The Last Of Us 2 Delayed, No New Release Date Set

The Last of Us 2's release date has been pushed back indefinitely, with Sony saying the global pandemic crisis is preventing "the launch experience players deserve."

Sony announced last week that it is delaying the launch of The Last of Us 2 indefinitely, saying in a tweet that the global crisis caused by the coronavirus is "preventing us from providing the launch experience our players deserve."

Developer Naughty Dog issued its own statement on Twitter as well. In it, the studio said that while it's in the final stretches of development, there are logistical issues that will prevent it from ensuring the best experience, including a simultaneous global launch.

Now Playing: The Last Of Us Part 2 - What We Thought Of The Demo

"We were bummed about this decision but ultimately understood it's what's best and fair to all of our players," the statement reads. "We're hoping that this won't be a long delay and we'll update you as soon as we have new information to share."

This follows another release date delay that had pushed the game's release until May 2020, not long after it had been announced for February. (Prior to that, it was due out last year.) This latest delay has no release date attached, but unlike others, it's not due to extra development time. Sony has previously said that the coronavirus pandemic shouldn't impact the release of the PlayStation 5, which is also due this year. Presently, The Last of Us 2 is only slated for release on PS4.

Despite the delay, Naughty Dog dropped a bunch of new The Last Of Us 2 screenshots, captured on a PS4 Pro.

Today's announcement from Sony also noted that Marvel's Iron Man VR is similarly delayed until further notice.

Something messed up when a Hit GameOfTheYear type of game that is guaranteed to have a sequel

and it takes 8 years!

~Same with Borderlands 3 <And even then it was rushed and this is why B3 will have minimum to no legacy. ESP compaire to Borderlands2...

*We/they shoulda made TLOU2 5 years ago..

They spent almost no time on DLC because most assumed it was because they we're working on the sequel...

An indefinitely delayed exclusive for the PS5 is still better than the promise of ZERO exclusives coming to the XboxSeX.

Wow, that's so dumb. Every company normally is trying to push their products out as quickly as possible, usually with lots of negative effects from that. And here is Sony doing the opposite? Because not releasing a finished and polished game is better than doing a less than perfect launch?

But what exactly is the issue anyway? Isn't a majority of game sales nowadays coming from digital platforms like Sony's stores? How would "logistics" affect those? My first thought when reading the headline of this article was that Sony delayed it because there's a virus or parasite or something like that which wiped out most people in the game. Since that would be "inappropriate" in our current situation. And looking at their explanations that does seem like the most likely reason for the delay. Since so far it seems that the gaming industry has only benefitted from people being couped up at home for weeks.

@Atzenkiller: Sony reported in July last year that 53 percent of games sold during the April-June 2019 quarter were digital. So, yes, at least during that quarter a majority of sales were digital, not physical.

However, look at that 53 perent. That means that physical still made up 47 percent of sales. Even if the continued erosion of physical sales pushed that down now to just 40 percent, that's still 40 percent. Those 3 million in sales you were counting on for the opening week or month? That's just 1.8M if you skip physical. Sure, some of those people would switch and buy it digitally. However, that's why physical sales are so important: it's also marketing the game at Walmart, or Target, or Best Buy, or GameStop, with standees and posters and other POS displays to remind potential customers that it exists.

@zmanbarzel: You forgot to mention where those sales came from. I remember hearing some time ago that the percentage of digital sales is much higher than that now, at least here in Europe where people have proper internet connections. And aren't used to buying their games in rip off stores like Gamestop as Americans still do for whatever reason.

I also haven't bought a game in a store for probably more than a decade now. And I imagine it's similar for many if not most people here in Germany. Like I said, the US seems different in that regard, which is the only reason why Gamestop with its anti consumer policies is still alive. But over here people are ordering anything online nowadays. Amazon has literally everything on sale and I don't see why you wouldn't be able to buy anything you want from Amazon, like this game. There've been no delays and no delivery issues so far from what I've seen. Amazon is working as it always does. So even if someone wanted to get a physical copy for some reason they should still be able to do so without problems. I don't see what problems exactly Sony is referring to aside from those affecting physical stores.

So who would the current situation really affect? The random casual buyers who go to a store and pick up a popular game, having no clue what it is, "but the cover image looks cool and it seems to be popular". How signficant those people are for the gaming industry I don't know. But it's hardly reason enough for me to just delay the launch of an already finished game indefinitely. So the similarities between the game and the current "crisis", if you can even call it that, seem like the thing that's affected Sony's decision the most.

And really what difference would it make sales wise if they released the game now or whenever it was supposed to get released, and a week or two later all this quarantine bullshit gets lifted? Of course chances are good that it'll keep going for who knows how much longer as the governments are trying everything they can to prolong it. As if they were trying to give the virus enough time to mutate into something actually dangerous. Instead of just having everyone get infected and become immune to it and having the virus die out naturally that way. But nah, let's lock everyone away, even if there's zero threat for 99% of the population that are still at decent health.

Good. They can use the delay to put multiplayer in. The multiplayer of the first game was stellar and was the only thing that saved me from burning out on the single player. I then almost exclusively played Last of Us multi for MONTHS after beating the single player.

Without it, I'm only interested in 2 for $20 or less. Not paying $60 for single player game with zero replayability.

This sad news is completely understandable. With what’s going on in the world right now, this is the first of many delays in the entertainment industry. Games, movies, tv shows, you name it...they’re all about to get delayed. Its to bad, this was my game of the year....oh well, what’s a few more months? Lol

Anyway, stay safe and happy isolation ;-)

@norcodaev: And why it is understandable? They just go for a simultaneous worldwide release for max profit. I think ND and sony are doing one mistake after the other. Let them work remotely (I am also doing that) a FINALLY release the F*CKING game for us to play it now that are in our houses.

@hannibalmath: I don't know that this delay is because Naughty Dog needs more time to make the game. If they were on track to launch next month, I'd imagine the shipping game is done. If disks weren't already being pressed, maybe they can put some more polish on it, but this really does sound like a logistical problem thanks to the pandemic, not something developers can fix by working at home (which I'd imagine they're probably doing already anyway; ND is in Santa Monica).

For the morons out here in comment section, the pandemic has claimed more than 50k lives in a short span of 3 months. Entire world is in lockdown. Olympics and major sporting events got cancelled or postponed dur to the pandemic. For Sony, physical makes up 47% of the total sales of exclusives. So surely they dont want to release the game digital only and miss out on bumper sales considering it is one of the biggest game of entire ps4 generation. You will see majority of games pushed back in a few weeks. So dont be stupid and stop whining and putting your own shitty spin on it.

@hrv_25: Have you checked Steam stats lately. Due to almost everyone in the world ending up in quarantine, people play more video games than ever. Pandemic up or down, less people wont die, because a video game isn't or is released, in fact a highly anticipated game like that would keep more people sticking to the quarantine and stay at home playing it.

From a financial stand point, I would also wager that new games released at these times and games in general, sell a lot more than at any normal time, because people are bored. I'm stuck at home for the past two weeks pushing on three, I already bought 5 games twice (me and my partner) I wouldn't otherwise buy due to time constraints or lack of super enthusiasm for the said game, just so we can pass some time. So in my opinion Sony would get a ton more digital sales in these times to offset the physical sales easily. That said, I'm not to bothered about the delay, there's plenty of other games out and coming out in the next few weeks or months, however long this might take.

@F-Minus: PC gaming was already almost digitized with a handful of games coming out in physical media. Same cannot be said for ps and xbox games. There are a majority of people who are unable to download a 100 GB game quickly. From the company standpoint, they were also unable to promote the game physically that requires promotional pieces in shows, sporting events, banners in outlets etc. I havent witnessed a single exclusive from Sony that was released digital only and why it should be obvious.

@hrv_25: That's true, however I'm sure Xbox and Playstation online statistics are looking pretty similar to Steams now with the world on lock down. The state of console networks is a shame for 2020, as for people not being able to download things because issues on their side, well, it's an understandable issue for them, but there is far more people who can and we have statistics and data to prove that.

@F-Minus: of course it will look like steam due to lockdown because people are ordered to not go out and retail stores to be shut for the time being. But if you look at the data of digital vs physical sales in the previous years you will see that digital isn't eating physical sales rather growing side by side. TLOU was a ps exclusive and still managed to break into top 50 selling games of all time where multiplats and Wii titles hold more than 45 spots. Sure digital would sell considering the hype and success of the first game but will it surpass 20 million copies of TOLU, surely not. TOLU 2 is one of their "bread winners" so it's pretty understandable why Sony doesnt want a half assed release instead of a proper one.

@Guy_Brohski: RE3 had a release date on 3rd April so physical copies and promotional materials were already on their way to retailers in March. With the lockdown, Sony was unable to do so this month. Production units, retailers and logistics all are closed so tell me with your -100 IQ how were Sony supposed to release the game? If you gonna put "digital only" then NO it wouldn't have sold even as much as 1st installment and as a company they are oviously looking forward to sell more than 20 million sales figure that TLOU 1 achieved.

@Guy_Brohski: @F-Minus: The point is that people aren't working and, most likely, the people involved with the manufacture of physical video games, that is to say the pressing of the actual disc and not the creative process, has ceased.

@kingfish1984: "Indefinitely," the adverb form of "indefinite," which means, according to Merriam-Webster:

a. not precise : VAGUE

b: having no exact limits

Seems like this is the correct word to be used in this case.

So, Sony is delaying the game because the current situation is affecting physical sales. Had they released the game digitally, with Sony slowing down the PSN speed right now there would've been a massive overload. So I guess they dodged the bullet there.
