The HotSpot - Syndicate, Metal Gear, Ninja Gaiden - 2/22/12

Are we talking port, remake, or cover? The HotSpot tries to make sense of the game industry's latest efforts to make old new.

What's the worth of a remake? Can its value be found in a complete new interpretation of a nostalgia-drenched classic, such as Syndicate? Or what about making substantive changes to what amounts to the same game, as in Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D? And where does that ultimate of ultimates fit in? The highly complicated, don't-try-this-at-home-kids feat of porting a remake, as in Ninja Gaiden Sigma Plus? Justin Calvert, Chris Watters, Carolyn Petit, Peter Brown, and Tom Magrino discuss.

Tom, you do realize that PC games tend to run faster, and better then console game right? Installing your game onto a hard drive or a SSD will either decrease or eliminate load times and maximize textures. Installing a game is a small price us PC gamers pay so that we can have a better gaming experience. BTW ps3 games usually have installs and Xbox 360 has a install option for all of its games as well.

@Mellowcow Because the 2 biggest sellers on the 3DS, Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land aren't like anything you could find on the Wii or the DS. Also: MGS: Snake Eater 3D, Tekken 3D Prime Edition, LoZ: Ocarina of Time, Cave Story 3D, Super Street Fighter 3D Edition, Star Fox 64 3D, Monster Hunter 3G, Rayman 3D, Nintendogs + Cats, Splinter Cell 3D,... Also, what's a port by your definition compared to a multiplatform game? If you get say, BlazBlue on the 360, you don't call it a port of the PS3 version or vice versa, so why call it a port when it's on the Vita?

@Mellowcow - Not really a fair statement. The 3DS has ports too, they're just much older ports.

The Vita is defined by ports, Sony literally wants it to be a PS3 on the go. It lacks identity. The DS and the 3DS offer gaming experiences you can't get from the Wii. Don't get me wrong, I'm tempted to buy a Vita but the games I'm looking forward to are BlazBlue and Disgaea 3. :P

Well, anybody willing like Carolyn said, will again and again shell out money for the same game cleaned up. The problem really is how many times in a row? the VHS to DVD to BLURAY to Fluck HOW MANY COPIES OF HITCHED DO I NEED?! Digital for life. We drive cars only because we sacrifice certain sercrets.... like our SS number, address, eye color?....why not let me own the IP the first and last time in ANY format. The industry AND I are kind of tired of being robbed in broad in daylight. Pirates wouldn't steal treasure if it weren't soo expensive ect. It sounds big brotherish sure, but only because of bureaucratic mark ups and reformats. needs bacon

I would like to add one bit here about revamps and remakes of old classics. If you don't like these, then in addition to a boycott, I suggest that you also cut your sentiments towards the originals. Either you do that, or you are going to make yourself vulnerable to lures and traps that exploit nostalgia. As an example - and one that I believe that those of you who like playing very old games would chafe at - I would mention the release of << LINK REMOVED >>. Even before it was re-released in January 2012, I knew that CD Projekt is going to label the developer as "Bullfrog", and market them with the slogan "critically acclaimed classic", as usual. Those of you who had jumped at such a re-release had better realize to whom your money is going to. P.S. I have to concede that I didn't expect Electronic Arts to put that re-release up on GOG instead of Origins - but then, no other distributor can make more money from exploiting nostalgia than Good Old Games can.

Regarding that bit when Magrino asked why local installs tend to be needed for desktop versions of games, I would like to add that local installs are more conducive to the creation and testing of mods.

Seriously I love the show, and video was the natural evo, keep it up! Always a stellar cast, have to say more than anything I love the discussions with developers! It peers into industrial shadows that are otherwise overlooked by the common soul. Overall pretty damn awesome job! Only modification: Do Not set aside time for 10 years ago. Yea its SUPER FUN but It should be a reoccurring theme on the frontpage!! Its a great piece that could be sooo much more interactive and prominent! C'mmon don't get rich get wealthy. Hotspot OUT

Does Magrino even play games? That is, play them outside the office..?...tMcG opinions tend to be a jumble of memories/numbers that never actually offers any compelling argument or warm spot except for devil's advocate's sake. Considering this is the HAWTSPOT thats just up straight LAME ..... The other McTSheabutter is clearly the only choice for host. Sry TomMcG, you just were a young G being too GG about passion.

Since the south american gaming market, and the Brazilian in particular, is growing more and more, don't you guys consider creating a gamespot website on these shores? Like you have in Uk and Australia? As these markets are starting to creat strong roots and in clear expansion, it is the perfect time to do so.

Hd remakes are such a ripoff joke :/ they can be a good thing just because you get to play an older game again or for the first time but the way they are done is just obviously a money hungry sap hook.... I would get them if they were released at a good price instead of a max price tag

My TV can do Netflix and specialty channels like mlb and amazon video, maybe huluplus and half a dozen other video services including the Sony video on demand service that PS3 has. Oh, and a web browser as well. Not a roku box or console, my TV has that built in. Consoles are becoming useful for other media purposes than gaming for the time being, but TVs will continue to have the advantage in the future.

I'm surprised that Grand Theft Auto and Fallout were not mentioned in this discussion or "rebirthing" games.....those were Series that were vastly changed from the original IPs (even though I guess because they have numbers on the end because they fall under the area of sequels.)

We are used to GS' old scoring where y'all only used the 7-10 scale for the most part. A 6 or below was a horrible game since 1999 when I started coming here. Why doesn't the HD link work anymore? What's the point of it being there if y'all aren't going to have it work?

Tom has a point with the Steam integration for games. Seriously. I just wanted to play Skyrim. Thats it. You have to wait for the download and you CANNOT run the game without an internet connection. I hate that.

the world itself is just a copy of every other planet (liquid core planet if u want to be really specific lol). To be fair though Earth is the only known planet to have life but, who's to say it was the first planet to have it? Don't worry too much about who made it first and just enjoy the world as it is =)

@ LoG-Sacrament: For centuries, painters had few themes to paint about, for various reason: religion, myths, royalties. If you look at the Venus by Waterhouse or Klimt, it is the same theme but the reinterpretation is completely different. The composition is reinvented to anew. Time changed and different perspective was brought about. In case of video games, we tend to see a market. We make a cover slash remake slash port, we want to shake nostalgia (at some point) and pick the interest of a new crowd. We don't want to show god(s) we understand and love all of his(their) creation. In the video game industry, there is a lot of freedom and a lot of pressure. You need to create something new and not failling at it to continue to work. The interest is bound to the fact there is a market for it. Publishers want to please their shareholders. Wait...What? Was it not the same with all these painters? I think if someone re-thought (and most probably have already) the concept of the Venus tranposed to a video games medium it would have: 1) A totally different impact 2) A lot of misinterpretations 3) A lot of misunderstaning To mix the two medium was not the point of it all, was it? Anyway, these are two passions I want to have in my life and both shares their specific ''that is totally genius''. On another note, when they talked about Metal Gear Solid, I thought about the Twin Snakes remake by Sillicon Knight on Game Cube. Anyway, port slash upgrade game I am waiting on the Vita is Shin Megami Tensei Persona 4! This was by far the most exciting JRPG I've ever played. The 3rd FES was good but it has too much game phisics constrains. On the same line, great job for P3P on PSP . Atlus, I bow to your refreshness and your greatness. Cheers!

painters go back to older compositions. compare titian's venus to giorgione's venus to goya's maja desnuda to manet's olympia. remakes and reinterpretations are common in pretty much any medium.

all this talk of remakes and nobody mentions the new Jagged Alliance? BLASPHEMY! I like remakes. As long as it's done well. I remember when Harvest Moon Back to Nature was remade for the Gameboy Advance into Harvest Moon Friends of Mineral Town. The graphics in the original was in isometric 3D, the Gameboy remake was in overhead 2D. It was a bit of a downgrade for graphics but it was the same with new content added. I love still replaying that game. If the Gameboy one wasn't made, I would probably just go back to the Playstation one. I am very glad they did remake it.

I don't like seeing Syndicate FPS-ized. Mostly because I'm pretty FPSed out anymore. I remember playing the Sega Genesis version of Syndicate, back in 1996, and liking it quite a bit. I recently wishlisted the PC version on GOG. I fondly remember the old 8bit NES version of Ninja Gaiden 1-3. Ninja Gaiden 2 was the best of the NES series. MGS? Maybe it's a game that this generation of gamers (14-20 years old) should experience. I loved the PS1 version.
