" alongside the film in 2009. Today, the project resurfaced with the announcement Halcyon is partnering with four other companies to work on the project. Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment (WBIE), the game arm of Terminator film studio Warner Bros., will distribute the game, with unknowns Swiss-based Equity Games and UK-based Evolve games copublishing.

The fifth firm involved with Terminator Salvation is Stockholm, Sweden-based developer GRIN. Founded in 1997, the shop is best known for handling the well-reviewed PC ports of Ubisoft's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter and Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2. It also developed Bionic Commando Rearmed and the forthcoming game adaptation of the film Wanted for the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3.

Though it now has no specific release date, the Terminator Salvation game is described as an "intense" third-person actioner that "complements the upcoming film." Said film is set for release next summer, and will be directed by Joseph "McG" Nichol (Charlie's Angels), and stars Christian Bale (The Dark Knight), rapper Common (American Gangster), Bryce Dallas Howard (Spider-Man 3), and Sam Worthington (Cameron's forthcoming Avatar). Set in the postapocalyptic ruins of 2018, it follows a group of humans righting the robot armies of Skynet, the artificial intelligence that launched a nuclear holocaust to wipe out humanity.

As far as the movie goes i'm with the majority of people, how can you make a Terminator film without the Terminator, they take good films then try and milk them even more, Aliens/Predator another example, leave it alone and stop making rubbish movies, if the movies rubbish i doubt the game will be anything special.

Film wise i thought T3 was pretty good to be honest, T2 is the best but T3 had some pretty great action scenes even if the story wasnt great.. I just think them making a sort of retelling of the original Terminator isnt so good, they should have had arnie in it somewhere.. or waited for him to step down as governor and even if he didnt have a big part in the film it wouldnt be a terminator film without him imo. as for the game, no idea but usually they dont end up too good.

My hopes are never high for movie based games, but this one might turn out ok.Hopefully they'll right the wrong of the last film(awful), and the even larger wrong of the tv show(awfuler).I hope they port the T2 arcade shooter in with this one, as a nostalgic bonus too.

I don't know.. a game, based on a fourth movie (a post-quel?)... T3 wasn't that good. A really great story is "T2 : Infiltraitor" (novel) by S. M. Sterling was what the 3rd movie should have been. Takes place 10 years after T2 and all the characters have aged approprietly. Even explains why the T800 has an austrian/german accent.

I really hope that they dont ruin the terminator series. 1 and 2 are awesome. 3 was ok, but they didnt need to make any more. Now that they have, they have to finish the war, but hopefully they dont just turn it into a pop culture thing that ruins a lot of sequels...ie Matrix, StarWars, Rocky, Indy, etc.... Yea, maybe they are ok movies, but do we really need sequels to everything??? Saw 6, Back to the future 4, etc...

@cmon007: Come on its just nostalgia making you think Batman(1989) was good. Truth is it was bad and so was Nicholson's portrayal of the Joker.

Doubt this movie is going to be good at all because Arnold isn't in it. You can't make a terminator movie without the Terminator himself!

Batman (1989) was pretty good, then by the end of that series they sucked, then Batman Begins happened. Terminator rocked (T2 even more) then T3 stunk, maybe Cristian Bale can make Salvation good.

Warner actually bought the rights of Terminator, and used them to start the TV show and the movie. They are dumping a hella lotta money in to the franchise so I'd imagine the movie will be fairly good. Also Warner Interactive puts out good games. So maybe....just maybe they'll both be good. Then again they could suck. Flip a freak'n coin.

I think the bigger question to ask is wether this new terminator movie is possibly going to be any good (Terminator 3???). This is possibly going to end being a game tie in that is better than a really bad movie.

So should I start being affraid of how bad the game is going to be, or is this going to be one of the few times that a game will be as good or better then the film it's based on?

I can't say it with complete certainty but I think he means that Grin are developing the entirely new Bionic Commando game rather than they developed the re-armed version which, you're quite right, is out already.

Video Games based on movies have never been very thrilling to play, BUT to Terminator's credit...they did make that really BAD @$$ arcade game back in the 90's if anyone remembers. It was later ported to the Sega Genesis and they released that gun controller along side the T2: Arcade Game too, now that game....was AWESOME and could suck you in for hours.

I remember when Activison put "Terminators3 War of the machiness" in the hand of Clevers. I'd never heard of them..and they delivered one of the worst, most ameture coded games I've ever seen.IT WAS DIRE.Just check the reviews the PC version got on Gamespot. Well at least THIS games being put into a the hands of a good studio with a good track record. They have good talent at GRIN with experience and tools for large scale, big budget FPS games development. And more important'ly a reputation for excellence on such projects, one that would not want to taint. I look forward to what they come up with.

nate c-12, i certainly hope the idiotic comment you left is not representative of your overall intelligence, or else you could be considered mentally challenged. the game was FIRST ANNOUNCED in nov. of '07, so even before that initial announcement, the games had already been worked on. this is not rob zombie's t. rex movie where promo stuff is put out before the script is even written. this is a calculated move by an allegience of companies. how the hell did you assume that they just now started working on the game? the main f***cking character model was most likely completely rendered mere moments after christian bale was cast. to write this game off is retarded. it's not a movie tie in. it's a multimedia tie in. if they can remain faithful to the source material and all of the secondary media (tscc and comics) then we just might have the only movie tie in since riddick that will be worth a damn. i hate when people complain about stuff that isn't even made. i complained about tscc, but now i never miss a show. the movie itself is shaping up to be dope because for all the d-bags that think mcg is a d-bag, go read the latest ign article on the movie and see how much of a fan he is of the franchise. and for all the flack that the t3-based games catch, i still play rise of the machines, and although it's no halo 2, it is servicable at the least. sci fi nerds, go ahead and write this movie off, as well as star trek's latest movie, but we true terminator fans have nothing but the best to expect from a game and movie that fills in stories that were previously confined to kyle reese's recollections.

The Terminator francise appears poised to plumb new depths. They should have quit after Judgement Day, or left James Cameron at the helm.
