TGS 06: Coded Arms: Assault Hands-On

Konami takes us into the cyberworld with its new sci-fi first-person shooter.

TOKYO--Announced and shown in trailer form for the first time back at the 2006 Electronic Entertainment Expo, Konami's sci-fi-themed first-person shooter, Coded Arms: Assault, is on the show floor at this year's Tokyo Game Show in playable form. It's an early version of the game, for sure, but its smooth looks and interesting sense of style appear to set it apart from other games in the same genre.

The Coded Arms series began on the PlayStation Portable as a fairly basic first-person shooter that took place inside cyberspace. As you fought, you'd see Matrix-like effects that give away the fact that the whole scenario is unfolding inside a computer. That same style is used in Coded Arms: Assault. Each time you fire a shot, hit a target, blow something up, or destroy an enemy, you'll see what are presumably bits of code flying off of everything. When you destroy an enemy, he falls to the ground, but a glowing outline of the standing enemy remains, hanging there for a few seconds before fading away.

Despite the setting, Coded Arms: Assault does have a sort of real-world look to it. The one-level demo being shown at TGS opens in what appears to be a Japanese subway terminal, then takes it out onto the street, where you'll fight some more. Before long, you dash up a fire escape and find a man with garbled computer Matrix effects for a head. Hitting the circle button decodes him and ends the level--and the demo.

Throughout the demo, we encountered two types of enemies. The standard soldier has a sort of pointy head and is armed with a basic assault rifle. The second type is a larger, melee-focused enemy that looks a bit like an ape. He rushes at you, swinging his arms when he gets close. To fight off the enemies, the demo gives you a pistol and an assault rifle. You can zoom in for a better aim on the action, and you can also toss grenades. Rather than track your health, the game measures your life force as the strength of your "connection." You can also acquire protection, which is the game's equivalent of armor.

On the control side of things, Coded Arms: Assault uses a very standard button setup. The analog sticks are for moving and looking around, the triggers are for firing and tossing grenades, the face buttons control things like reloading, opening doors, and jumping, and the D pad changes weapons. All in all, the controls are just fine.

This game is powered by the Unreal engine, and the visuals have a good, weighty look to them, though the frame rate and load times are in need of some optimization. Of course, with the game not hitting stores until 2007, Konami has plenty of time to fix all of that stuff and deliver on what looks like a pretty promising first-person shooter.

Thats make the game so special. I dont know why they need blood in FPS. The concept is very new. You are shooting at the digitalize enemies. Its so cool.

Why is everyone flaming all these TGS games? they're all for the most part still in development and are just showing one and two level demos. Sure this game probably won't be anything ground breaking but what's wrong with just another fun game? People want more innovative games like Half-Life and Halo(Halo really wasn't the best game ever, it was just the best Xbox game for a while, and honestly there wasn't much completely new about it) but Half-Life came out in the late part of the last decade, when graphics hardware and in game animation was just becoming workable to a degree that didn't look horrid for a game to use, so of course any good looking game with scripted events was completely awesome, and innovative. However, now it's all a common occurrence for a game to be visually striking or have a healthy share of scripted events to fill in the story during play, and if they do it well then there are always the people who just bash it and say "They're just copying Half-Life blah blah blah". What was innovative once isn't innovative anymore, and when you're working with the same types of hardware and a set control scheme, it just isn't practical or fair to think every game can just reinvent a genre.

PS2 was impressive with all genres of games except fps genre, because it requires more processing power that PS2 doesn't have. Hopefully, with PS3 RSX and the 3.2 GHz Cell processor; the genre is being well established in PS3 ground, with Resistance :FOM as a flagship title. For killzone and this game, I think the developers want to change the public opinion about them, as if they are trying to say : " Hey these games are actualy great, with PS3 power" Anyway I am still optimistic to some degree about this game, as it still in early stages of development

@ NECROCHILD313: Small studios with potencially innovative ideas don't get a chance from large and known publishers like EA/Sierra (to name a few) because games, nowadays take a lot of $$ to make. The industry acknowledges these problems and even they say that if the industry continues this way, it may fall upon itself because gamers will be going away because of lack of innovation and a dependence of sequels, et.c.. The XNA tools are (accoding to Microsoft) supposedly an approach to tackle that problem... Years ago, games were developed because that was the hobby of the devs back then (sort of like the reason behind MODs today)...until the evil marketing guys stepped in. They know sh*t about making games and publishers always screw developer studios with the $$ that goes over to them...can anyone remember the original C&C? It was developed in a house garage, and it was great...now look at what we've come...pretty graphics...and no gameplay innovation... Ok...I think that's enough ranting.. I hope I answered your question though.. -Ghost

Another vanilla FPS. What happened to the Half-Life 1s, Halo 1s, and Classic Dooms of the FPS universe?

i dunno why nintendo and sony use certain franchises: lets take a look at metroid, nintendo is using it to attract the fps crowd while i think that alot of fps players like the non sci fi look better. and sony: killzone&coded arms: both of em werent critical hits yet these are the fps you choose to be your next killer aps?
