The Dragon Quest Movie Based On Dragon Quest 5 Gets First Trailer

Dragon Quest: Your Story releases on August 2 in Japan.

The first trailer for the Dragon Quest animated movie, Your Story, has come online, providing a first look at the upcoming film that's based on Dragon Quest V. Not only that, but the movie has been confirmed for an August 2 release in Japan.

There is no word as of yet about if it'll be released in other territories. Whatever the case, the visuals in the movie look great, and fans may be happy that it's based on Dragon Quest V, which critics generally agreed told a strong, compelling story.

Takeru Sato voices the protagonist; you can see a rundown of the other cast members here on the Dragon Quest movie website.

This music never fails to make me happy. The art is a little eh in places, but overall looks promising.

DQ5 is one of my favorites, so I'm excited for this. It's kind of funny that they seem to have abandoned Toriyama's character design, though. I'm also curious how they are going to handle the "Your Story" part, because this game had you choose which girl to marry pretty early on, and then the others are left behind.

This actually looks like it has a lot of promise. Especially since Dragon Quest V has more than a few heart jerking moments. I'm honestly just glad that people are actually looking at the idea of video game movies and shows and saying "hey, maybe if we actually TRY, it could be good!"

Does anyone know how many Dragon Quest games there are? I really liked 11 and would like to play more of the series but heard tonnes of the mainline games and spin offs are only in Japanese...

@gamingdevil800: don't hold your breath for V and VI . I think, think you can find SNES cartridges now but you have to look . The Ps2 version of V you need a translator. It's number V on Ds and no choice after that. Number Vi too. It was only release in Ds here. I don't have them because I don't like handhelds. I ll be waiting forever I think. I don't think they're going to do anything. I think we need a total compilation. The one game I love the most I only played half of them . I don't have cartridges anymore and now I'd love to play again but they neglected Us

@gamingdevil800: Dragon Quest X is an MMORPG like Final Fantasy XI and XIV are. It's the only one that was not released in English at this point, all others are available in some format on some console or handheld in English officially (and fan translations exist for other formats).

As for spin-offs, the Pokemon-"inspired" ones on GBC, GBA, DS and 3DS got most of them in English. We're missing some of the later Dragon Quest Monsters games, that's all.

There's two Dynasty Warriors type spin-offs, DQ Heroes 1 and 2, on PS4 and Steam/PC. There's also the Minecraft-style DQ Builders, with 2 on the way in English soon. Builders has actual plot and quests, it's not just sandbox building.

Other than that, there's some Mystery Dungeon and Slime's Quest spin-offs, some of which are in English, none of which are JRPGs so you're not missing out on much.

@gamingdevil800: Hello, there are 11 games. From 1-3 is the Roto-Erdrick Trilogy, from 4-6 is the Zenithian Trilogy, and then it goes 7,8,9 that are for 3DS-PS2 respectively. Dragon Quest X was only released in Japan and it's an online game, so it's very difficult for people in other regions to play it.

Dragon Quest XI was released for PS4-3DS and soon for Switch. If you like to play from a chronological order, DQXI is the first one. (DQXI, DQIII, DQI,DQII)

@shadowwarrior4: So there are a lot of mainline entries called Dragon Warrior for console releases? I would rather play the PS2 etc versions over the DS/Gameboy versions.

@gamingdevil800: There are no mainline DQ/DW games exclusive to handheld except DQ9, which is exclusive to DS, and is oddly one of the only ones without a remake.

All older and newer DQ/DW games are available on some console. DQ9 is exclusive to DS, and DQ10 is a Japan-only MMORPG (that is available on like 5 systems).

Like Final Fantasy, their plots do not really matter to each other. There's world-lore, with DQ11 (yes, the newest one) being the series main prequel. Before that, DQ3 (originally on the NES) is the series main prequel.

@gamingdevil800:I think there are only 11 in the main series. I've only played the first one (Dragon Warrior in NA) when I was a kid, some of VIII when it was on PS2 and IX on the DS. I would recommend all three, I enjoyed them. I know a few of the spinoffs were released in NA. I wanna say the early Dragon Quest Monsters games were on one of the Game Boys and the Joker games came out on DS.

@lionheartssj1: Aren't there also a few gameboy games called "Dragon Warrior Monsters" and there'r DWM I and DWM II (there's a male and female character version). I believe they are versions that sort of rip off Pokemon, but I remember them being pretty great, not sure if it's 100% related though. Unless it's also called dragon quest monsters in which sorry for re-stating what you said.
