The Division Ad Skewers Destiny, But There Is a Problem - Report

A recent ad that claimed The Division "blows Destiny out of the water" might not tell the whole story.

Ubisoft has pushed out a new advertisement for The Division with a press quote that claims Ubisoft's third-person shooter is better than Bungie's Destiny, a game it is often compared to. The ad, reportedly being sent by email, quotes games site GameZone as saying The Division "blows Destiny out of the water."

No Caption Provided

It is a bold claim, but it appears to be taken out of context. The actual quote comes from this GameZone news story that references The Division's beta outperforming Destiny's. As Ubisoft said last month, more than 6.4 million people played The Division's beta, compared to 4.6 million people for Destiny's.

The writer of the story, Tatiana Morris, told Kotaku that Ubisoft asked for permission to use the quote, but never told her "in what way or form" it would be used.

"I think in the future, in an effort to be more transparent with gamers and our audience, I will ask how the quote will be used and where it will be placed."

The other quote featured in The Division's ad, from IGN, refers to The Division as "best new franchise." As Kotaku points out, IGN said this at E3 2013 referring to new franchises that were announced at that year's show.

GameSpot has contacted Ubisoft in an attempt to get more details. We will update this post with anything we hear back.

The Division launches on March 8 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. It arrives with major expectations, as Ubisoft recently said it could join Destiny, Watch Dogs, and Assassin's Creed to become of the biggest new IP launches ever. You can watch the game's launch trailer here.

In other news about The Division, Ubisoft has outlined the game's free and paid DLC, while the company has also confirmed exactly when The Division's servers will be switched on.

This is something that Publishers and movie studios have been doing for years and all of a sudden it's a big deal. Gamespot must be struggling to find something to write about. I mean do people actually use these quotes to decide if they are gonna buy a game or not?

Wow, the same company as Watch Dogs. The game with awful driving controls, suspect shooting mechanics, tedious missions and stupid stealth gameplay. That's some company to possibly be in.

Destiny certainly deserves a swipe or two, but... I mean really? Ubisoft is one of the last companies that should be criticizing other people's games.

Man everything surrounding this game is suspect and I really wanted this game to be something special but I fear it's going to be another huge let down. I mean I got bored walking around the same destroyed New York fighting the same enemies in the Beta..

@goodgamesguy: Was already gutted visually compared to the E3 reveal footage; just like Watchdogs, so it's a letdown even before it's released.

@goodgamesguy: I can see what you mean about this game after the closed beta i wasnt really impressed, but i think i had expectations that this game would be literally pants exploding amazing the hype train is strong with this one, then i went into the open beta knowing what to expect and liked it a lot more, it is risky though, i think the main game will be fine but i just hope it doesnt turn out to be a grind fest like destiny, if they handle the replay value and end game content well, i think it will be a keeper.

@goodgamesguy:

You do realize that there was more content locked than available in the beta, right?... Your comment is like saying, "I really wanted Super Duper Racecar Game to be good, but it got so boring racing the same car on the same track over and over again in the demo..."

Destiny feels like a generic shooter to me, much like the Halo series. Could never get into Destiny's poor attempt at a story.

I'm gonna feel sorry for all the thousands of people who pre ordered the digital game.only to find out its a souped up version of watchdogs.granted I do think this is the game bored destiny players are waiting and if ubisoft don't listen to the players they will fall like bungie.when you completely have to find a 6 player team to advanced more in any game people will get bored trying to find people and quit playing the game.just look at destiny.I have seen so many people who's been playing since the last update and they still can't get over 300 level.shame on you bungie

They're actually harder to compare than you'd think anyway. Destiny is more shooter oriented, The Division is more RPG oriented.

@Wintereich: Both have bullet sponge enemies. Both take you to missions based around the world, allowing you to join up with others. The only difference i see is crafting and adding things to your weapon. Oh and 3P and FP.

@imajinn: Everyone complains about the bullet sponge thing, its an RPG you cant have one hit kill weapons or realistic shooting, that would take the RPG element away. The point of an RPG is you start out with a stick and end up with super mighty sword of much stabbing +10 at end game, if stick was equal to Stabby sword there would be no progression, what Ubi should have done is not add Tom Clancy to the title it should have just been the Division, TC usually comes with realistic type shooting mechanics

@imajinn: they feel very different. Destiny doesn't really have bullet sponge enemies like the Division does, aside from bosses. The Division is much more tactical, from what I've played so far, Destiny is more just make sure you don't die. I have high hopes for both going forward to be honest.

@comeandgetme: Primal is totally different from FC4. Yes, yes, they recycled the map, but I didn't realized until I saw the news everywhere. The weapons are different, the map is less cluttered, you can tame, command and ride animals, you have a village that you can upgrade, it has a more detailed skill tree, no co-op or MP crap (a plus for me) graphics are better (especially at night and sunsets/sunrises), it has some investigations a la Witcher 3 and you can control an owl to tag and attack enemies. Actually, I'm having more fun with Primal than with FC4.

@Mantan911:God, what a stupid comment. I don't care about Ubisoft, EA or other publishers. All of them have good and bad games. This game is particularly receiving a lot of hate from people who never played it. If people who never played the game can say it sucks why can't I, that put 50 hours in it, comment about why I like it?
Oh, no, if I like the game I should be a Ubisoft fanboy... gosh.

I'm probably one of the few people that thoroughly enjoys the fact that Ubisoft's marketing team took a shot at Destiny... even if the headline is misleading. I don't ever recall another game company doing this.

All The Division has to do to rival Destiny is to offer more meaningful and less tedious content. It won't beat Destiny in raw gunplay, but The Division didn't play any worse than Mass Effect (people who say ME's cover mechanics were better are bonkers), so all it needs is a good amount of quantity to be competitive.

@tsmech88: Destiny has superb gameplay for a shooter, nothing else comes close in that regard, but there is so little meaningful loot and story is pretty much nonexistent, and most of the story that is there is on the bungie site as grimoire, even the Destiny Podcast has more story as audio than Destiny itself.

@tsmech88: Now, hold on. Destiny PLAYS great. It's everything else that's the problem. It's not accurate to describe it as a bad game. More accurate to say it's a disappointment.

@Barighm: your comment oozes disdain for people who don't like Destiny. I want to insult you and tell you to get off your knee's, but since you were respectful, I will tell you that I agree; it does have good mechanics, but it is clearly a video game/casino/pickpocket game made to suck your wallet dry.

You'd have to be very naive if claims like those actually influence your likelihood to purchase a product or service.

Too bad the game actually sucks.

Could've been something great; instead it's a watered down cover based third person shooter with lite RPG mechanics.

It also looks far worse than it did 3 years ago; because Ubisoft likes to do that to their games now.

@DAOWAce: Wait a sec. Guns have way more customization options than Destiny, which are purely random, and there were more abilities, each with 5 variants per ability. It's hardly exceptional but way deeper than Destiny, and possibly Mass Effect.

I don't see this as a big deal yea it's a rather big claim but obviously just because one person feels that way doesn't mean you will. If someone were too buy the Division solely because of a quote that said it was better then Destiny it would be there ownfault if they ended up not liking it.
