Tetris poised for PS3 debut next month

Astro, I have to respectfully disagree. I've been playing since the original NES version, and my vote would go to either "The New Tetris" for the N64 or "Tetris DS". For those unfamiliar, "The New Tetris" (not to be confused with "Tetrisphere", which was fun in its own right) offered the major tweak of converting self-contained 4x4 regions to silver or gold blocks which multiplied what a line-clear would be worth. Also, the 4-player vs. mode was incredible fun. And as for Tetris DS, it's been the best implementation of internet-based multi-player in the series.

I REALLY hope they have the breakaway pieces mode like in "The Next Tetris" for the original Playstation. That was the best version of Tetris ever - the multiplayer competition mode where you had best of 5 game matches was cool too.

@Petch 1984 -- I remember the rockets too! Didn't they have different ones, from small ones to the massive Apollo ones to even the shuttle?

Yeah, stupid Tetris Mini. I like PSN a lot, but they should clearly label which Minis work on the PS3. I was excited to see Tetris, inspected the Mini, and saw nothing saying it was only compatible with PSP and not the PS3. So I bought it and learned after the fact that it was not compatible. I called customer support and complained but nothing came of it. It was the first time I purchased a Mini, and because of my experience, the last time. Here's hoping for a good Tetris game on the PS3.

@shawn_ofda_dead ok point taken :) I just dont see the fun in playing a game that has been re-done about 50 times. Why not just make a time machine?

So that's why the Tetris Mini won't work on the PS3.

@theKSMM What are you talking about? Modern Warfare, The Darkness, Riddick, and Burnout Paradise (to name a few) are not only in 1080p, but look amazing! Your comment's about 3 years too late.

The PS3 finally gets a game it can handle at 1080p. Shocking.

5.1 surround sound and 1080p is necessary for tetris. I need to know if I'm getting a vertical line, not some pixelated crap floating down the screen. Playing tetris at a young age was hard cause all the pieces looked the same and lacked textures. I'm glad to see this problem will be solved. Also it's good to know if a block is dropping from behind me with the 5.1 surround sound.

I remember playing the gameboy version up until the rocket took off - no one believed me that there was a rocket in the game...

Yeah because people would prefer tetris over the cross game chat update, I don't really care if I seem ungrateful but why is the chat thing taking so long? it's been in Sony's 'pipeline' for way too long.

Why do some news sites say that this is out on PSN right now, yet Gamespot says it will be out in December??

Do they know that they are actually competing with Lumines Supernova by releasing this? I sure hope they do. Because the screenshots make it look like it's going to absolutely blow.

I paid good money for (Tetris mini ) on my psp... why do i need to pay again to play it on my ps3 .... Money Grab...

@parkurtommo The point of video games is not to kill things. Go hunting if that is your intention. I am really surprised that it has taken this long for such a classic game to show up on the next gen consoles. It won't sell a whole lot to the younger "i p0wn n00bs" crowd of gamers, but it is a sure fire cash in terms of the legions of old school gamers that like a good challenge. Thats assuming that they don't already have a copy on their phone, computer, or other system that they play regularly.

make it for psp not for ps3!, and surround sound for what this is just a waste of hardware! tetris is good for handheld not consoles!

No mention of online PvP? Surely that couldn't be too hard to integrate.

I'm really not interested in this, tetris is for casual mobile gamers and for 40 year old nerds. Seriously, can you kill anything in tetris? I didn't think so, that is the main purpose of video games, to have fun crushing your opponent. Just like all games of any technology.

They should do really wierd stuff instead of following the same 2d design, maybe make it 3d (not completely ofcourse) and then have really radical twirly designs.

Lousy double dipping. There's no reason that the $10 PSP mini version can't be played on the PS3 other than the fact that they want to sell me a much more expensive PS3 exclusive version. And the high end visuals and sound? Tetris on the Gameboy is just as good as any other version. Graphics don't matter for Tetris.

This is great, but 1080p graphics, for Tetris.... really? Just no need whatsoever. They could still be on an old Gameboy dot matrix screen and I'd enjoy the game just as much

This is the game they wanted us to rebuy if we wanted to play on our PS3s instead of just letting us play the Mini on our PS3 like they should. Sure hope the 1080p is worth the extra.

Hmm... Tetris is best suited for a handheld in my opinion.

honestly this kind of thing is better suited to the wii, and some of the stuff the wii gets, ahem ffIV after years, better suited to the ps3

This will be a good addition to any gamer's library - if not for themselves then for their friends/family who are more casual gamers. I do think its a bit silly to do it in 1080p, though - sorta overkill for a puzzle game. Ah well, no big deal. Probably be better if they used vector based graphics since those will look good at any resolution...

@slowdrum13 "Some PSP minis are playable on the PS3, but Tetris is a notable exception." I think it's about time they added flare to Tetris. I understand that it is a timeless classic that doesn't need gimmicks, but after playing Space Invaders Extreme on PSP, it would be really cool if they did something like that with a new Tetris game, instead of just releasing the same exact game over and over.
