The Acolyte's Bite-Sized Star Wars Episodes Are Getting Really Annoying

The Acolyte is a good show, but it can't get any rhythm going with these sitcom-length episodes.

I have been cautiously enjoying The Acolyte--through six episodes, I think it's really good, actually. But as a TV viewing experience, The Acolyte has gotten supremely irritating because each episode is so bizarrely short. All of them come in under 40 minutes if you subtract the "previously on" segments and lengthy end credits--and each of the last three came in at or under 30 minutes. This is fast becoming the biggest gripe about this series, because it feels like each episode ends jarringly just when we're getting into it.

This isn't a new problem for Star Wars, since the first season of The Mandalorian had a similar issue. But those were self-contained stories, with Mando and Baby Yoda going on a different adventure each week. As the live-action Star Wars TV universe grew from there, the episodes generally got longer. While there are short episodes of Andor, for instance, that show feels like it constructed its episodes with whatever length made the most sense. That's also generally been the case for Season 3 of The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and Ashoka--they had some long ones, and they had some short ones, and episode length stopped being much of a topic for a while.

Warning: There will be various spoilers for The Acolyte, through Episode 6, throughout this article.

The Acolyte is different, though, and so those converstations are now starting up again. Episode 3, the longest episode of this series thus far, ran just 37 minutes minus the credits. Episodes 4 and 5 are tied for the shortest at 27 minutes each, and this week's sixth episode clocked in just under 31 minutes. But as Gandalf once said, it's what you do with the time given to you that matters, rather than the amount of time you have. The issue isn't the length itself, but rather the why of it: is this episode 31 minutes long because the filmmakers and producers decided that that's the right length for it, or is it 31 minutes long as the result of some sort of arbitrary mandate from the corporate overlords?

Obviously, we don't know for sure why these episodes are like this, but I'd guess it's the latter because Episodes 4 and 5 have the vibe of a single episode that was cut exactly in half. Episode 4 saw every main character travel to Khofar looking for Master Kelnacca, and ended when they all finally met--and then Episode 5 was about the fight that ensued. Put those two together, and you get a single, hour-long episode of television that works as a complete chapter in a larger story. Future viewers will be fortunate to be able to watch those episodes that way, but those of us who watch live--aka the people who are going to determine the public consensus on this show--are being forced to deal with these awkward, week-long intermissions right in the middle of the episode's plot.

This latest episode gave us a new instance of this structural weirdness, thanks to Master Sol declaring to Mae that he's finally going to reveal the true story of what happened to her and Osha's witch coven 16 years before. Then the show cuts to Osha, who puts on Qimir's sensory deprivation helmet and seems likely to receive a vision from the Force of the story Sol is about to tell. And then the episode is over. leaving us to wait another week in frustration that this episode concluded right as it was ramping up.

Despite the short length, it's not even as dense as it could be. Every scene involving that little furry guy Bazil, for example, is a completely unnecessary waste of time, and we get a lot of Bazil this week because he's apparently the main character in Sol and Mae's story. Throwing in a cliffhanger, then, by having Sol dramatically announce that he's going to tell the true story of what happened with Mae and Osha's witch coven (but not until next week), is just obnoxious. Even moreso when you remember how intriguing this episode's other plots were. Specifically: Master Vernestra venturing out from the Jedi Temple on Coruscant on a quest to track down Sol, and Osha and Qimir doing a super interesting remix of the Rey/Luke portions of The Last Jedi. But even these plots feel truncated. A half-hour isn't enough time to do much with three parallel storylines.

With each episode lacking in substance somewhat thanks to the short lengths, the annoyance builds--we're constantly being teased, like every episode is just a lead-in to the next thing, but every time we get into a little bit of a groove, we arrive at another tease that points to something else. Even for those of us who like this show, that kind of thing undercuts our ability to have hope that it will continue to not suck.

The saving grace of The Acolyte, as with Andor, has been its characters--they play like real people, rather than cogs in a plot machine the way folks on The Mandalorian and Ahsoka frequently do. The performances have been great--Lee Jung-jae might be delivering the best Star Wars has ever seen--and the Jedi have a pretty different sort of vibe than we saw from them in the movies. The character work and performances have kept this show above water thus far, but The Acolyte is on a tricky path as we near the end of the season.

With only two episodes left in the season, creator Leslye Headland and co. still have to both show us what happened with the coven--this will be next week's episode, presumably--and also bring the present-day story to some sort of conclusion. It doesn't feel like we're anywhere near the end of this, though, particularly if we're spending half of the remaining two episodes on a flashback.

For now, I still think The Acolyte is a good show, and the complaints about episode length will be less of an issue once the full season is out and it becomes a binge show. But with these bite-sized episodes preventing The Acolyte from building any sort of momentum or rhythm, I'm struggling to have any faith that it will stick the landing over the next two weeks. I think Headland could definitely pull it off, and I desperately hope she does--and that the powers-that-be allow her to--because I've watched way more than my fair share of disappointing Star Wars in my life.

There is nothing good about this. The writing is horrendous. Mae wants to kill the Jedi, then she doesn't and wants to surrender, then let masquerade as my sister, Like a Jedi master wouldn't know his old padawan, to one who is not. A not-so-Sith Lord, one no one has ever heard of, kills like 7 Jedi and that fact is taken very nonchalantly by the Jedi. No, mass summoning of Jedi to go and hunt the not-so-Sith down. then they come up with maybe Sol did it. None of this makes any sense, it's like the Jedi are bumbling idiots. This is trash, just on a story basis, whether it was star wars or some other genre show

@felipe1: Ehh, it's not the worst Star Wars. It's not great either, but Disney's Star Wars content has been muuuch worse than The Acolyte.

@mogan: it’s definitely not an 8/10 in any version of reality. I think 4/10 would have been fair.

@plustwenty: If I was going to put a number on my opinion of the show so far, I think I'd give it a 6. It's fair. But everybody gets to decide for themselves.

Disney is literally hiring actors, actresses, directors, and writers based on skin color, gender, and sexuality. (Disney exec even admitted to this recently) Yet, someone criticizes a show because it’s terrible and gets called a bigot. The show is terrible because it’s terrible. It gets lumped in with rings of power because both shows are such disappointing additions to massive beloved franchises.

I remember when shows were over 20 episodes long. Some shows would be very slow to have things happen. Then they started making 10 episode shows and the pacing was much better. Every episode significant things happened. Then they started making 8 episode shows at the same pacing. Then 8 episode shows and barely anything happens, like when they used to have 20 episode shows. Then they started reducing the length of the episodes and still barely anything happens.

It's skimflation (look up the term). They are giving viewers less and less while charging more for it. In my nearly four decades alive I've noticed this trend. Nearly every product and service nowadays is watered down and costs too much.

Soon we'll be watching tiktok length episodes and corporations will justify it by saying our attention span has evolved to be shorter, so it's the best thing to do for the viewer, and they'll be charging more than what they ever charged.

@lucasrezende9: clearly none of you undetstand the point of my comment.

My opinion as an old school star wars fan is that these new Disney Star Wars shows/movies (except for mandalorian season 1 & 2, Andor, and Rogue 1) go against what the original creator of Star Wars, George Lucas, had intended to be the point of the Star Wars universe.

If you like it, good for you, everyone’s entitled to their own opinion. But this woke garbage isn’t real Star Wars and I can guarantee that George Lucas would agree with me and the millions of old school fans who share the same opinion.

@staarboo: You millenials are adorable. My generation was in their 20s and 30s when we saw Phantom Menace, a Lucas movie, and we DESPISED it. Our neckbeards bullied the actor who played JarJar out of the industry, bullied that little Anakin actor to the point where he developed schizophrenia, and made Lucas plead with the fans directly.

I remember the exact moment I walked out of the Thursday midnight showing of PM with my friends. "Wesa Goen Underwater, Okeyday?" Anyone else want to hit the bars instead? “Yeps” all around.

Episode 3 does not redeem two bad movies in a row.

Star Wars hasn’t been “real Star Wars” for a LONG time, buddy. So accept it for what it is, popcorn sci-if made for little kids and their nostalgic adult parents, or move on to something made for your age group…like Dune.

@staarboo: "old school Star Wars fan" lol I also have watched, read and played a lot of Star Wars content my whole life as well and I did get the point of your comment. You can definitely have your own head canon. But you can't state that is not Star Wars just because you and other people don't like the show. Geroge Lucas has actually said that he likes the Obi Wan show for example and has shown support to Filoni on the Mandalorian and Ahsoka shows. Maybe he dislikes this one, but we can't be so sure. And don't get me wrong this show is far from perfect, but for me it has some good things about it like Master Sol and The Stranger, but that's just my opinion.

@lucasrezende9: Anyone old enough knows the feeling of goosebumps when the initial scrolling Star Wars screen starts and the John Williams music cues. You knew you were about to watch something special. I understand what they mean by this is not Star Wars because it sure doesn’t feel like it. Star Wars shows/ movies should be treated much better. Think if hbo owned Lucas films instead of Disney. Star Wars would be in a much better place. Also, Lucas is not going to bash any of these shows. He has a ton of money invested in Disney now. Why would he ridicule anything? It doesn’t help him. Lastly, obi won show is awful but it is far superior to this terrible show.

@plustwenty: The chase scene with Lea running from her kidnappers that everyone sites as Disney’s toxic touch to SW is exactly Lucas’s sort of thing.

“ Everybody said the same thing about 3P0, that he was irritating and we should get rid of him. When I did the third one it was the Ewoks: 'Those are little teddy bears. This is a kid’s movie, we don’t want to see a kids’ movie.' I said: 'It is a kids’ movie. It’s always been a kids’ movie.'”

Directly from Lucas himself. And I got news for you kid…the little children who are watching these movies today will be propping them up as the best Star Wars content 20 years from now. You’ll all the proof I need of that theory, because your prequels are BAD movies. Bad acting, bad CGI, bad dialogue. All of it.

@Baconstrip78: are you suggesting I am referring to the prequels? episodes 1 and 2 are terrible. 3 was ok. I was not referring to them. Lucas directed those prequels after a 20 year hiatus. (He didn’t direct 5 or 6)He then made comments similar to what you stated trying to defend phantom menace which was awful. I doubt that many people truly believe the prequels are superior to 4-6.

You mentioned dune. dune is awesome. I know it’s classic novels but I give 75% of that credit to the director who is amazing. He could make anything good. Imagine a Villanueve Star Wars movie.

Also, are you suggesting that acolyte is a good show? As bad as the prequels were, I still think they are better than acolyte.

Phil Owen gave this show a score of 8 and now complains. It is not anywhere near an 8/10 and it never was. How did this show get so many good scores from critics? This show caused me to finally cancel my Disney subscription.

I am trying to understand the movie review rating system on gamespot. This was an 8. oppenheimer and civil war (not the marvel movie) both got a 9/10. Oppenheimer was a masterpiece so I can get on board with 9/10. However, civil war…9?? Acolyte 8? How?? I don’t understand.

@sebb: maybe you’re right. Gamespot is awesome at reviewing games but movies and shows have been all over the place. I wasn’t sure if this was due to money, political views, or some movies were owned by same company. If there is not an agenda, I would encourage Mr Owen and other gamespot entertainment reviewers to utilize a rubric.

@Vaildez: Sadly, the first episode is awful. It does, however, pick up from then on. But with the first episode being so bad, it basically lost a sizeable audience early on.

You can see it in the trends of the reviews, which are steadily getting higher.

Basil kicks Mae while she tries to repair the ship after resetting Pip. Sol tasers Mae. The other jedis get to the planet where the jedis got murdered. Vernestra takes her bdsm lightsaber out to cut a moth in pieces.

Ironically for me, it's the Star Wars show I having more fun (the backlash is helping, have to admit) just behind Andor (by far the best).

Its a bad show, clearly would be way better if all the episodes were released at once. The 30m episode is a moment breaker, it takes you out of the flow of the story and the cuts make little sense.

But is different from all the other star wars shows, the fight are the best thing I ever saw is star wars (episode 3 rival that in a different way),more brutal and technical than the other types of choreography.

The acting is crazy good and crazy bad... LOL... the only problem I have with the show, besides the 30m episode is the twins... I really dont care about their story... but the other characters... I´m on board.

@sebb: The best way to consume this is to wait the release of all episodes and experience them all at once... that would be my choice, but you can´t do this in an era when spoilers are everywhere.

Especially with star wars... between the "bad" people, the opportunists and the "not so clever" people... it's spoilers everywhere...

@lucasrezende9: I know, but then they moved all that to Legends, and I figured nobody would think it was a good idea to bring the whip back in an official capacity. : \

There was all manner of weird and dumb stuff in the old, expanded universe content. Those 80s and 90s era Star Wars novels and comics were all over the place quality wise. But it's one thing to read about a lightsaber whip in paperback pulp and another to see somebody with a budget and an officially canon property putting that stuff on screen.

@mogan: What’s the issue with the lightsaber whip? It’s nonsense but no more nonsense than anything else.

Don’t you find it even more bizarre that a Jedi needs a light saber at all? If they can levitate a star fighter out of a swamp with their mind, why can’t they use a fraction of a fraction of that telekinetic force to effortlessly crush a man’s heart or brain stem?

Vader can pull a star frigate with his mind but has to put so much effort into force choking someone 5ft away?

Nevermind guys still wearing armor against blasters the armor clearly doesn’t defend against. It’s all just hokey fun nonsense for kids and if you take it too seriously, the problem is YOU, not the content.

@Baconstrip78: My issue with lightsaber whips is that they look goofy. Lightsabers look cool, but the whip in The Acolyte kiiinda looks like a glowy sex toy and it makes even less sense than a laser sword. The fact that Star Wars is all fantasy and comic book science doesn't mean there's no point at which is becomes dumb, and for me, the lightsaber whip is on the wrong side of that point.
