TGS 06: Crackdown Hands-On

Microsoft reads us the riot act with the Japanese version of its upcoming open-world action game.

TOKYO--Microsoft and Realtime Worlds are teaming up to deliver Crackdown, a Grand Theft Auto-like mission-based action game that takes place in an open world and puts you in the shoes of a secret agent with bionic abilities that improve as you play. So if you develop your character's strength, you'll eventually be kicking cars out of your way. You'll also get better with weapons, develop the ability to jump extremely high, and so on. Placed into an open-ended, mission-based world, your secret agent appears to be able to get into trouble pretty easily, but he's also got the tools to get out of it.

The version of Crackdown we saw was the Japanese-language version, which will be published under the name Riot Act. We got to try a few different things, including a timed checkpoint race. Taking on a checkpoint race makes glowing gates appear for you to drive through. Also, it looks like your best time in these races will be recorded and sent in to an online leaderboard, as taking on the challenge caused an Xbox 360 gamer picture and another player's best time to appear on the screen. The game will have you fighting off gang members, and one of the tasks we completed during our brief time with the game was climbing to the top of a high building and eliminating a gang leader known as Juan Martinez. After doing so, the game paused for a bit and it sounded like taking that guy out severely neutered his gang's presence around town.

Crackdown uses the power of in-game physics to its benefit in a lot of different ways. Cars explode nicely, but your ability to pick up and toss other large objects, like cars or light posts, definitely makes the game more interesting. It also comes into play when simply driving a car, as the cars seems to have a tendency to flip over pretty easily when you crash into something. The game has a control scheme similar to what you'd expect from a GTA or Saint's Row-like game. When you're in a car, the triggers are used for gas and brake. Hitting Y will get you into and out of cars. When you're out of the car, the game behaves like a standard third-person action game. The camera does a good job of following you around, there's an onscreen reticle for your weaponry, and so on.

Crackdown also stands apart from the rest of the open-world action genre with its visual style. The game cel-shades a lot of major elements in the world, which sort of gives the whole thing a comic book feel. As for sound, the game appears to follow the GTA route as far as music is concerned. Every time you hop into a car, the name of an artist and track appears. Unfortunately, due to the loud volume present on the show floor at TGS, we were unable to get a good sense for the game's soundtrack and other audio elements.

Crackdown is due out in early 2007, and so far, it's looking pretty sharp. Look for more details as they become available.

I am looking forward to this title. I will wait until it is released, I have purchased or rented it, and have experienced it myself to pass judgment. Let's all say that together, now.

MY TOKYO GAME SHOW REPORT (I live in Yokohama) The Xbox line was so strange! People were waiting an hour to play Dead Rising which has already been released. So, here's my quick rundown after getting in the Crackdown line 5 times and playing over and over. NEGATIVES: **The camera seemed to "loose", moved a little too quickly at times **Jacking cars can be difficult. (sort of a good thing but ultimately frustrating) **Crossing the street is very dangerous! (In the middle of a firefight I must've got run over by speeding civilians about 3 times, wasting alot of health) POSITIVES: **Having an "Agency" vehicle makes you feel pretty badass. The little bonuses that each car has are fun. **Interactivity is really astounding. I was able to pick park benches and lightpoles and even dead bad guys and throw them at enemies. I had seen this in videos but it's really satisfying to actually do it. Leaping across rooftops and sniping bad dudes from across the street was also satisfying. NEUTRAL: Mission structure, is there any real story? The demo let us drive around and just kind of "find" Kingpins. Almost felt like an MMORPG where you just stumble upon things. NEWS: Apparently the black dude that we see in screen shots isn't the only playable character.....either that or one of the screens brightness was turned up so high he looked like an asian male. OVERALL: In the end the more I played this game, the more I liked it. Even watching other people play was fun because we all played differently. The stats with levels and point system is really quite fun too. It gives you that same feeling you get of "leveling up" in RPG's in the middle of a firefight. At first your range of action: shooting, driving, super-strength is pretty basic. But with XP comes the ability to precision aim, barrell roll your car, and pick up city buses, etc..... You throw a guy off a roof, follow him onto the street below, jack a car and plow it into a gang roadblock and watch al l the XP float your way, knowing that next time you'll be able to do something even more spectacular.

Sounds pretty fun, atleast you get to be a good guy for once. Sounds to me like Deus Ex mixed with GTA mixed with Hulk. Since you get to upgrade yourself, it's mission based GTA style, and you push cars out of your way and jump really high.

So, another GTA based action game. Lets hope it follows the path of Saints Row and the Godfather. That is, it's actually turns out to be a decent game.

I'm looking forward to this game. This and Bioshock are the two 360 games that I am anticipating the most. Hopefully it will fulfill my expectations like Saint's Row so aptly did.

I was really looking forward to this game for a while, then lost interest in it. I hope they get more time with it in the future though. TGS is'nt exactly ideal for hands-on reports.

I don't mind games using the format GTA started. As long as the title is great. Just play Saints Row, it pretty much fixes everything that was wrong with the GTA series.

Why on Earth Does it Keep Saying Early 2007 When everywhere else I see 10/10/06 for the guide and 10/16/06 for the game. I wish someone would get a second developers interview.
