The Batman Receives A PG-13 Rating
Batman's next cinematic adventure won't be R-rated, although the Matt Reeves-directed film still has violent and disturbing content.
The Batman has received its official rating from the Motion Picture Association, revealing that the Matt Reeves-directed film will be a PG-13 experience. On the MPA bulletin, the group noted that The Batman contained "strong violent and disturbing content, drug content, strong language, and some suggestive material," although not enough adult content was present to warrant an R-rating.
This shouldn't be too surprising, as the majority of live-action Batman movies have been rated PG-13. Dark Knight Trilogy director Christopher Nolan got around this hurdle with his films, as he focused on dark psychological themes through his films.
The only exception to this was Zack Snyder's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, as the PG-13 theatrical cut of that film was bumped up to an R-rating for its director's cut on home video. On a positive note, Batman Oreo cookies are technically rated for all ages because justice doesn't discriminate when it comes to people.
While The Batman can leverage its age restriction to reach as wide an audience as possible in the pandemic era of cinema, recent trailers for the film have painted it as a gritty and grungy take on the caped crusader. The film stars Robert Pattinson as the Batman and Bruce Wayne, Zoe Kravitz as Selina Kyle, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, Paul Dano as The Riddler, and Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot.
A prequel Batman TV series is in development for HBO Max, while former dark knights Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton will reprise their roles in The Flash movie. Affleck previously mentioned that he "finally figured out Batman" when shooting his scenes for The Flash, as compared to the negative experience he had while working on Justice League.
