The Division Dev Says Dark Zone Balancing "Definitely a Priority"

Ubisoft is "looking at all of those things at the moment," developer says.

As part of a recent update to The Division, Ubisoft disabled the Trained Talent item and made a number of general tweaks to experience gain and drop rates for items and currency. Not everyone was happy with the changes Ubisoft made, and now the developer has said more updates in this area may come later.

Speaking today during a community livestream event, Ubisoft Massive community developer Hamish Bode said the studio is aware of concerns players have and will adjust the game accordingly in the future.

Things like Dark Zone balancing is "definitely a priority for the development team," Bode explained, going on to say that the studio is "looking at all of those things at the moment."

He stopped short of making any specific, official announcements, but made it clear that Ubisoft is listening.

Also during the event, Bode was asked about what kind of high-level gear players can expect down the road. He teased, "There are surprises to come."

The Division launched on March 8 and broke Ubisoft sales records. GameSpot's The Division review scored the game an 8/10.

"No matter how frustrated I grew with the game's semi-indestructible enemies or its repetitive leveling structure, I absolutely could not stop playing," reviewer Scott Butterworth said. "The world was too engrossing, the loot was too enticing, and the campaign was too gripping for me to simply walk away. I stopped caring about the game's flaws after the first few hours and proceeded to lose myself in obsessive stat optimization and cooperative gun battles. The problems (and frustration) never disappeared, but I was more than happy to play through the pain."

For more on The Division's critical reception, check out this roundup of review scores. In other news about the game, some possible DLC locations have been discovered.

they need to buff LMGs and ARs big time imo - like increase armor damage value. as of right now, SMGs are the bread and butter of all because of criticals. I can drop a yellow NPC in DZ06 in mere seconds with a pimped up vector or midas, but the caduceus and liberator take 3-4 times as long...

If you loot gear from high areas you can go back to the lower areas to extract it without fear of being killed by enemies

What about the trivial issues like the fact that you cannot bind the Enter key because you guys thought it's okay to hardcode keyboard configs in 2016?

Games from low budget independent studios allow full keyboard customization but not Ubisoft, apparently.

Darkzone has been fantastic. Yesterday I achieved "manhunt" mode by mistake and survived.

I died to PvE npcs and dropped loot that I earned. I spawn in the camp and I get a message "x" has stolen your loot.

For some reason I was emotionally attached and I wanted it back. I saw the extraction call, rushed over just before he hooked up his loot and killed him and got my goods back.

Turned out he had a lower level friend up on a crate, which met the same fate and now I'm rogue.

I forget how many people came after me but there was a new skull icon filling up after each kill and I finally filled it.

Manhunt mode activated survive 5 minutes without dying and there is now a huge target on the map. ANY combat halts the timer. I'm running around low on ammo as it is and I'm down to a minute and two npcs decide to engage me, they also die after furious heal spams and kit usage. I'm down to no ammo on primary and 6 shells on shotgun and I finally find a safe spot to rest in a parking lot.

The last 5 or 10 seconds were some of the most intense seconds I've ever had in gaming just watching that clock. I succeeded and got a reward (700 something DZ currency). I didn't care that was so low because I had such a blast.

Tldr: had an awesome DZ experience hope you all have similar encounters.

@RicanV: I don't get it either, I lost some of my loot yesterday and first thing I did was go after the guy who stole my stuff! Why do we care?

@suicidesn0wman: I do the same thing. I think it's the principle of it. "I worked hard for that and I'm not letting anyone take it!" It's so much fun. Especially when you're with a group. One person loses their stuff and we all go get it back, lol.

@quis89: Hah, yeah, I attacked a guy my first night in there for taking my friends items. I didn't even think about it, as soon as I saw him running towards the items I lined him up and shot as soon as that shit disappeared. Funny part is, he never retaliated, and eventually we were working together.

Dark zone sounds ok on paper.. But something about the mode I don't like.. Hmm maybe getting shot in the back or constantly getting trolled - or needing to troll others to get the good rewards.

Did a real life troll come up with this trolltastic mode?

Yea you better fix the DZ. If you die there, you lose half your DZ level and you lose a whole level and half your money if you go rogue which is even a harsher penalty thanks to whiners complaining on Ubisoft forum that it's too hard. By doing this harsh penalty, PvP is highly discouraging and people don't want to go rogue anymore which was one of the selling point / appeal of the game. You literally don't have much to gain from going rogue. Also, they need to rework enemy spawn points as they sometimes spawn next to you and one shot you.

@berserker66666: Every comment you have made about this game would indicate you have no idea what is going on in the game at all. I seriously do not believe you own the game.

I lost 792 exp last night when I died while rogue at level 14, it wasn't even 10% of the exp needed to get to lvl 15. Non-rogue I may have lost like 150 exp, which is like 1%, so yeah, you're just making it up as you go along.

@berserker66666: how do you lose a half level and lose a whole level?

I am with you on the meat of your argument though, rogue status should just go away altogether and leave it to players to either battle it out or work together.

@civilenginerd: In DZ, if you die, you lose A TON of XP, half a level's worth and if you die as a rogue, that's a full level lost. That's 1+ hour's worth of grinding down the drains. They need to reduce these penalties.

@berserker66666: You have literally NEVER played The Division, have you? You absolutely do NOT lose a half levels worth of XP when you die as Rogue. You do NOT lose a full level. It's one thing to have an opinion on the mode. It's another thing completely to continue to throw around false "facts".

@berserker66666: I died both ways and lost some xp but never half a level, let alone a level. The best way to go into the DZ is with a group otherwise prepare to lose some xp or maybe a lot if you die repeatedly

At level 10, I dipped my toe into the Dark Zone for the first time last night. It was a mixed experience. It's irritating as hell when some asshat ganks you for no reason other than to be a jerk (I didn't even have any loot on me!). On the other hand, there were a couple moments that were pretty amazing. At one point, I decided to try and extract and came across a few guys fending off a horde of enemies. I flanked the enemies for them and helped them with their extraction. It was a pretty exhilarating experience that could never be scripted.

@jcharp: It's those moments when you come up on another group though, and you don't know if they're going to attack or go about their own business peacefully that can be intense, even when nothing happens. Both groups going in opposite directions, but you can't take your eye off of each other just incase, then when you get far enough away you weave in and out of the abandoned cars just to make sure.

Sure, it sucks when you run into someone who's just there to troll the lower ranks, but it's also just as fun to join the group of people chasing after that prick too!

@jcharp: I thought all of the clutch moments that make combat a rush would start to dissipate when I got to end game, but it just keeps getting more interesting. Really getting that rpg high. I think I would recommend players slack off a bit on side quests and main missions so they have more than just loot driving their end game until the incursion update. After the PCX nerf however no one should be worried about a major lack of content when that time comes, you'll be loot chasing for ages and challenging missions require a lot of progression in that area - challenging being a primary source of PCX income.

Like the initial reviewer said, I'm stuck as well. This game is just so wicked fun to play. It's like Diablo with guns and a Destiny framework. It works amazingly well. I can NOT wait until the DLC is released for this game. Something I very rarely will ever say about any game. It's super fun, the story is solid, the action on point and the guns, damn, the guns just rock. The ability to mod abilities, add your perks, upgrade your gear, etc, just makes everything that much more exciting. It's a fantastic entry into this "new" way of doing MMOs.

I am a level 10 and have not stepped foot in the dark zone. Is there any benefit to doing so if I am not level 30? wouldn't I just get slammed by higher level players?

@NorseLax09: Dude, I wet my feet at level 10... yeah, you'll occasionally get ganked by high level players, BUT, sometimes - and I found, more often than not - people will chip in and help you out because you're level 10...

For me, it was worth the rush of trying to extract gear which was pretty much always better than what I was carrying while being swarmed by purple enemies. Plus, once extracted, I tend to sell any stuff I get in there that I don't like - it's surprising how your credits will fly up ;-)

Failing that, get some slightly higher level buddies to go in and act like bodyguards for you...

@NorseLax09: You would be thrown in with other lvl 10-14 players, only thing is the PVE in the area will all be a higher level than you, however they do drop a lot of blue items at that level.

@NorseLax09: It all has an element of luck, id say give it a go but try and stick to your levels area, ten is the minimum really to go in but you wont lose anything for seeing what its like, sometimes you go in and everyone works together as the enemies are tough and thick, sometimes some gimp will kill you for loot, just watch other agents in the extraction zone, i had one guy wait until the helo was there and then shoot me in the back, i made sure he got his but some dodgy players fill that area, its fun i do recommend, it can be a tense fun time in there

@NorseLax09: the advantage at that point is to grab some better gear for your character. It helps quite a bit in the SP missions if you can get a better gun and armor. At level 13 I have full blues with all gun perks unlocked and a sick marksman rifle that will one shot most red enemies with a headshot, and 2 -3 shot most purples that are level 13 and lower. wouldn't have any of that if i hadn't dealt with the mess that the DZ is right now. plus its better to be well geared out by the time you hit 30 so you arent gang banged by 30's in the DZ when you are level 30 and level 1 DZ.

@NorseLax09: Level 30 is inevitable. Don't be afraid to get your feet wet before then, so you know what to expect when you get in the deep end. You may even come away with some fresh loot for your level - yes - the 30 cap is when it gets real though.

@NorseLax09: It will adapt to your level. I recommend you start venturing in the DZ whne your lvl 30. Gear you extract will matter by then. Right now it will only stop your progression towards level 30.

You can, however, go in, find some decent gear and continue your journey to lvl 30.

@NorseLax09: No. Just like out in the regular zone, the areas are cordoned off for certain level gaps. The loot in the DZ is worth the price of dying every now and again. Not for nothing, I just dinged 18 and was running solo since 10. I accidentally went Rogue once when some a$$hat ran into my line of fire and he was a few levels higher than me and shot me dead. Thankfully, I had just made an extraction so I had nothing on me. I've easily seen hundreds of other players and most run solo, like I was, or will get you to group up in teams to take on bigger and badder bad guys. Grouping is very much worth it in TD as everyone in the group will get access to the drops, not just 1 person. It's a very nice co-op way that Ubi implemented that works so well. That's not to say someone won't kill you. However, being of such low level, most people running the DZ are looking for higher level gear, something a level 10 won't have. I've yet had anyone go Rogue by shooting me. Not once yet.

@NorseLax09: The enemies are pretty tough at that level. I went in at around 10 or 11, visiting the gas station and construction site building from the beta. It took some effort to kill enemies even with a guy helping me.

Yellows win destroy and over run you. Purples are reasonable solo, unless they swarm your extraction site. Run. I did a lot of running and practiced avoidance.

Two rogues gave me grief. Later, I accidentally entered DZ06 West. No hope to kill anything in there.
