In a tribute to the late David Bowie, Square Enix has made Omikron: The Nomad Soul free for everyone who wants to play it. Bowie played two characters and wrote music for the Quantic Dream-developed game.

Head of community Phil Elliott announced on Twitter today that Omikron is free for anybody that wants to check it out. He also mentioned that it will be free until next Friday morning, January 22, at 1 AM PST.

All you have to do is go to the Square Enix store, add it to your cart, and check out. Although Elliott says no promo code is required, that's only for the European store. North American users will have to use the code "omikron" to claim their free game.

Bowie's sole appearance in a video game came in Omikron, in which he played Boz, a revolutionary wanted by authorities. He also appears in the game as a nameless singer who performs illegal concerts in Omikron.

It was recently revealed that Harmonix almost put Bowie into the original Amplitude.

i think square would have to pay me to play this. The game looks awful even by 1999 standards.

RIP Bowie.

@adamdroid: Good choice. Now I can't find a way to close that stupid account.
[Edit, looks like I have to contact Square Enix via the customer support to close it]

I recognize this game is flawed, archaic and, in some places, borderline broken.

...Yet it's one of those games I consider ahead of its time -- whose time has yet to come. It's part open-world, part fighting, part adventure, and part first-person shooter.

I enjoyed my time with it.

@Erebus: I miss some of the genre bending we used to get in games, it mostly died out in the 2000s.

I got it now for free and it's been on my GoG wishlist for a good while, but now the Square Enix Store won't get anything else from me. If not out of lack of interesting stuff, which I can just as easily and cheaper get from Steam, then out of spite/vengeance since they (like many others unfortunately) hide the "delete account" info as well as the government hides aliens at Area 51.

The only great game David Cage ever made. If you can accept some archaic gameplay segments it's an amazing experience.

@asmoddeuss: I finished it several times and was planning to get to it again once I finish with the game I play now. Unlike many people I do like later David Cage games as well, but Omikron is certainly more accessible for most people because the game does not have any QTE and have very different gameplay.
