Master games.

If you love to play on PC, this was a good year, as 2017 offered mastercraft executions of every genre mentioned above. Each yielded an ambitious spirit, pushing forward its respective genre with fresh ideas and mechanics, while also expanding upon what has come before. In no particular order, here are our picks for the best PC games of 2017.

Now Playing: Top 5 PC Games Of 2017 - Best Of 2017

Total War: Warhammer II is one of the most well-crafted strategy games in PC gaming history. With the second installment, developer The Creative Assembly has expanded the mechanics of the first, while still retaining its sandbox structure. At the same time, the game better utilizes its narrative, tapping into the decades of lore that the Warhammer franchise now consists of.

This sequel adds a sense of dynamism and urgency to a series where many players feel safe slowly creeping across the campaign map, knowing that even if their front line falls, their home cities are stoic and safe. In addition, the scale and enormity of its combat is unparalleled, especially in the Mortal Empires campaign, which combines everything from the first game with everything you see in Total War: Warhammer II. Battles are not long, arduous, drawn-out affairs, nor do they end too quickly for you to appreciate the size and force of what you're seeing.

The addition of the Vortex campaign and a wider variety of quests far exceed the experience of the original. The game also expands the formula with numerous spells and new marching monsters and units, and the resulting concoction is a strategy game that both Warhammer and Total War fans are guaranteed to love.

Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice

Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice leverages the strengths of video games as a medium and delivers an experience that is unlike anything else released this year. It's a bold game that explores mental health--specifically psychosis--through the lens of a character-action game wrapped in Norse mythology. The game tackles an important and often misunderstood illness, and allows you to better understand it through visual and aural presentation.

Developer Ninja Theory has a long history of developing action games that are fast and fluid in movement while also being mechanically deep and complex, but for Hellblade, the developer scaled this back somewhat. Playing Hellblade can feel rough and sluggish, but this feeds into the mind-state of its main character, Senua. Returning from self-imposed exile, the young Pict warrior grapples with her inner-demons as she attempts to save the soul of her lover, Dillon.

The act of fighting against demonic apparitions feels like a struggle, as Senua summons every ounce of energy in her body just to keep moving forward, one step at a time. And all the while voices in her head pull her in different directions, some guiding her, while others undermine and belittle her. The result is an experience that feels raw, unsettling, as well as frustrating and disempowering. It can be difficult to play but, ultimately, it's also a unique and enlightening experience.

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard marks a return to form for Capcom, which reconnected with its survival-horror roots to deliver a Resident Evil that is both modern and faithful to the series' legacy.

The game casts aside the third-person perspective for first-person, and in doing so, ratchets up the nerve-wracking tension throughout the campaign. Crucially, however, it leans on the genre pillars that it both established and popularised; bullets and healing items are in short supply, and enemies require strategy and a steady hand to take down.

From the early moments of breathlessly running around the Baker home, hoping and praying not to cross paths with Jack, the psychotic patriarch of the family, to the nail-biting cat-and-mouse game in Marguerite's bug-infested cabin, and the intense fight for survival at the end, Resident Evil 7 is edge-of-your-seat gaming at its finest.

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus never lets you forget who you're fighting, and why. Nazi brutality is on full display, from the blown-out, irradiated remains of Manhattan to each of the characters, who all carry mental scars if not physical ones. The far-future technology of the Nazi regime is exhilarating to partake in--high-powered laser weapons are exciting to use, after all--but it's also a grotesque display of their ruthless subjugation of all corners of the world.

That said, a tongue-in-cheek tone reminiscent of Inglourious Basterds strikes the right balance with the game's incredibly heavy subject matter. The New Colossus has a completely bonkers storyline, and it's elevated by satisfying Nazi-killing action and a self-awareness of its own dark humor. It also manages to make combat exciting without becoming a power fantasy--it's straight-up difficult, and its mechanical, heavily armored enemies can seem impossible to take down at times. But regardless of whether you take a stealthy or guns-blazing approach, you'll be rewarded with a thrilling fight once you do emerge victorious.

The most memorable thing about The New Colossus, though, is its direction. Carefully choreographed cutscenes give more gravity to an already great cast of characters, and the timing of specific moments (all spoilers) makes them all the more impactful. Wolfenstein's tense gameplay elevates this further by giving you the power to truly resist--and come out of each battle ready for another fight.

Divinity: Original Sin II snuck up on a lot of people, with buzz before it's release just simmering under the surface of the gaming community. It wasn't long after the game released that this wonderful RPG was on everyone's lips. Fascinating stories of how parties and individuals alike were solving problems and conquering dungeons, secrets and tidbits and little "did you knows" were passed between wannabe adventurers like excited children in class.

The game's story is compelling and involved, but it always encourages you to make it your own with a multitude of opportunities to experiment and choose your own path. Quests can be completed without blindly following objectives, murders can be solved by eating flesh, traps can be thwarted by talking with dogs, and quest givers can be spoken to by communicating with their ghosts. It's the stuff CRPG lovers adore, dialed up to 11.

By far the biggest attraction of Divinity: Original Sin II is the incredible amount of freedom you get, but it helps that the game is built upon a foundation of expertly designed mechanics. Being able to build up your character's abilities and equip them with numerous weapons continually fuels the desire to experiment and customize your party.

Divinity: Original Sin II is a massive accomplishment. It embodies everything that fans have come to adore about CRPGs, accommodating any and all inclinations you have to craft your own adventure. If there's any game you should play on PC this year (or in the years to come) it's Divinity: Original Sin II.

GameSpot will be unveiling its picks for the best games of the year throughout all of December. Check out our Best of 2017 hub for even more.

I'm waiting for 2018, there should be way better games for next year, such as: Far Cry 5, Metro Exodus, Skull & Bones, The Last Night...

The only new game I bought in 2017 was NBA 2K18. What killed the game was all the microtransactions, but is still lots of fun. I play it daily. Then there's BF1 expansion maps, but that's just add-on stuff.

I read Sonic Mania was pretty good, want to eventually get that one. That one could've been on this list.

If Divinity II, while I've not actually played it, won game of the year over Zelda BoTW I wouldn't be shocked. I've played the first and while not totally my cup of tea I can appreciate what an amazing game it is.

Zelda is, for me, the greatest game of many many years but Divinity was also a truly remarkable departure from your traditional rpg fare and a return to the great games of the past.

I really hope Div II comes to PS4 as I gave up on PCs a few years back.

So, 4 out of the 5 best PC games in 2017 have actually a PlayStation 4 version aswell. What happened to PC? Will you guys keep supporting league of legends, dota, cs, warcraft and minecraft your entire life? Nice, that is why all we getting on steam are clones of these genres and this is why 80% of the playerbase is on those boring kid games.

Yeah warhammer was the relevant exclusive it seems, as is the only one making it to the top. But how many more warhammers? 20 already released at this stage? Come on, this platform is a joke right now. People only building PCs to play pubg and CS. We need good exclusives ffs. Laughable year, while I watch stuff like horizon, persona, zelda or mario odysey on consoles, smashing all the awards. Ridiculous generation. Every PC gamer I know plays League of legends, dota, cs or pubg as their main game.

@castlewhisper: "blah blah blah....I'm jealous of the master race blah blah blah"

There. I fixed your post. I'll also add that neither myself nor any of the PC Gamer's I know play any of the games you mentioned (League of Legends, dota, cs or pubg...not even sure what the last three acronyms stand for), though obviously many do.

Most of us are too busy playing awesome games that require a little depth of thought beyond what a joystick is suited for. And when we do play a title that's also available on the PS4, we prefer to do so on a PC platform whose graphics and performance aren't severely limited by hardware that gets refreshed only once or twice a decade (and wasn't all that great to begin with).

Anyway, I'm off to play XCOM...you should try it. It's a great game.

(Unless you try and play it with a joystick on a console)

@castlewhisper: warhammer total war and what you are thinking of as warhammer aren't even close to being the same game. Also, the lists only consists of 5 games, and you still can't how many are exclusive to PC. Horizon and Nioh where great games, but i played them through once, never returned, can't say the same about either divinity or total war.

@castlewhisper: I think part of the reason why PC gaming is still around is that the majority of the games PC gamers enjoy are not games on this list. Stuff like Stardew Valley (originally on PC), Stellaris, Crusader Kings II, Mount and Blade, Pillars of Eternity (originally on PC), The Long Dark (originally on PC), Kerbal Space Program (originally on PC), and countless simulator games are all examples of stuff that typically originate on the PC. This is because there are no platform licensing barriers when developing on the PC so games like "Minecraft" can get made without worrying about paying for the XBox or PS4 license (even though they are pretty small now). Once they see a profitable game they push to the more expensive platforms. Some, which are incredible games, never push to the consoles though.

@manu_pt: Got a link for that? I can't find anything to show when DOS II is coming to PS4 or Xbox One. It was over a year after the PC release before DOS had a console launch.

By the way DOS and DOS II getting launched later on console is nothing to with Sony or MS and everything to do with Larian being a small studio with limited resources. It's also a fully featured "gold" game on release, not early access.

One of the worst years for PC gaming that I can remember. Our platform is getting less and less relevant exclusives that push the hardware boundaries. My GTX1080 only gets stretched on some ubisoft/EA reskjned console port, wich I don´t appreciate at all.

I remember the old times of Crysis 1, Quake, DukeNukem 3d, Soldier of Fortune, Black&White, MDK, Exhumed, Stalker, etc when PC had exclusives that used the latest available hardware technologies and almost forced us to upgrade the graphics card! Now all I see is Early Access indies, Moba, RTS, and twitch shooters on 10 year old engines CS copycats. What is happening with this industry?

I hope 2018 brings a great PC exclusive triple A title again... miss the good old days. Anyway, my PC top 5:

1- Evil Within 2

2- Nioh

3- Northgard

4- Sonic Mania

5- Hellblade

1 PC exclusive. Northgard. We need companies to invest again on our platform and show the world what PC hardware is capable of. Bruteforcing Assassins Creed or Star Wars from consoles at slight higher resolutions running on the same console assetts doesn´t cut it for me.

@manu_pt: I don't doubt you feel that way but for me it was one of the BEST years.

Total War: Warhammer II alone has given me several hundred hours of crazy fun and I feel like I've barely scratched the surface. Haven't even had time to play Divinity which I'm also sure I'll love.

I suppose if I had ALLOT more time on my hands I might complain about the QUANTITY of outstanding PC-centric titles, but I don't so all I care about is QUALITY and it's been a good couple years in that regard, IMHO.

Wolfenstein 2 and hellblade is surely good pc games this year.

hellblade is something exceptionaly done well.

Wolfenstein is pure fps fun ,single player done perfectly right with story, difficulty ,smoothness and character.

If someone has not played these two titles then its big miss.

Yet none of them appeal to me.

Wolf 2 would have but then I'm too bored of the cliche Nazi-shooters. Make something new (i.e. not vs Nazis, Zombies, etc.)

As for RPG, I'm only into Sci-Fi RPG like Mass Effect and Deus Ex.

Based on the fact that Endless Space 2 is the ONLY game released this year that I found enticing enough to buy right away (and I'm having a great time with it) I'd say that it should be in this list. Amplitude is continually improving it too, which shows an ongoing conviction to make it the best it can be, something that lots of other developers would do well to emulate.

I've tried a couple of the Total War demos and I thought the strategic part was awesome but found the real-time battle system to be too chaotic as well as too complex to be effectively managed in real-time. If that same complexity was turn-based, I'd be all over it like a rash.

Destiny: Original Sin 2 is high on my wishlist, but I'm seriously skeptical about the inclusion of Hellblade, Resident Evil 7, or Wolfenstein II in this list. The descriptions don't say they are innovative in any way. In fact, they pretty much say that what they do has been done before.

@Moondrake: Man, just because a game is the only game you've purchased this year it doesn't necessarily place it on the list xD. I don't have experience with the game so i can't offer an informed opinion but plenty of people loved the games you aren't so sure about. Opinions differ between people for a reason. Nothing here is objective.

@Bahamut50: That's all I was doing... offering an opinion. And the reason I think Endless Space 2 deserves to be on the list is because it has become an exceptional game, not because it is the only one released in 2017 that I've purchased.

With Wolfenstein II, there isn't anything mentioned in the write-up that hasn't been done before, so why is it noteworthy?

And for Pete's sake... Resident Evil 7? What could possibly be so incredible about the seventh frickin' iteration of the same game? The write-up says it is a 'return to form'... which means it is doing what it successfully did before. Uh... whoopee?

In both cases, I feel like we would be better served if recognition was given to games that were well done AND innovative in some way. When iterative, 'been there, done that' games are the ones that get continually recognized, it's no wonder that AAA developers never take any chances and only make what what they've made before.. The only response I can muster for either game is a giant yawn. :)

I just finished Divinity: Original Sin 2 and I have to concur it is the best, most absorbing game I played on PC this year. 125 hours (just on a single play through!) of top notch old skool RPG entertainment. Combat never got old, the story never got old, the characters never got old (I took Lohse, Beast and Sebille as companions). It is indeed 10/10, but certainly not for everyone.

Does anyone at GS have a PC outside of the one they use in the office? They seem to be all over PS4 all the time. Senua def deserves to be on this list, but they put wolf 2 on almost every list, and it was the worst fps that came out this year. Where is PUBG on this list? i understand its early access but come on.

@mugg1n10: GS gave it's reason for waiving PUBG from any GOTY year a couple of days ago: due to it being in a beta state it will not be considered the full game and therefore not something which can be considered for GOTY 2017. The cut-off for 'entry' was the start of December.
