The Daily Show Lampoons Trump's Violent Games Roundtable

"Look man, the truth is, many countries around the world have figured this out."

President Trump hosted a roundtable discussion with games industry stakeholders and critics yesterday to talk about the potential impact of video game violence. Like most high-profile political events, it was fodder for the late-night comedy circuit. The Daily Show's Trevor Noah took a swing at lampooning the attempt to draw a link between video games and real-life tragedy.

The centerpiece of Noah's argument focuses on Japan, which is the third-highest consumer of video games in the world, but suffers dramatically less gun-related crime than America. In fact, in 2015 the country had only one gun murder. "I'm sorry but if you're the only gun death in a country of 120 million people, you probably deserved it," Noah quipped.

The meeting on the whole was described as respectful but occasionally contentious. The White House opened the meeting with a montage of violent imagery from several video games, removed from context, including Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Fallout 4, and others. Media Research Council president Brent Bozell suggested tougher regulation on games, and Rep. Vicky Hartzler (R-MO) said afterwards that such regulations should also apply to other media like movies.

The industry's side, represented by the ESA and ESRB among other leaders, refuted the connections. They had an ally in Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) who pointed out there's been no evidence that the Parkland shooter was motivated by playing video games. He did advocate increasing measures to make sure parents are aware of resources like the ESRB to monitor their kids' entertainment.

It's one thing to argue about how much or how little gun control should be done in different situations. What I don't get is the "let's not talk about it" argument that people bring up.

Every time there's a mass shooting, certain politicians and news groups (you know who they are) refuse to have a serious talk about the topic and say things like "now's not the right time" or "that would be inappropriate to the families of the victims". These mass shootings seem to be happening on a weekly basis. When is that appropriate time going to be?

OK so video games shouldn't be blamed out right sure

Problem is you lot saying gun control and other measures but history - recent history has shown people can still go mental with out guns

All they need is a driving licence and a van

@Flyin3lvl: So with knives and any other tool. The difference is in the potential damage. You can compare the numbers and the difference is quite clear :)

Of courses limiting access to guns won't completely eliminate violence, but guns are made specifically to kill. Yeah, there are other ways to kill people, but you don't see many mass casualties that don't involve firearms. Even mowing down a bunch of people in a large vehicle is relatively ineffective.

@moonco: Not likely but yeah, that's a pretty insensitive joke. If anyone from the victim's family watched the clip, they'd probably be pretty upset.

@nibbin1191: They promoted people like Anita and the rest of her crew who basically made the exact same argument, Video games lead and contribute to toxic masculinity which lead to school shootings, she even made a tweet stating there was a link

@musalala: "Video games lead and contribute to toxic masculinity"

Was back in the day when I saw her videos. But I'm sure she did point that toxic masculinity was REFLECTED on games, and spread through it. Tied, but not exactly the same. Would like to have a source for that, do you have a link?

And sorry but, Game journalists? All the "videogames cause violence" generally comes from non-game related media (generally low-level sensationalist one) Game Journalists generally rant agains that notion and pretty much call the idea of games making us violent to be something dumb. what do you mean exactly by that? :/

@restatbonfire: Younger kids these days are really thin skinned. Every thing seems to hurt them. Really need some to understand no one really cares about feelings when they grow up. Life is tough.

@Triton: LIke you said, because now day parents teach the extreme positive in their kids. When anything negative happens in their lifes, they see it like a disease they have to get rid of. However, the negative experiences are the ones that helps us to grow as a person, and through those experiences we learn how not to screw up. So, when something bad happens to these kids or adults they dont know how to respond and sometimes they take really drastic measures.

@restatbonfire: Not offended, just pointing out that the guy is a douche for saying it. Get off your anti-PC horse. I only used "what if" because I don't know exactly who died. Everyone is someone's son, daughter, father, or mother, etc.

You know what, never mind. You're totally right. You convinced me. Think back to the last time you or someone you care about was victimized or wronged. You both totally deserved it. /s

The fact that they continued The Daily Show post-Stewart is baffling.

I'd love to see actual ratings #s before / after.

It's like comparing it to pre-Stewart, for that matter... What's-his-name... [which is exactly my point]

Pretty much right. The president's wasting his time with this PR stunt and Bozell and Hartzler are p***ing in the wind. The public won't swallow what they want just because of their asinine attempt to link games, movies and real guns. I've been playing violent games and watching bloody movies for years and I've no intention of replicating any of what I've seen or done there in reality. Nor do 99% of the population.

Try something else Mr Trump. This doesn't even rate a 'could do better'.

@cyberjordan: Well the defeated left using the kids at this school to push their agenda down America, he has to do something.

If he does something the defeated lefts media rips him, if does nothing the defeated lefts media rips him. Just glad he is a guy that does what is best for the country, which is what he was voted in to do.

Japan has the highest IQ per capita than any other country. The Whitehouse, the exact opposite. Trump supporters, well done. You gave some random, unqualified, uneducated dude the most important job in the country and everyday we all have to read and hear about how awful and stupid he is.

@sticktaler36: I mean, yeah, the Dems ****ed up backing Hillary as their candidate ... but it's not like there weren't plenty of other Republican options and a couple other Democrat options that the voters looked at and said, "No, I'd rather have Trump."

@sticktaler36: Somehow both of these statements are true.

However, if you think $hillary would have been nearly as bad as Trump, you watch too much FOX News and Alex Jones.
