The Division Multiplayer Beta Dates Confirmed, Xbox One Players Get in First

Not much longer to wait.

[UPDATE] Ubisoft has now shared new details about what to expect from The Division's beta. Writing on its blog, Ubisoft said the beta will start on Manhattan's Chelsea Pier, taking players through "early story-driven missions that establish your foothold in New York." The beta will also let players try the PvP Dark Zone.

The only way to guarantee yourself access to The Division's beta is to preorder the game. However, Ubisoft announced today that you can sign up for a spot on the waitlist for a chance to get in.

As suspected, the closed multiplayer beta for The Division will begin later this month, Ubisoft announced today. Xbox One players will get the first stab at it when the beta goes live on Microsoft's console on January 28. The beta will then be made available on PS4 and PC starting on January 29.

The multiplayer beta will run through January 31 across all platforms.

To guarantee yourself a spot in the beta, you need to preorder the game, though it's unclear if there will be any other ways to get in. We'll let you know if any other means of entry become available.

The upcoming Division closed beta follows a technical alpha period held on Xbox One in December.

The Division launches on March 8 for all three platforms. A new trailer was released this week. It's been a long time coming for The Division, as the game was delayed multiple times before ultimately landing at its new March 2016 date.

Three days of beta? So, it's just a stress test... Not really a closed beta. K.

Eager for this game, but I can't really trust Ubisoft with betas anymore. Though I loved Siege, the betas for that were a nightmare.

Beta way too short I think. Seems more like a small something to get a bit of hyped instead of a true beta to find and erase bug. Hope they thought about preload of the beta.

@Rush-Lionheart: Not about bugs. They will patch those as they go. The beta is a stress test

I don't understand these 3 day beta tests. Why not make it a whole week to really be able to test everything out?

@Sith_Man_2005: They have tested everything out internally and with the alpha testing. The closed beta is for stress testing.

@MrFreehuggs: To each their own. Frankly, I can say the same for Uncharted 4 and Quantum Break. There's nothing new in these games. I'm all for formulas and mechanics that work (don't fix what's not broken), but recently these AAA games are becoming bland and uninspired.

Or it's just my fatigue creeping in...

I know this is only a closed beta, but for it to only run for 3 days...you're not going to stress test the servers at all.

@lnception: Based on the performance of the Alpha, stress testing was not the main concern. Seemed like they were more concerned with graphical glitches and gathering data on random encounters.

@suicidesn0wman: Thats good and all, but shouldn't they be looking for that kind of data already regardless if its an alpha or beta?

My concern comes from the infamous ubisoft servers...

@lnception: I totally understand your concern. ACU servers were garbage, Crew servers were garbage. But after playing the alpha, I can say UBI has done something great here with their instancing and servers. So good, in fact, I wouldn't be surprised if they used it on GR: Wildlands. Servers were so secure, that even if you go link dead in the middle of your game, you can literally load into the game directly back into your group. Even if you get pushed back to your console's home screen... It also will load you into Dark Zones directly if your group is positioned there. The servers work remarkably well... That was one of my biggest takewaways from playing in dec. So rest assured, friend.

from wat i played at E3 & other Cons last year game felt & played better than E32014 & the alpha got me test out the dark zone even more & its a pain but damn great. so worth my purchase i just wish the games setting was Cali instead of a rundown crapfest of New York

@uta: This game is nothing like DayZ. The Division is an RPG shooter and not a survival game.

It's more like a cross between Destiny, Defiance and Borderlands with a touch of Watchdogs.

No idea where people get DayZ from. If you'd actually played DayZ you wouldn't describe The Division as being like it.

@grin89: Kind of... imagine a third person Destiny set in the very near future that actually has content (and I can say that as a regular Destiny player).

More of a role playing aspect but very much keyed into mixing in the solo/drop-in/out co-op rather than pure PvE/PvP.

@TwinStripeUK: Alpha was light in content, though early stages of the game could change by March if anything was held back.

@suicidesn0wman: If anything, I think the 'what-Destiny-really-wanted-to-be' comments are probably right on the money. Less intense and 'grindy' than the average MMO, but still more depth than a pure third-person shooter. I like the idea that you switch between PvE and PvP by entering certain areas, and once you do your options are open. Want to team up in co-op? Go ahead. Want to go rogue and kill everyone you meet? Fine, but be aware you'll get a bounty on your head. Want to team up and then stab your team in the back and grab all their loot? That's also an option..

If they get the mechanics and content right, it'll be what everyone hoped it would, but like everything multiplayer (MMO or otherwise) it'll be the community that makes or breaks it.

Actually, I think this game is gonna flop.

I can't grasp this taking to long to get tedious, something in the line of Titanfall. I'll give it a try without expecting too much.

@KoRniTo: That's what I say, keep expectations low. Thats why people got disappointed with destiny. I had no expectations, and I enjoy the game. What I will say about giving The Division a try is this much: Make sure you have at least a cool 3 hours to try it out. The game feels too weird as far as story and mechanics within the first 30min-1hr of playing... But it all sinks very nicely in after that time period. I personally enjoyed it, I hope you do too when you try it.

A two/three day beta is not something to brag about. One weekend is not a lot of time for people to explore the beta and find bugs. And being a closed beta, they won't get the numbers to properly test servers. I think they are doing this beta for the sole purpose to fulfill a pre-order promise. I want this game to be great, but I have little faith in Ubisoft and all signs point to this game being a mess when it launches.

@GLOK1132: Especially since you can't preload it, so some of that weekend is going to be spent looking at a Uplay logo.

@GLOK1132: IMO beta is to stress servers for launch more than anything else. It's a month before release, that means there are only so many bugs they can fix.

Played the alpha.
A consensus (at least on the private alpha forums) is that this is what Destiny wanted and promised to be.

As for my opinion - I went in expecting garbage. I got burned by Unity and haven't touched a Ubi game since. However, that was Ubi Montreal; this is Ubi Massive. After playing the alpha (which I got a code for via some sign up site, not through pre-ordering), my faith is restored (specifically in Massive; Montreal released R6: Siege recently and, while the gameplay's not bad at all, those matchmaking wait times are atrocious).

If the beta - and the final game - stand up to what was delivered in the alpha, not only will I buy this game, but I'll recommend it from the rooftops as well.

Go ahead.
Trash Xbox.
Trash Ubi.
Do whatever you need to do to remind the world how sads you are and grab that two seconds' worth of attention.
I'm looking forward to seeing how this damned beta holds up.
